Learning How to Live

'Vacation'

His cheeks must have come out of life with a shade of red on them. His lie was understandable in a way; he's a celebrity. Everyone would have died just to have a small discussion with him, especially his fans.

Which I am, but the sane one. Well no, I can't even be classified in the fans category. I only know the band members' name, some of their songs and that's about it.

"Please don't freak out, I just woke up because of jetlag and we just arrived. I really want a smooth-"

"So do I." I smiled.

‘’… You’re not… going to freak out?’’ He asked hesitantly.

‘’No.’’

‘’Uh… Well thanks. I appreciate a lot.’’

I nodded and my gaze turned to him. His lips were curled up, showing a relieved and grateful smile. It’s sure not easy to have a normal day when every young girl wants a piece of you.

‘’If I may, what is someone like you doing here without his four international bandmates, especially here?’’ I was intrigued; how come a worldwide band would come here? For vacation? Please, there is nothing to do in this town.

‘’Mates is a big word.’’ He scoffed.

‘’Aren’t you all best buddies or something?’’ My curiosity spoke by itself.

‘’Was. Management sent us here to rebuilt our ‘group spirit’, but it’s a total waste of time.’’

‘’If you keep thinking that, well yeah, it’s a lost cause, because you’d provoked it. Stay positive; I’m sure things will go back in their initiative place, but only if you believe it can.’’

‘’Maybe… I don’t know.’’ He shrugged.

I looked around one last time. The big oak was still planted in front of the lake. The first time I discovered this park, it was on summer. I climbed on it and sat on the most solid branch of the tree and waited for dawn to settle in the dark town. My father came home more than drunk, and he was bawling. I don’t know about what though. When I heard his voice making the house trembling, I just sneak out during the night and wondered in the streets. Dangerous, I know, but I couldn’t stand the yelling that night, I don’t know why either. My sleepy feet wound up here, and it became my spot since.

A small cold breeze hit delicately my face, dragging me out from my memories and throws me back into reality. I can’t wait for spring to take out my sketchbook here. In winter, it’s too raw for my hands.

Another fact in Salmon Arms: winter has no snow. And I’m good with it.

I buried my hands in my pockets and stood up.

‘’I’ll let you go back into your world. Good luck with your band.’’ I beamed and started walking away.

‘’W-wait!’’ Niall stood up too. ‘’I- Can I join you? I don’t feel like going back to the lads, and I could use some company.’’

‘’Sure.’’ I said turning my head towards him. He joined me in my walk and we exited the park.
That was odd to be with someone. I mean, I’m not one of those who love to hang out with multiple people. I’m more of a lonely girl, because I’m always thinking and examining my surrounding. I don’t really talk too, and it bothers people a lot when they try to have a proper conversation with me. My silence doesn’t bother Shellie though, my best friend since as long as I can remember.

Thinking about my only real friend brought a smile on my lips. I love her. When we met, I was leaned against the red brick wall and watched the kids playing during recess. I was questioning myself why I wasn’t joining them, why I was too shy to interact with one of them. Then, a girl approached me, her hands all dirty from mud.

‘’Do you want to play with the earthworms?’’

Since then, this girl would come to me and ask to play with her in the mud, and I always said yes. I was so amazed by her ginger hair, her big blue eyes and how quiet she could be, and as loud as she wanted.

‘’I’m Shellie, by the way.’’ She once revealed me during lunchtime.

My smiled grew bigger by those memories from elementary school. I’m lucky to know her.

I heard a small sneeze next to me and I realized Niall was with me. See what I meant when people didn’t like my company? I end up forgetting them, caught up in my own thoughts.

‘’Do you have Kleenex?’’ Niall broke the silence and brought his left hand to cover his running nose.

‘’Unfortunately, no. But if we keep walking on this street, we should see the General Store. You might found it there.’’

‘’General Store? Jesus management wasn’t kidding when they told us this town was old-fashioned.’’

I giggled at his choice of words.

‘’I’m sorry, that was mean. I just arrived here and I’m already complaining.’’

‘’Don’t be. Salmon Arm exists since a long time, so everything around here is old or broken. We have few technologies, but it’s not trendy at all.’’ I explained.

‘’So you don’t have like, a store called ‘Apple’?’’

I shook my head.

‘’Or any kind of electronic stores?’’ His eyes begged.

‘’Well, we have one, and it’s called ‘Faster Than Light Computing’. And for the records; it’s a lie.’’

His shoulder suddenly dropped and his eyes were horrified.

‘’How the hell will I be able to survive?’’

Sunday evening

‘’Mom! Get over it!’’

‘’What kind of message do you want others to receive? That you are a tramp?’’

‘’What the fuck mom!? I’ve done it because I’m no longer your little baby! I’m becoming a teenager!’’

‘’Watch your language young lady!’’

Shellie and I were in my room painting our nails. My mother had just arrived from work and discovered what my sister did to her nose: piercing. In my opinion, I think that’s cool. It makes her look tough and rebel.

‘’You should be happy instead! At least, I’m not sleeping around with total jerks like YOU did!’’
‘’Ouch, that was sharp.’’ Shellie commented.

I nodded in agreement. Soon, we heard the door of my sister’s bedroom slammed shut and the footsteps of my mom.

‘’Lyvia?’’ My mother knocked on my door before opening it.

‘’Hi Esther.’’ My best friend greeted her.

‘’Hi Shellie. Lyvia, are you going to eat dinner with us?’’

‘’Actually, Shell and I are going to eat at ‘Wicked Spoon’.’’ I replied and got up from my bed, blowing on my nails to dry them faster.

‘’Oh… Alright, have fun. Come back before an extravagant hour, honey.’’ My mom instructed me before closing the door.

I felt bad to leave her alone again for dinner, but Kacey is really in a bad mood lately, more than she used to be. And really, I don’t feel like listening to her babbling about how terrible her life is and how she hates us and how one day she’ll run away.

‘’So, before we got interrupted; you were telling me there’s a band visiting Salmon Arm?’’ Shellie resumed our talk.

‘’Yeah. Not visiting, I’m not sure. The guy told me they were staying here because of band’s issues.’’ I clarified.

‘’Do you know what’s the name of the band?’’

‘’One Direction. Here, I have a few songs from them on my mp3.’’

I walked to my desk and grabbed delicately my mp3. I unrolled the earphones and offered one to Shellie before plugging the other one in my right ear. I clicked on the file where the few singles I have of them were stocked and pressed play.

‘’Don't, try to make me stay, or ask if I’m okay. I don’t have the answer. Don’t, make me stay the night, or ask if I’m alright. I don’t have the answer.’’

‘’Heartache, doesn’t last forever. I’ll say I’m fine. Midnight, ain’t no time for laughing, when you say goodbye.’’

‘’It makes you lips, so kissable. And your kiss, unmissable. Your fingertips, so, touchable.’’
‘’And your eyes.’’

‘’Irresistible.’’

‘’That’s nice, but how many are singing?’’ Shellie asked.

‘’Five.’’

‘’And did the guy you met sung already?’’

‘’No, but he’s next.’’

‘’I’ve, try to ask myself, should I see someone else? I wished I knew the answer.’’

‘’But I know, if I go now, if I leave, then I’m on my own tonight. I’ll never know the answer.’’

‘’Midnight, doesn’t last forever. Dark turns to light. Heartache, flips my world around I’m falling down, down, down, that’s why.’’

‘’Hm, the song is good. I didn’t know you loved that kind of sound. Where have you listen to it?’’ Shellie said and removed the earphone from her ear.

‘’It’s when you let me use your laptop to put some music in my mp3. I was looking on the thing called ‘YouTube’ and I tried to remember a song I’ve heard, but I couldn’t come up with the title. I memorized one sentence of it, and it said ‘irresistible’, so I typed it.’’

‘’You’re so stupid sometimes.’’ Shellie sighed.

‘’Hey! I don’t know perfectly how that thing works alright?’’ I defended myself.

‘’Don’t be mad, Lyv. Let’s go.’’ She laughed and examined her nails to see if they were dried enough. Hers were painted in a dark blue and mines were in a dark grey. We took our coat and headed outside.

It was 8 pm. ‘Wicked Spoon’ was an old (again) restaurant were most of the teens and young adults meet up and have a good time together. Shell and I always loved this place, and we eat there quite often.

After 15 minutes of walking, we entered in the restaurant, more than happy to find a source of heat. Since we were usual customers, we directly went to our table, waiting for someone to take our orders.

‘’I am SO hungry.’’ Shellie whined.

‘’Yeah, me too.’’ I said while removing my leather jacket. I leaned on the table, resting my chin in the palm of my hand. Tonight wasn’t that crowded. ‘’Suzann shouldn’t take so much time to see us.’’ I thought.

‘’Lyv?’’

‘’Hm?’’

Shellie was looking at something behind me, or someone.

‘’Is this the five guys?’’ She asked, lifting her finger to point at what she was referring to.
