Gone
Fifty-Three
"Lunchtime!" Mum shouted from the bottom of the stairs.
It was then that Niall decided that he should head home. He probably thought that he was intruding or something. Which he wasn't. Both of my parents had said that they were fine with 'us'. And therefore it shouldn't be a problem for him to stay at least until after lunch.
"Be there soon," I screeched, and then I turned to Niall, "You really don't have to leave,"
I wanted him to stay but as the old saying goes: absence makes the heart grow fonder. I guess there was no harm in testing that theory.
"You know, I would but I have a ton of assignments due this coming week and I haven't finished any of them. I'll call you?"
"Course," I smiled back.
The best thing was that I knew it wasn't just an excuse. He had no reason to lie. If he could stay he would. There was no doubt about that. Honestly, I couldn't wait for him to leave. The sooner he left, the sooner he could call. I loved the sound of his voice. It reminded me of golden syrup dribbling off a spoon and into my mouth. Who knows, maybe we would see each other tomorrow. After all, it was only Saturday.
He stumbled over the pile of crap right next to my bed as he gathered his stuff together. He shoved his car keys, a box of cough drops, and his wallet into his backpack, kissed me on the forehead, and slowly headed for the door. I followed him down the stairs.
"Really nice to meet you Mr and Mrs James," he said.
He waved in the direction of the kitchen where Mum and Dad were.
"You too, Niall," Mum yelled out.
Dad marched up to us.
"Take care. And make sure that the next time you take my daughter somewhere, you don't spend the night with her. I'd rather not have her end up on that trashy show: Sixteen And Pregnant, or whatever that rubbish is called,"
I rolled my eyes but I could tell Niall had taken my father's hostility it to heart.
"Of course sir," he sounded serious now, "won't happen again. At least not unless you give me permission,"
Dad nodded at him approvingly and headed back over to the kitchen, leaving us to it.
I was terrible at goodbyes and this time round was no different. I stood with my hands casually on my hips, staring into his gorgeous blue eyes dreamily.
"Thanks for staying with me last night. I hope my Dad didn't scare you off too much,"
He smiled at the ground.
"I'm not afraid of him. Besides, he's only trying to protect you,"
I didn't need protecting. Why couldn't anyone see that? That I could look after myself, make my own mistakes. I couldn't believe that even Niall had been roped into my Dad's warped view.
"Anyways, I best be off now. Those assignments aren't going to do themselves,"
I nodded silently and closed my eyes as he kissed me on the lips. I ran my hands through his luscious hair. I watched as he sauntered down the driveway to his car and beeped his horn as he disappeared down the road.
