Ordinary Girl
Arrival
She dug her nails into the armrests of her seat as dark grey clouds whipped by. She looked outside the window, biting her lip. A bird flew by, and she couldn’t help the smile. It looked so happy, so free. Similar to how she was feeling. For the first time in her life, Juliet felt free, happy almost. Since she snuck away from her adopted father and left her hometown, she could finally relax a little.
“Excuse me, miss?” a voice asked
Her mind snapped back into reality as she turned to face the stewardess. Her fiery red hair was almost as distracting as her piercing green eyes. The typical stewardess uniform was a little too low cut and hugged the girl’s curves a little too tightly.
“Sorry to disturb you, would you like any refreshments?” she smiled brightly with her pearl like teeth.
Juliet tried not to roll her eyes. “Thank you, but no thank you.” She hated girls like that, or maybe she was just bitter. Being a foster kid wasn’t easy, and Juliet didn’t have great luck. The father she ended up with was horrible to her. That’s why she snuck away from home, and that’s why she seemed cold and alienating to people.
The stewardess shrugged “Whatever,” She turned away and focused on another passenger, clearly offended.
Juliet closed her eyes to fall asleep, trying to clear her mind of all her worries. She couldn’t have any worries. Well, not now. She was on a mission, determined to escape her past, and to start over.
Her thoughts were interrupted by an announcement. “Alright, ladies and gentleman, please fasten your seatbelts and prepare for landing.” Juliet reached for her seatbelt, buckling herself in “Welcome to Los Angeles.”
The plane leaned down a bit, starting it’s descent into Los Angeles. As she looked out the window, the sun shined brightly, turning the ocean a bright blue. It was better then she could have ever imagined. The palm trees, the sandy beach and cool waters. Her heart raced as she bit her lower lip.
As the plane’s wheels finally hit the ground, she reached under the seat, grabbing her carry on. That’s the only luggage she had, since that was all she was able to sneak out of her house.
Once the airplane pulled up to the terminal, she stood, quickly rushing off the airplane. She didn’t have the patience to wait any longer. She needed to break free. After all, this was her fresh start.
She walked down the terminal, hearing the clicking of heels behind her, but she didn’t bother to look back. People stared at her as she walked into the airport. Tucking her hair behind her ear, she headed outside, stepping into the Los Angeles sun. It was hot, at least warmer than where she was used to. She took off her jacket and tied it around her waist, her pale skin glowing in the light.
As she walked towards the street, she noticed a large commotion half a block away. What could possibly be happening? After her long flight, Juliet was too shy to go over there and too tired to care. Considering she moved to try and live a normal life and stay out of the spotlight.
The cab in front of her honked, causing her to jump a little. He was a frail man, covered in facial hair. He wore a newsboy cap on top of his head and wore torn up old clothes. Juliet shivered slightly as the guy spit out the driver seat window then looked over at her “Look, toots, I don’t have all day. So do you need a ride or not?”
She took one more look towards the commotion, still not sure what was causing it before she shrugged. “Alright. Thank you.” She slipped inside the cab, shutting the door as it pulled away from the airport.
It was an awkward ride. Juliet stared silently out the window while the cab driver yelled obscenities at people on the road. Some loud rap song thundered throughout the entire car, making her eardrums sore.
The driver turned down the music and lit a cigar, inhaling and coughing before looking at her “Where are you going sweet heart?”
Digging through her backpack, she found her hotel receipt and looked for the name. “It’s. . . um . . . Starwood Hotel?” The driver just gave a simple nod in response and didn’t say another word.
Juliet stared out the window, taking in all the sights as they flashed by. A fascinating town, a little flashier than she would prefer. On the other hand, it was busy enough for her to be overlooked by most.
Her thoughts were interrupted by the cab driver honking his horn loudly. “Hey, lady. We’re here.”
Juliet faked a smile, handing the driver his change “Thanks for the ride.” She stepped out of the cab, slamming the door behind her.
She looked up at the hotel. It was a fairly tall building, surrounded by palm trees. A hotel would be a good start, help her figure out what her next step is, if there was a next step.
She stepped inside the hotel and looked around. The lobby was very sleek and elegant, not a single speck of dust anywhere. Very elegant and professional, yet friendly. The opposite of Juliet.
Juliet walked to the counter, setting her bag at her feet and ringing the silver bell against the counter. The ring echoed through the lobby. As she waited for help, she drummed her fingernails against the table.
A staff member appeared out of thin air, smiling at her softly. What was with everyone in this city smiling? The staff guy laughed “Well, hello miss! And welcome to Starwood Hotel. How can we help you today?”
Juliet rocked back on her heels, taken aback by his manners. “Um, yeah I have a reservation.” She reached into her pocket and pulled out the receipt handing it to him.
The man glanced it over before starting to type on the computer, occasionally glancing back at the receipt. After the computer beeped a few times, he smiled “Ah yes. Ms. Charlotte Kane.” Juliet nodded and he continued “It’s a pleasure to have you.” He grabbed a key from the back wall “Here’s your room key.” He handed it to her “And welcome to Los Angeles. Enjoy your stay.”
The man looked at her feet, then back up at her “Do you need help with any bags?”
Juliet raised an eyebrow and took the key. “Um, not really.” She picked up her carry on and headed into the elevator, pressing the 4 button and tapping her foot impatiently. In the elevator, some boy band song played. Big Time Rush, or Back Street Boys, or One Direction, or whatever band it was.
She rolled her eyes as the doors finally opened on the 4th floor. “Oh thank god.” She sighed in relief as she stepped onto the floor, looking for her room. It was a brown door with a golden knob.
She pushed her key through the lock, unlocking the door and stepping inside. Considering the price, it was a really nice hotel room. Fancy decorations, the bed neatly made, everything tucked in and folded to perfection. Like the hospital rooms that she knew all too well as a child.
As she shut the door behind her, she tossed her carry on the floor and collapsed onto the bed, exhausted. It was a long journey, but at least now she was free.

A few hours later, she woke up, stretching her arms. She checked the clock beside her bed, rubbing her eyes. It was 9 o’clock. The sky was completely dark. Stretching her legs, she stood up and yawned. Despite enjoying the solitude, she really needed to walk around.
Grabbing the hotel key and her phone, she stepped outside of her room, locking the door. Sure, she was barefoot, but she figured she was the only one walking around the hallway. She’d be fine.
When she approached the elevator, she recognized the guy from the counter earlier “Crap” she sighed. Not wanting to be seen, she turned around the other direction.
Unfortunately, the counter guy recognized her “Wait! Ms. Kane!” He called after her.
She picked up the pace, running faster. Her hair flowed down her back as she glided down the hall, her heart pounding in her ears. She looked back to make sure she lost him, when she crashed into something, falling to the floor, her head smashing into the wall.
She caught a glimpse of a guy walking towards her before her senses started to weaken and her vision went black.
