Gone
Forty-Five
I could see the faint outline of whoever it was.
"Kaia,"
I was right. I knew it from the second he said my name. I wasn't sure if I should be angry with him anymore. He'd slept with my best friend but it was done; dealt with; in the past. It didn't mean I hated him any less. He wasn't forgiven either. Not completely. It was just that I had been in such a great mood lately. I shouldn't have to stop being happy just because he had decided to turn up. Amber was a different situation. She didn't have an excuse. I was happy to hold a grudge against her for the rest of our lives.
"Josh!" I replied a little bit too enthusiastically. I hoped they had taken it as shocked.
"I was just grabbing my stuff. One of my mates has a spare bed, said I could stay there for a while. I may as well. What’s the point in being here anymore? All I'm doing is screwing up your life,"
I almost felt sorry for him. Wait, what the hell was I thinking? This was the scumbag that screwed my best friend. Not so in the past after all, I chuckled. How was I supposed to respond to his self-pitying act he’d just pulled on us? I bet he was just trying to get me to admit I wanted him. Yeah, that sounded like him. Well, I wouldn’t give him what he wanted. Not this time.
“We should probably turn the light on,” Niall said, breaking the long heavy silence.
“Don’t bother,” Josh replied, “there’s a blackout,”
I thought blackouts only happened when it stormed. It wasn’t even raining.
“I want…uh…I...um...” I started.
I didn’t finish my sentence. I wasn’t sure what to say. I kind of wanted him to stay but telling him that would only make him think that it was okay to manipulate me. Which it certainly wasn’t. I could feel both Josh and Niall’s eyes on me as I stumbled on my words like the idiot I was.
"Kaia, what are you trying to say?" Niall asked, a hint of amusement in his voice.
"Nothing..." I muttered.
What was the point? If I was honest with myself, Josh was right. The only thing he did was make things messy. Or even messier than they already were. I didn’t want to tell him that though. I imagined how he’d react. As much as I hated him right now, I just didn’t think I had the lady-balls to kick him out of my house. It just didn’t feel morally right. Besides, it was only a few more nights. Couldn’t hurt.
The lights flickered and suddenly the whole house lit up. Josh wore a black beanie over his messy brown hair and a grey sweater to match his denim jeans.
“Mate, don’t leave,” Niall said.
He had obviously read the uneasy expression on my face. I knew he was pretty angry at Josh as well so when he spoke up, it really meant a lot to me.
“What would you know?”
