Like Father Like Son
Chapter 5
After the final bell, Elaine and I walked to our lockers. Jason had to leave school early to take care of some business with his dad. Elaine looked over at me as I spun my combination.
"You don't think Jason did something to Ms. Lane, do you?" she whispered as her eyes darted up and down the hallway.
I looked at her, "why would you say something like that?"
"You told me yourself that he said he hated her, and he was all smirks when they were telling us about her 'accident'!" Elaine exclaimed, "and the way he said 'fell' in class, that was some serious horror movie crap."
"Elaine.." I said.
"What?" she snapped.
"Stop watching Lifetime movies." I chuckled as I closed my locker.
"They're fabulous." She remarked as she closed her own locker, "but that's beside the point."
"There is no point." I laughed, "Jason didn't hurt Ms. Lane."
"You only say that because you like him." Elaine rolled her eyes as we began walking toward the doors.
I rolled my eyes as a faded blush crossed my cheeks, "hush up, I do not."
"Oh, please." Elaine shook her head as we made our way outside and toward the bus.
I stepped up onto the bus first, walking back to our usual seat and sitting down, then making room for Elaine. "Oh please, what?"
"I see the way you practically gawk at him when he's with us." Elaine nudged me.
"I do not! Stop saying that!" I snapped. Elaine then pressed her index finger to her lips, shushing me. I raised an eyebrow. Elaine pointed behind us, where two girls were sitting.
"Listen." she mouthed and began leaning against the back of the seat. I mocked her action.
"Did you hear about Ms. Lane?" one of the girls said.
"I did!" the other exclaimed, "she fell down her stairs?"
"Fell?" the first girl laughed, "the woman was obviously pushed."
"Why do you say that?" her friend asked. I looked over at Elaine, who was staring at me, confused and worried.
The first girl cleared her throat, "well, her house has the type of stairs where it's two flights to get down to the bottom, and she was found at the bottle of the second flight."
"So you think someone was behind her the entire time to shove her down both flights?"
"Trust me, my daddy is deputy in town, and he told me that she broke her neck, she had to be more than just pushed down a few, carpeted stairs." The first girl replied.
"That poor woman." the second girl sighed.
Elaine and I leaned up, staring at each other. Elaine's bright brown eyes grew in size as she clamped a hand to her mouth, sliding down in her seat so her back was flat on the place we sat on.
"Don't get any ideas, Elaine." I whispered-shouted at her, "that doesn't mean Jason did anything."
"Fine then." she whispered-shouted back, "let's ask him."
