The Letter
The mail lady, every year, same day, same minute the letter came. Muttering a thanks she handed me the letter and left, turning it around in my hands I saw again no return address, only the red writing of urgent, my name and address. Slowly walking to my room I placed it on the dresser waiting to open it later. Returning back downstairs I waved people good bye as they left. Pressing a kiss to Sofia's lips she walked out to her car blowing me a final kiss before driving off.
Marching up the stairs I retrieved the letter and returned to the living room where my family was waiting. Taking a seat I opened the sealed white envelope. Slowly taking the folder papers out I unfolded them and placed the envelope to the side. Taking a deep breath I started reading her letter,
Dear family,
Its been 9 years since I left, and finally I have found the courage to tell you why. I was going through a box of things in the basement, looking for a stuffed animal I couldn't find since we had moved. While rummaging through the boxes a window opened and a letter dropped in, being a curious 10 year old I read it. It told me to leave the city or I was going to be killed. I had a week to leave and could not tell anyone. Stapled to the letter was a thousand dollars and instructions to take the train as far away as I could. So here I am. Writing this letter. Getting ready to change my life forever.
Love,
Elizabeth Payne
