Gone
Sixty-Eight
He stopped the car about ten metres away from a massive white bricked estate. He laughed nervously as he unbuckled his seatbelt.
"We're here,"
He hadn't bothered to mention that he was rich. He led the way up the winding driveway anxiously.
Was this why he had been so hesitant to have me over? He probably thought I'd use his wealth to my advantage or something. It didn't change anything. I mean, it was pretty cool, but it wouldn't have changed my opinion of him either way.
Niall knocked several times on the door and stood back. I watched and waited behind him. There was a chair swing on the far side of the front porch we were standing on.
“Who is it?” A voice yelled from just inside the mansion, “Oh it’s just you,”
The door suddenly swung open to reveal a large middle-aged man with a friendly smile on his face.
"And who's this lovely young lady,"
He squinted at me through his glasses, trying to get a closer look at me.
I started to introduce myself as I'd been taught to do in these situations but Niall beat me to it.
"This is my girlfriend, Kaia," he turned to me, "Kaia, this is my Dad, Harold,"
I laughed at the emphasis he put on the word 'girlfriend'.
"So, you're the one he's been telling me about," he smirked.
Oh God, what had Niall told him exactly?
"Well don't just stand there, come on in guys, take a seat," he laughed, probably at the suspicious expression on my face.
As we made our way inside, I gawked at how magnificent the place was. There was a time when I would have thought of Amber's house as large but this trumped it. Family portraits covered the bright beige walls to match the white furniture. My school shoes clonked on the clean looking wooden floor. The more I looked, the more I noticed.
I perched on the edge of the lounge, trying my best not to make a wrinkly dint in the leather. He told me to get comfy and not to worry about messing anything up. Apparently that was what the hired help was for. Sure enough a maid entered the room a minute later, tidying up the lounge room.
"Take the rest of the week off. I'm sure you could use a break,"
He definitely wasn't what I was expecting. For a rich guy he was actually pretty cool, just as Niall had described him.
