Gone
Twenty-Three
I leant up against the wall closest to the fountain and waited impatiently, checking my watch every couple of minutes. Where was she? Why wasn't she here? There was only five minutes until the bell. I was curious to know what was so important that she had to tell me in person.
"Baby, where've you been?"
I looked to my right to see Amber. As usual she had modified the school uniform so it 'suited' her.
Her skirt was so high you could see her knees and her long red hair fell perfectly down to her waist. She was just as beautiful as ever but I still preferred it the normal way. She always insisted that her way was better. She kissed me on the cheek and stood in front of me, purposely blocking my line of vision. I moved my head from side to side, trying to look past her.
"Mhmm," I replied.
I wasn't listening. I hadn't even glanced at her. She sighed.
"You seem distracted. Everything okay?"
There was a hint of frustration in her voice. I figured Kaia had blown me off and gave up.
"Everything's fine, it's all good," I replied.
Was it though? What if Kaia really did need to tell me something but couldn't? I kissed her forehead, grabbed her hand and stared into her liquid brown eyes with love. It was impossible not to get lost in them.
"Did you blossom overnight? Not that you could be any more beautiful," I whispered.
She covered her face with her free hand, blushing like a bright red cherry tomato.
"I've never...felt like this about anyone before," I stumbled on my words, "I just...I think..."
I didn't get to finish my sentence before that bloody bell rang.
It was true though, I really did like her. I didn't know what it was, but there was something about her. Whatever it was had me mesmerised. It was hard to stop myself from jumping into anything too quickly. She really was too good to be true. I just hoped it would last. The last time I had invested emotionally in a girl like this, it hadn't ended too well. I was still emotionally scarred by that experience. Since then, I had found it hard to trust anyone. That had included Amber but as soon as she had become more than just 'the girl I hooked up with in Bali' I knew I could trust her.
"Want me to walk you to form?" I asked.
I had already forgotten about what I was going to say and by the looks of it so had she.
"Don't worry about it. I'll see you later babe,"

Kaia still hadn't shown up to school. I didn't know whether or not to be worried. I mean, it wasn't like she was my girlfriend or anything. I just had this awful sinking feeling lurking in my stomach. Josh and Amber sat either side of me, off in their own little conversation. I listened, contemplating if and when to interrupt them.
"I told you, I don't know. I haven't seen her since yesterday. I was going to break into her room but she's still mad at both of us. I just figured it would cause more drama. It's not my fault y'know-"
Were they talking about who I thought they were talking about?
"Guys?" I said urgently.
Either they hadn't noticed I was trying to ask them something or they didn't care. Neither of them reacted to my sudden interruption.
