Gone
Forty-Four
“Kaia..." Niall cleared his throat, "Will you be my girlfriend?"
That was the thing he was so nervous about? I almost laughed out loud but instead, I kept it to myself because of how anxious he was. I had kind of already assumed we were a couple. Did I even want a relationship? I mean, I liked him, really I did. I just wasn’t sure it was such a good idea with everything that was going on at the moment with Josh and Amber. Probably the most cliché thought I had ever had. Everyone’s heard the story before of the girl who decided to wait because ‘it wasn’t the right time’. What if it was never the right time? Liking someone was a big deal for me. I didn’t 'like' anyone. And I didn’t usually go for blondes either. What could I say? He was irresistible.
Of course,” I finally answered with a smile.
The expression on his face was hilarious. It was like he was about to explode with happiness but was doing his best not to show it in case he came across as desperate or something. He gave me a kiss and a tight squeeze before starting up the car. The long ride home was filled with lots of conversation, laughter, and pleasant silences. When we got back to mine, none of the lights were on. I was guessing my parents were asleep or something so I did my best not to make too much noise. The door sighed as I opened it. I glanced over my shoulder at Niall who was standing awkwardly on the steps outside the front door.
“I had a really great time," he started.
I could tell that there was more he wanted to say but he stopped there. I pressed my body up against his, wrapped my arms around his neck and kissed him. He forced me against the wall and stopped for a moment.
“Are your parents home?” he frowned.
Not even I knew.
“Dunno,”
He shrugged and continued kissing me. His kisses became slower and softer as he got to my neck.
There was a loud crash in the kitchen. This time we both stopped.
“What was hell was that?”
I said it as more of a statement than a question. I wasn't scared, just annoyed about the interruptions. Niall motioned for me to stay where I was as he cautiously stepped inside the house. What if I didn't want to wait here? I obeyed him anyway and leant up against the auburn wall impatiently. Niall had disappeared into the darkness. Suddenly, there was faint whispering. I managed to catch a bit of it.
"What are you doing here?"
I couldn't tell who had said that.
"I live here, remember?"
At that point I tuned out. Oh my God. Was that...Josh? What the hell was he doing sneaking around my house like a burglar? I ran my hand across the wall, fumbling for the light switch. As my eyes adjusted to the darkness, I saw that I was getting dangerously close to knocking over one of Mum's favourite antique vases. I backed away slowly, running into someone.
