Chap. One
I've always had something strange for fighting. I grew up in a family of brothers, so it was extremely exciting for my mother that she was going to have a daughter she could take out on spa nights and chat about her crushes. She thought we would have a perfect mother-daughter relationship.
She was wrong.
I was more of a brother's-girl. They accepted me as one of their own and I guess I was alright with being a boy. Once, they tried to cut my hair to match their's. My mother let me grow it out, but she never braided it or styled it. She was scared I'd whip my hair back at her and scowl.
It was my brothers who convinced me video games were better than magazines, Doritos were better than salads, Ginger Ale was better than classy wine, and fighting was better than gossiping.
So they got me obsessed with junk food and Call of Duty, and they taught me ridiculously about flirting. Although I remember almost nothing from my childhood.
Oh, and they trained me to be a fighter, like their personal mini bodyguard. It was adorable. My mother and father didn't think so.
So basically, I grew up a bitch. Thanks guys.
I have 5 brothers. Alex, Jason, Kyle, Chase, Percy, and then me. Shae. They wanted to change my name to Carl or something.. illegally. They're hilarious.
They came with me to England, when we moved. I fucking swear, they love me. A lot. I once introduced them to a friend from the park and Percy knocked him out cold. And Percy wouldn't hurt a kitten.
My life has always been a repetitive pattern. Kick someone's ass, flirt with someone, battle my brothers, blah-blah. But.. but. Sometimes something interesting might happen. Maybe there's a fire or something, and someone - coughcoughKYLEcoughcough - might have accidentally done it. Yeah. Convincing.
So that's me.
"Hey. Shae. You're a girl. Do you know how to.. um.. cook?" Jason asks.
I get up from my place in front of the computer.
"No. We have a microwave."
"Only Percy knows how to use it. He's out shopping," He replies pointedly. I roll my eyes, stretching and punching him in the stomach.
"Ow. You punch hard now."
"Thanks. I learned from the best."
He gives me a toothy grin and I start for the kitchen.
"Oh. You got this handled, Chase?" I ask my brother as he grabs a plate. He shoots me a look as I start for the living room. "Get back in the kitchen!" He calls.
"That's why you're single." I wink as I grab some microwavable popcorn and punch some buttons, throwing in the pack.
We, meaning my brothers and I, rented a flat in downtown England. They don't know how to do anything. Oh, and neither do I. I have never touched a frying pan in my life. I can't cook or clean.
And guess what? We have a microwave. Microwaves were a gift from the Gods. I mean.. I love them more than my siblings. And they're my only family in England right now.
"Shae? Remember when you were 5?! And.. ahahahahha! Haaaaahaa!" Alex giggles like a kindergartener. I peek over his shoulder, at his computer. I see a picture of a little girl with a huge helmet perched on her brown hair. She has the same face as me. Do I have a little sister I don't know about?
"That's you. Wearing Tony, the guy from the vacation we went to, his helmet!" Alex points at his screen. I blink at the girl. "I don't remember." I finish, looking up.
"Of course you don't," Percy says crossly and looks at Alex who gives a loud whoops.
"What? When did you get here, Percy?"
"Just now," He replies as he smooths back his hair and doesn't answer my first question - what.
"We're having popcorn for dinner."
"Yeah. It's my favorite," Kyle adds.
