Thirty-One
I laughed nervously as he pulled out a huge white and red torch, a few pillows, and a maroon, blue, and green tartan picnic blanket from his bag. How had he managed fit all of that in there, I wondered. He placed the pillows and blanket on a flat bit of ground and lay down, motioning for me to do the same. As I did so, he immediately turned the torch on and sat it on the edge of the blanket so that we could see each other but it wasn't going to shine in our eyes. He gave my hand an affectionate squeeze. I grinned as I stared into his sparkly light blue eyes. His face was so perfectly lit that he anyone would have mistaken him for a Grecian God.
The stars had become more and more visible the later it got. They now covered the sky, twinkling at me. It would've been at least half past twelve by now.To be honest, I was getting kind of sleepy. Not enough to doze off again though. The only thing I wanted to do right now was stay up all night with Niall. And maybe make out. Okay, definitely make out. It was so nice being able to just kiss him and not have to worry about him taking it any further. Not that I didn't want him to. Of course I did. Just...not now. Not tonight, not on the first date. Despite the long-winded fling I had had with Josh, I did have standards.
"You're so beautiful Kaia," he whispered softly in my ear.
His voice was delicate and tuneful, almost like a song. For the first time in forever, I was speechless for a positive reason. No one had ever said that to me before and meant it. I could tell that he had by the tone of voice he said it in.

I woke up to the sharp trill of several rainbow lorikeets sitting above us on a branch. As my brain became less foggy and my eye sight less blurry, I realised I had survived. I had survived my first ever night with a guy that hadn't ended in more than a steamy make-out session. Well, it was true. Every time I had fallen asleep with a guy, something bad had happened. The best part was, he wasn't just any guy, he was my boyfriend. When I rolled over to face Niall, he wasn't there. Oh my God. I knew something bad was going to happen. It was all too good to be true. Where the hell was he, I asked myself. I propped myself up onto both elbows and squinted as I scanned the vicinity in an attempt to find him.
I gave up and stood up, my legs wobbling as they adjusted to being used. I could feel beads of sweat developing on my forehead and cheeks. It would've at least been thirty degrees (celcius) today.
"Niall?" I called out, "Niall, where are you?"
No one answered. I didn't want to sound like a complete nong, screaming his name for no reason, so I didn't shout, at least not loudly. I mean, honestly he could've been anywhere. As the heat started to get to me, I became more frantic.
"Niall? Why won't you answer me?"
I spun in circles trying to not to panic. The ground became a dizzy blur. As I collapsed into a heap, I heard footsteps on the pebbles, coming closer. I was too weak to lift my head Suddenly, they quickened as if in a sudden panic.
