Gone
Ninety-Two
“Just a second,” I yelled.
When I held the phone back up to my ear again, all I heard was the dial-tone. I couldn't believe it; he’d hung up on me. Actually that wasn't true, I believed it. I expected nothing less from a coward like him.
I got up and unlocked the door, avoiding the mirror. I didn't really want to know how dreadful I looked.
“What was that all about? What’s going on?” Niall asked as I stumbled out of the bathroom.
Shit. He knew something. I could tell from the tone of his voice.
"What? Uh...oh nothing," I lied, "just my Mum. I was checking in with her,"
His mouth turned down at the sides as he raised his eyebrows at me. He'd seen through it, he'd seen through my pathetic attempt to bend the truth. It didn't help that I was a shit liar.
"Okay then..." he stared at me for a good long while as if observing me or something, "Well, I'm going to go back downstairs and hang out with a few of Emma's mates, you coming?"
If I remember correctly, she had told us to stay away from them and not to talk to anyone.
"Are you even allowed to do that?" I laughed.
A large group of people pushed past us. I guess we were in the middle of the hallway but still, it wasn't very polite of them.
"Emma is not the boss of me, I am. Besides, I'm not afraid of her and you shouldn't be either," he winked, suddenly back to his sweet, bubbly self again.
He introduced me to several guys all around Emma's age, some of them quite attractive, as we quickly made our way around the room. I could barely even remember the names. His facial expression changed dramatically as someone called out to him from across the room. My heart skipped a beat as I realised it was a female. A relative maybe? I hoped. Or at least an older woman?
She headed over to us. Unfortunately for me, she wasn't old or ugly even in the slightest. No, in fact this girl was young and beautiful. She had tanned skin, short dark brown hair, and could've easily been mistaken for a supermodel.
She rushed into his arms, tightly wrapping them around his neck. He stared at me over her shoulder, probably unsure of what to do. He looked alarmed, guilty almost. She let go, squeezing his cheeks between her hands. Niall was absolutely speechless.
"Oh my Gosh! It's been way too long," she grinned.
She finally noticed me, circling me like a shark.
"And who would this be?"
The tone of her voice was neither threatening nor friendly but there was something about her that made me wary.
