In a Heartbeat
Slutty Hot Chocolate
"How early does Katrina wake up?" Harry asked, looking through the window.
"Usually about the same time Ella does, which is about 7:30," I answered, staring straight ahead at the sunrise.
"Well, it's about 7:15 now, so..."
"They just go downstairs and watch Disney Channel until the cows come home. Or someone takes the remote away. Which usually isn't until noon, because we have nothing better to do anyway," I said, finally looking at him. My gaze drifted away and I found myself staring at the balcony behind him.
Will's balcony.
I got up and set down my now empty mug.
Then I did something stupid.
I jumped.
Harry's POV
I watched silently as she set down her mug and stood up. I didn't know what she was doing, and I didn't ask. I probably should have, but I didn't. And then next thing I know, she's jumped off the railing and onto the bacony behind me. She slipped when she landed and fell on her back.
"Mel!" I shouted, dropping my mug. I ran over to the railing and argued with myself about whether to jump over there or stay where I was and hope she was okay.
"I'm fine!" she laughed, rolling onto her stomach and watching me through the guard rails. "I always fall when I make that jump."
"Well, don't do that again," was all I could say.
"I have to. This window's locked. I don't have another choice," she said, standing up. "Ouch. That felt amazing," she said sarcastically, rubbing the back of her head. "So are you coming or not?"
"Me?" I asked, looking around to see if she was talking to someone else.
"No," she answered sarcastically. "I'm asking that tree. Duh, I'm asking you!"
"Um... no?"
"Well, why not?" she asked, putting her hands on her hips.
"Because I'd rather not die today," I answered. "Thousands of fans around the world would probably track you down and kill you for that."
"It always goes back to your fans, doesn't it?" she shouted, throwing her hands up in the air. "Live a little! Do what you want, not what they want you to do! 'Oh, well, my fans wouldn't want me to do this, so I'm not going to' and 'My fans would be mad if I did this, so...'," she mocked. "Get a life, Harry!"
"Fine!" I shouted in frustration. I jumped the three foot distance between balconies and slipped as she had.
"It does work!" she shouted triumphantly, punching the air.
"What works?" I asked, fuming.
"Reverse psychology," she said, grinning at me. "I think that's what it is at least.... Anyway, be ready to catch me if I fall."
"Wha-?" I trailed off, watching her climb onto the railing that faced the sunrise and spread her arms out wide, standing up.
I took a step forward and looked up at her face. She was smiling slightly, and her eyes were closed. The sun practically reflected off her pale skin and blond hair, creating a halo around her face.
"I found him!" a British voice shouted from below. Melody stepped off the railing and peered over the edge. It was Liam.
"Harry! Ella's watching Disney Junior! Come on! Mickey Mouse is on!" Louis shouted up at me.
"Big whoop. I watch better shows than that!" Melody shouted.
"What's better than Mickey Mouse?!" Louis challenged.
"The microwave!" she laughed. Louis looked confused. "Come on," she said, turning to me. Katrina can't wake up and come look out the window to see you guys. That would ruin it. Jump over to Ella's balcony. Her window is always unlocked and it almost never freezes, so go in through that window while I make sure Katrina's still asleep. Meet me in the kitchen."
With that, she hopped up on the railing and jumped to her balcony, disappearing through the window. I did the same, except in the opposite direction. I pulled open Ella's window and climbed through, shutting it behind me. I sprinted down the stairs and out the kitchen sliding door.
"Guys! You have to come in the kitchen. Mel makes the best hot cocoa ever!" I shouted.
"Ooh! Chocolate!" Louis shouted, faliling his arms in the air and running past me into the kitchen, where he instantly plopped down on a chair.
"I wouldn't say the best, but it's pretty close. Will made better hot chocolate," Melody said, leaning against the sliding door. "By the way, Katrina's getting ready for the day, so let's act like we're all in our own homes and be doing something in the kitchen, like making waffles or eating an apple. Act natural."
"Okay," Liam said, walking past Melody and into the kitchen. I followed him and got out some of the stuff I saw Meldoy take out when she made hot chocolate.
"Mel?" I asked. "Hot cocoa?"
"If I must," she said overdramatically. "Just let me wake up Niall and Zayn first, okay? Neither of them sleep naked, do they?"
"Not when they're guests," Liam answered from behind a bowl of cereal.
"Good. I'll be back momentarily," she said, and set off toward the stairs. A few minutes later, Zayn came stumbling into the kitchen, and I could hear Melody screaming "bacon" at Niall. He came running into the kitchen at full speed and skidded to a stop right before he hit the island.
"Bacon?" he asked.
"Don't have any. But we can make pancakes," Melody giggled. She made eight hot chocolates and set them on the table, then made a pot of coffee and added some to two of them and set them aside.
"What's the coffee for?" Liam asked.
"Katrina likes coffee, so I made her my infamous slutty hot chocolate," she answered as if this were the most natural thing in the world.
"Slutty hot chocolate?" Louis repeated, confused.
"Yeah, you know, like, hot chocolate that had sex with coffee," she said, walking to the ascending stairs. "Kat! Get yo' redheaded ass down here!"
"I'm coming, I'm coming!" she shouted, slowly descending the stairs. Liam flipped the pancakes, Louis poured some coffee into his hot chocolate, Niall was eating a huge stack of chocolate chip and blueberry pancakes with strawberry and maple syrup, Zayn was looking in the fridge, and I was just kinda standing there, sipping hot chocolate.
Then I had an idea.
I walked out to the living room and sat down next to Ella, who kinda scooted away from me.
"So, Katrina," Melody said. I could hear two pairs of footsteps walking to the living room. "Ready for your big surprise?"
"I don't like surpises, Mel. You know that!"
"But you're going to love this one. Trust me."
Melody walked into the living room, holding her hand over Katrina's eyes.
Get the boys she mouthed to me. I nodded, then rounded up the rest of the band and stood in a line.
"One... two..." Melody started.
"Three!" we shouted in unison.
