Gone
Seventy-Three
"Yeah Mum, I'll be home soon. I'm with Niall at the moment," I explained.
I hung up, shoved my phone back into my bra, and wandered back out to the lounge room to see Niall sprawled out on the lounge, scoffing a bag of chicken chips. I stood beside him so that I wasn't blocking his view of the TV.
"Anything good on?" I giggled.
He turned it off and rolled over so he could see me properly.
"Not particularly,"
What the hell was supposed to happen now? We'd had dinner and hung out for a bit before that but what else was there? I didn't want to leave just yet. I was enjoying myself too much.
"Oh my gosh," he sat up all of a sudden as if he had some sort of bright idea, "you could ask your parents if you're allowed to sleep over. I mean it’s just a suggestion,”
I grinned at his enthusiasm. I didn’t care that almost every single date we had had so far had included sleeping together-in a non-sexual way of course. It honestly didn’t bother me even in the slightest. There was something about him that kept me wanting more.
“No, that sounds great. I'm not too sure they will like it. I'll definitely try though,”
He did one of his adorable little smiles as I whipped out my mobile again. I was excited for her to say yes but scared she’d say no at the same time. I guess it just depended what mood she was in. I was crossing my fingers that she was drunk or just really tired. They were the two times she was the most vulnerable.
“Mum, hi, it’s Kaia,” I said.
“You ready for me to come pick you up?” She asked.
Oh God. This wasn’t a good sign.
“Uh…actually,” I began, trying to think of a plan or an excuse that would help my case, “I was ya know, just wondering if…I could sleep over at Niall’s tonight,”
I shut my eyes and counted back from ten like the doctor tells you to do when you’re about to get a needle. That’s how I was feeling right now. The silence was killing me from the inside out.
"No," she finally replied sternly
I knew she'd say that. Why did I even bother to ask? Clearly, that was her final answer.
"Oh..." I muttered with disappointment, "why?"
"You've spent a lot of time with him lately. I want you to thank his parents for having you over and say goodbye. I'm on my way to pick you up now,"
Sure enough, there was a roar of a car engine in the background. I didn't bother to argue. I hung up with a heavy heart and broke the news to Niall.
I laughed when he had the exact same reaction as me.
"Oh...okay...why?
"Well, Mum thinks that I've spent enough time with you. Total bullshit if you ask me. It's what teenage couples do, they spend time together. Ugh, parents!"
He nodded. Then I realised how insensitive that sounded considering his parents were dead. He didn't seem to mind. He was probably used to it by now.
