Untouchable
Chapter 1
I walked into the school hallways with confidence. It was my junior year, finally an upperclassman. I had changed so much over the summer, I had a new group of friends, and I was ready to take on this school year. I was your average girl. Cheerleader, ‘popular’ girl, oh so cliché. My old friends hated me now, but who needs them? This school is yours, now, Mal.
“Malory!” my best friend Claire screamed across the hallway.
We greeted each other with a big hug, exchanging schedules.
“We have English, lunch, Spanish, and PE together!” She squealed.
“Thank god.” I laughed.
“I have to go to chemistry.” She stuck her tongue out. “Great way to start the day, right? What’s your first hour?” She snatched my schedule again. “Drama?” Her nose scrunched up and she gave me a disapproving look.
I shrugged. “Easy A.”
She handed me my schedule and ran off.
Drama was way more than an easy A to me, it was my passion. But I’d never admit that to Claire, she’d die from laughing at how lame I was.
“Hey Malory.” My ex-best friend, Vanessa said. “I’m really sorry about your parents. I tried calling you… all summer. But I guess you were busy.” She said, glancing at Claire.
I shrugged at her. “Sorry, I guess I was.”
Vanessa was one of those girls who seemed like they didn’t belong in high school. She dressed like a 12 year old, she wore no makeup, and she was shy and timid. I guess I shouldn’t be judging her, though, I mean, that’s how I was only a few months ago. When my parents told me that they were getting a divorce, I went on a rebellious streak. That’s how I met Claire. We bonded over a cigarette she found on the ground at some party. It’s pretty ridiculous, actually, but we were both having a rough night and needed someone to talk to. Eventually I was ‘approved’ of by her crowd, the most popular kids in school. I know popularity doesn’t matter, but I’ve always wondered what it felt like to be that girl that everybody looked at in the hallways, that girl that everyone wanted to be.
And that’s who I was now, and I knew this would be the best year I’ve ever had, no matter how messed up it was at home.
“Do you have drama first period, too?” Vanessa asked. We had both been taking acting classes together since we were 10. That’s how we became friends.
“Yeah.” I muttered, not looking her in the eye, walking towards the auditorium.
I hadn’t missed these hallways one bit, but they weren’t the hallways where I got made fun of, or just pushed around in anymore. They were the hallways where everybody was looking at me. It felt good to be the center of attention for once.
“I hear we have a student teacher.” Vanessa stated quietly, snapping me out of my haze once again.
“Cool.” I snapped, and she remained silent after that. Did Vanessa not realize that I wasn’t friends with her anymore? She was nice and all, but I moved on. I wasn’t like her anymore.
We stepped in the auditorium, and I realized who I was dealing with. My drama geeks, all of my ex-best friends. Was the drama class really worth it? As shallow as it sounded, all they would do is bring my popularity down, just as I was getting up there. Maybe I should get a new schedule..
“Malory!” My teacher yelled, walking up to me.
“Mr. Andrews!” I smiled politely.
“Great to see you back, I heard you weren’t taking drama and I was appalled! Thank goodness you changed your mind, I couldn’t lose one of my best students.” He winked and nudged me with his elbow.
“Couldn’t live without it, I guess.” I smiled. Mr. Andrews was the best, one of the reasons why I continued to take the class.
“Take a seat, dear, we’ll be out in a minute!” He smiled, hopping on the stage and walking behind the curtains.
I walked up a few aisles and took a seat next to Vanessa, whipping out my phone.
Kill me. I typed to Claire, who responded instantly.
I told you not to take the class! You insisted, loser!
I typed quickly. I didn’t know I’d be surrounded by dorks.. :P
“You should put your phone away.” A guy said to me. He stood in the aisle, a few feet away, smirking at me.
“Class hasn’t even started.” I rolled my eyes at him. Who was this guy? He looked older , but I didn’t think much of it. He was probably just a senior. Why was he talking to me? He was cute though, really cute. I’d have to find out his name and ask Claire about him. “And you should mind your own business.”
“Hello, class!” Mr. Andrews walked up on the stage. “I see lots of familiar faces. This should be a very good year! Before we get started on anything, I’d like to introduce to you all our student teacher, Mr. Tomlinson!”
The guy who had just spoken to me walked up to the stage. He got up and looked at me, and I felt my face blush a bright red.
“Hey guys! You can call me Mr. Tomlinson or Tommo, whatever you’d like.” He laughed, looking at my appalled expression. “I’m a student just like all of you guys, this should be a fun year. I can’t wait to work with all of you!”
“Malory!” my best friend Claire screamed across the hallway.
