Gone
Thirty-Three
I couldn't stop glancing at the clock on the dashboard. By this point, I was beyond impatient. Had it taken this long on the way here? Traffic, I told myself, it was the traffic. I breathed a sigh of relief as I finally started to recognise some of the street names and houses. It wasn't long before he parked the car on the side of the road right near my house. I got out without even hesitating. He came round to my side to give me a hug and a kiss on the lips.
"Would you like me to come inside to meet your parents or...?"
I couldn't help getting butterflies in the bottom of my stomach as he said that. No one had ever 'come inside to meet my parents' before. Was it too soon though? We had only been on one date. I didn't want to rush anything. I wanted to do this the right way, not that I had any clue how to do that.
"Um, yeah...I mean, if you want to," I replied.
He took both my hands and looked deep into my eyes.
"But, do you want me to?"
"Um...I...I'm not sure," I finally managed to say.
He smiled, probably at how polite I was being.
"It's okay to say no," he said, "I won't be offended. How about I just see you at school tomorrow? It's a public holiday today so your parents probably want to make the most of it and spend the rest of the day with you,"
Pfft, yeah, right, I thought to myself. I couldn't say that though. I wasn't game to. I nodded meekly.
"Bye babe,"
He kissed me on the cheek and hopped back into his car. As he drove off, he beeped his horn on the way down my street.
Dad stood on the front lawn with a scowl on his face.
"Where the hell have you been? And who the hell was that?" He demanded.
He was wearing his expensive black and white suit he only ever wore to work. He had obviously only just gotten home now. He was way too overprotective for his own good. Whenever there was a new guy in my life-which was hardly ever-he always cracked the shits.
"Dad I'm sixteen, you don't need to worry about me," I whined.
He shook his head with disbelief.
"Honey, I'm your father, it's my job to worry about you. I don't care how old you are,"
I rolled my eyes.
"Whatever," I muttered.
As soon as I walked through the front door, I headed upstairs as quickly as I could. I heard Mum call out to me as I was halfway up the stairs.
"Kaia?"
My heart skipped a beat as I ambled back down a couple of steps. Mum stood at the bottom of the stairs with a weird expression on her face. Knowing her, she was probably still drunk.
"So...did you have a good time last night?" She asked.
I nodded, cautiously trying to figure out her angle.
"That's good, I'm glad, I'm glad..."
Odd, very odd, I thought.
"You...you can go upstairs now...if you want," she continued, "I want to hear all about your date with that boy, what's his name...Niall, isn't it? Maybe you'll stop hiding out in that room of yours and actually go somewhere for once,"
Wow, just wow.
