Gone
Fifty-Two
It couldn't have been easy not knowing anything about his parents but he seemed almost calm when he spoke about it. He had probably thought about it countless times in his head. I know that's what I would have done if it were me.
"Well, I'm happy that you have people who care about you," I said in a low voice.
At that moment, we were interrupted for a third and hopefully the last time.
"Kaia come could you come help me with the groceries please...and who would this lovely young lad be?" Mum asked.
Her tone of voice suggested that she didn't approve of me having a boy in my room. It was either that or it was Niall that was the problem. I seriously hoped it wasn't the latter. It was weird because she was fine with me going out last night. In fact, from what I recall, she had basically told me to go out.
"This is my boyfriend, Niall," I answered hesitantly.
The suspicious frown on her face faded quickly when she realised that he was the guy she had heard so much about.
"Oh of course. Well honey that's wonderful. Nice to finally meet you Niall. Keep your door open Kaia, okay honey?"
And just like that, she left. Odd, very odd.
I didn't bother to question it any further. I was happy. Niall was happy. And from the way Mum had left us to it just like that, she was pretty happy too. That's the way I liked it, and the way I wanted it to stay.
"So," I started, sitting on the bed again, "do Harold and Louise care that you haven't come home yet?"
I had to ask. I mean, what if he was getting into trouble because of me?
"Nah. Don't worry. If they need me they'll call me. They're pretty good like that,"
I was so relieved that his adoptive parents were loose enough for him to spend a day or two with me and we wouldn't have to worry about them sending a search party. On the other hand, if I knew my parents, which I did, last night was the last time Niall could sleep over last minute. Or maybe even at all. Sure they had said we could be together but that more than likely didn't entail sleeping over after every date.
Maybe we should go to his next time, I thought to myself. A smug grin crept onto my face as I realised that that could work. If Niall's 'parents' were as low key as he said they were, they wouldn't object to me coming over a little after hours. I could just say I'm at Amber's for the night or something. Neither Mum nor Dad knew anything about what's going on between me and Amber. I could use that to my advantage.
"Huh," I said out loud, still deep in thought.
I stopped staring into space and turned to look at him.
"Hope you're daydreaming about me,"
Instead of answering, I just smiled. Well, what else was I supposed to do? I didn't want to tell him what I was really thinking about.
