Almost Lover *On Hold*
Chapter 1
I sat my coffee on the wood post of the beginning of the dock. Like usual, I was the last to wake up and everyone else was already in there bathing suit but I haven’t even changed out of my pajamas yet. “Who’s jumping in first?” Aria asked.
Everyone kind of just looked at each other waiting for someone to volunteer. “I would but I’m not in a bathing suit, sorry,” I smiled.
Walking to the end of the dock with everyone I sat down testing the water with my feet. It was colder than I accepted it to be but not freezing cold.
A rough push on my shoulder and before I could even figure out what was going on the cold water engulfed me. I felt it getting colder the deeper I got, quickly I pushed my way to the top letting in a big breath of air. “Fuck you,” I said the all of them not sure which of the laughing girls did it.
I pulled myself up onto the dock, “Sorry, beebs,” Megan grinned.
“I hate you,” I rolled my eyes but couldn’t help a giggle.
“Love you too,” She laughed back.
My eyes wondered off of her landing on our neighbors, a group of boys, walking down their yard. “Great, now guys are going to see me like this,” I huffed.
“Shit, they’re actually really hot,” Megan squeaked, grabbing my wrist.
“Fuck,” I mumbled.
“Let’s go talk to them,” Gabi urged.
“You guys can, but I look like a mess and my t-shirt is half see through so I’m going in,” I quickly said before grabbing my coffee and hurrying up the path to the house.
Plopping down on the couch next to Aria, I pulled my freshly curled hair over my shoulders, “How was talking to the neighbors?”
“Good,” Megan smiled, “tonight were going to have a bonfire down by the lake together.”
“One of them asked about you,” Aria added grinning.
“Oh gosh, what did you say?” I huffed.
“Nothing, nothing, but don’t worry, I didn’t forget to mention that your single,” She said with a giggled.
“You’re joking.”
“I was casual about it, don’t freak out. Trust me though I was doing you a favor. That boy was sexy as fuck and now he knows he can make a move on you,” Aria explained rising her eyebrows up and down.
I just rolled my eyes in response.
“C’mon Aria, you know Emily isn’t like that,” Gabi piped in, “and she has Jai anyways.”
“Please you didn’t know Em a couple years ago,” Megan grinned, “she used to have so many guys wrapped around her finger.”
“I flirted a lot. I never actually did anything,” I defended myself, holding in a laugh.
“We both know you were a heart breaker,” Megan laughed.
It’s true I guess. In ninth grade I did play with a lot of guys feeling. I’m not proud of it. The only reason I was like that was because Ben, the guy I dated all through seventh and eighth grade dumped in at the start of ninth for shit I don’t even want to think about. But anywyas, I wanted to make him jealous and- I don’t even know. It was my first time being single in a long time.
I’m not like that anymore though. I have a thing with Jai and both of us know exactly where we stand. If one of us finds someone we actually want to date, everything is off and if we want to flirt with other people its fine. I just choose to not do that. Well not on purpose anyways; Aria thinks I’m still a flirt. That’s really only when I drinking though.
“Whatever,” I finally responded.
A moment passed before the door bell rang with a long buzz. “What the fuck kind of ring is that?!” Aria said.
Gabi laughed before she opened the door for Brandon and Jai. “The party is here,” Brandon shouted as he walked in with big brown box dropping it lightly onto the counter.
“Damn, guys,” Megan said looking into it.
“What it has to last us all week. I can’t go all the way home to get my brother to buy us more,” Brandon explained. Alcohol is obviously what’s in it.
“Hey, babe,” Jai said slinging him arm around me as he sat down.
“Hey, bitch,” I smiled and he rolled his eyes before kissing me.
I made my way down the path to the fire. Everyone else came out maybe ten minutes ago, while I was at the store with Jai and Brandon. They’re still putting stuff away so I decided to come down by myself.
I stood at the end of one of the blankets. No one brought outside chair so that’s what everyone is sitting on.
“You must be Emily,” One of the boys said jumping up; bring his hand through his blonde hair. “I’m Niall. That’s Zayn, Louis, Liam, and Harry,” He said pointing to each boy.
I have to admit they are all very attractive. “Hey,” I said kind of shyly.
The one with curly hair, Harry I think stood up and stepped toward me as Niall went back to his seat. “Hello, love,” He smirked, his voice deep and raspy.
My stomach stirred. Answer him! I yelled at myself. “Don’t call me that,” I finally pushed out a usually hard to get response.
He seemed humored by my response. “What would you prefer me to call you?” He pulled his bottom lip in between his teeth.
“Emily, that’s it,” I snapped.
“Well, Emily,” He said leaning in closer to me until I felt him mouth graze my ear, “it’s hot when girls play hard to get.”
Shivers crept down my back. “It’s not playing hard to get if I don’t want you,” I rolled my eyes keeping up my tough act, surprising myself by the fact I could even respond with how much intimidated I felt by him and how shy I usually am around new people.
“Of course you are, but you didn’t even let me explain why,” He said looking right into my eyes, “it’s hot because you can see how much they want you but force themselves to play hard to get. They think they’re in control but really it’s so easy to make them drop the act.” He tilted his head slightly, “Now let’s see when you’ll drop the act, Emily.”
I stood there speechless, frozen under his gazed. He smirked before sitting back down in his seat.
Almost on cue Jai and Brandon joined us. I don’t know why, but I felt the need to prove to Harry he’s wrong, that I am in control and I see my chance. Jai has been drinking so I know he’ll be in a very flirt mood anyway. I ran over to him jumping up, rapping my legs around his waist and kissing him.
I felt the need to look over my shoulder and see Harry’s expression, but then he would know that’s why I did it.
“Someone missed me,” He grinned his words slightly slurred bringing his hand down and grabbing my bum. Usually I would feel uncomfortable about that especially cause there are so many people around but I have to prove this point.
“Just a little,” I kissed him again, longer this time before placing my feet back on the ground.
Megan grabbed my wrist getting my attention. “What?” I questioned kneeling down by her.
“What was all that?” she asked and I couldn’t tell if she was talking about me and Harry or me and Jai.
“I’ll explain later,” I answered quickly.
Jai had sat down on one of the blankets so I made my way over and sat down in the gap between his legs. For a second I made eye contact with Harry who was sitting on the other side of the fire. I couldn’t read the expression on his face. He only kept his eyes on mine for long enough for me to know he noticed the he turn to Louis laughing at one of his jokes that I wasn’t paying attention enough to hear.
