Ninety-Four
"Hello?"
The voice belonged to a young female, sounding very much like Amber. Although she didn't sound like her usual bubbly yet conniving self. She sounded groggy, upset almost.
"Amber? Is that you?"
I willed myself to stay calm, to be civil just in case something really was up.
"Oh my Gosh, yeah, hi K,"
Okay this was a little bit odd. Either she was calling for Niall which would be weird or she was calling for me and knew to call here not my home phone or mobile which would be even weirder.
"I'm outside your house, can I come in? We need to talk,"
I honestly didn't want to talk to her. I didn't feel like discussing her or have her explain why she was messing around with the guy she knew I loved. Notice the past tense as it definitely no longer applied. I despised of both of them.
"I'm not home," I replied, strategically avoiding the question.
There was a long pause and then the noise of a door opening on her end of the line. There were muffled voices. I struggled to make out even a sentence or two as I pressed the phone right up to my ear.
"No she's not home, try Niall's house. She's at his sister's Eighteenth. Although, she is meant to be coming home soon,"
Damn it! She just told Amber where I was. This was going to end badly, I could feel it. Why would she do that? I guess I hadn't told her about anything that had happened these past few months. Still, wouldn't she have noticed that I'd been avoiding Amber, not having her over?
My heartbeat quickened as I realised I hadn't been keeping track of the time. I hung up to avoid speaking to her any more than I had to. It still didn't make sense why she'd call here instead of my place and then ask if I'm home. She was up to something, I could feel it.
I took my phone out of my bra to check the time but it had turned itself off more than likely due to no battery. I raced back inside, trying to find some sort of clock. It would easily take half an hour if not more time to get home. What if I only had five minutes before I was late? After what had happened last time, I didn't think it was a good idea to test my parents on this one.
I spotted Niall and Hailey from across the room, a little too close for comfort. It killed me a little inside but I disregarded it. It wasn't as if they were kissing or anything. I was surprised she hadn't tried to. Well, at least hadn't tried to in front of me. Anything can happen when you walk away from your boyfriend and his hot ex. I should know. I did kiss Josh after all.
I could tell from the way she stared into his eyes that it wasn't just a feeling I was having. It was so obvious that even I could see it which was saying something considering I was the girl who had only ever had one official relationship which I had already screwed up.
"Uh what's the time?"
Niall checked his watch.
"11:50am," he grinned at me, putting some distance between him and Hailey.
Shit. I didn't even know what time I had to be home. I knew it was somewhere around 12 or 12:30 am maybe even 1 but I just wasn't sure which one it was. It didn't matter though, I had to get out of here before Amber showed up or it would be a disaster. Especially if she knew about the kiss.
"I really have to go,"
I didn't bother to mention I wasn't sure when my curfew was. He nodded and stood up patting Hailey awkwardly on the back.
"See ya later, nice catching up," he said before leading me out the door and to his car.
