Gone
Thirteen
He lay there, staring at me, his eyes looked almost hollow in the fluorescent light. Apart from that there was complete darkness. He outstretched his bloody hand weakly but I couldn't reach him. It was as if my feet were glued to the ground. I yelled his name but as his eyes glazed over I knew he was losing consciousness. I hated seeing him in pain like this but I couldn't do anything but stand there and watch. I fought back tears.
"You'll be okay. Stay with me Josh. Stay with me!"
He wasn't okay. My voice echoed as everything faded into one another.
I woke up with a scream to see Josh watching me intently. I swept a hand over my sweaty face and sat up quickly. What was it about 'get out of my room' did he not understand? Pretty sure I was speaking English.
"I thought I told you to piss off," I muttered grumpily.
He gave me a look.
"'Stay with me Josh, stay with me'", he mimicked.
"Shut up, I never said that,"
"Bullshit! Can't believe you had a dream about me. You totally want me," he snickered.
Ugh, I was so embarrassed. I would deny it if he told anyone. It was my word against his. The odds would be in my favour. I didn't want anyone. Especially not him. How could anyone want him? But when I told him that, he was refused to believe me. I mean, it did sound like I did but why would I after everything that happened? Dad interrupted my train of thought.
"Kaia? Josh? Dinner time,"
There was silence at the dinner table. No one was game to talk. We were all waiting for each other to start a conversation.
"So, Josh,"
We all turned to look at Mum to see what she was going to say, eager to not sit in silence the whole time. She was hesitant to finish her sentence.
"How has your mother been?"
He looked up from his food briefly and stuffed another mouthful of mashed potato in his mouth.
"Good thanks Mrs James,"
"Please," she smiled, "call me Sheryl,"
As soon as I had finished, I stood up from my chair and headed for the kitchen, glad to have a reason to leave.
"Sit down Kaia, don't be rude. we have a guest,"
I glared at her and sat back down with a sour expression on my face. Lucky me. I had the privilege of waiting for the world's slowest eaters to finish their food. I stared at my empty plate, bored out of my brain. The clock's ticking became louder, it seemed forever before the second hand reached the twelve.
"Well this is fun," I said sarcastically, slumping further into my seat, "what a great way to spend a Sunday night,"

"I'm not catching the bus to school with you. I'll walk if I have to," I said.
"See you later then,"
"Unfortunately,"
I waited a good three minutes before I followed him. I did end up walking the whole way there. I figured it was safer. I didn't see anyone I knew on my way but I knew from experience it was better to be safe than sorry.
