Midnight Calling

School Uniform

CHARLIE’S POV

If I die, please don’t cry, just look at the sky and say one last goodbye.

Waking up from a slumber which I hadn’t intended on taking, in the arms of someone who I hadn’t expected would of bothered to stay wasn’t quite the worst way to begin the start of a brand new day; but of course, I’d already convinced myself that I’d dropped my guard for too long which meant I was exposed to the world. The sweetest scent of cologne trailed from Louis’ chest and I found myself having a hard time believing that this was all too good to be true. My hands gently dancing around his belt, feeling the cold leather under my fingertips I wondered what had kept him here. How we’d ended like this. Eyes glancing to the window and noticing the 6 had been washed off the glass, I sighed gently, resting my head down again and tried to remember what had happened last night between the phone call and falling asleep.

Heading down to the kitchen and leaving Louis to be by himself upstairs, I found on note left by Chloe on the counter which read that she didn’t want to disturb us and would be expecting me at school today. I rolled my eyes and tapped my fingers against the wooden countertop. Fat chance of that happening. Yawning with a dry mouth and reaching to the dish rack to grab a glass I felt a cold, slender hand grab my wrist and spin me round for satisfaction.

“You know you look just like your mother when she was her age.”
“Ian, go away..”

I fought roughly, trying to pull my arm out of his grip and ended up stepping back, hips hitting the sink and finding myself lost for a cause. Ian’s warm breath blew across my face in disgust and my heart began racing fast than on the night I’d sworn I wish had not happened. His hands making their way to my hips and the smell of whiskey with every word he said becoming stronger, although not intoxicating, I was relieved when someone walked in, stubbing their toe on the doorframe and like polar sides of a magnet the two of us were separated without second glances.

“Did I interrupt something?”, I heard my mouth whisper. Why she felt obliged to care of Ian was beyond me. My father was a man 100 times more the gentleman that Ian would ever be and remained loyal to those around him - which is more than what I can say for this creep. Yes, he was almost never here and well.. it would have been nice to have someone around to show that all boys aren’t as cruel as the ones I went to school with but alas. Dad was dad; and in a twist of fate, when he drowned in the lake by the old cabin that part of my fairytale life had come to an end.

“No mum..”, I lied, covering up for my actions as guilty as a nun who hadn’t been to confession for sins.
“Why aren’t you at school?”, she questioned me; her eyes like dead bark off a tree staring straight through me.
“It’s only 8.. I don’t start for another..”
“DON’T TALK BACK TO ME!”
“But mom…”
“IAN’S MINE”, she began to squabble, “DON’T YOU EVER.. EVER..”
“He was going to rape me..”, I yelled out in a half whisper.

I could feel my eyes starting to fill with tears and really couldn’t bother trying to be strong and keep them back. I might have looked like I was living, but I was really falling to pieces. The memories of dad, the dreams about Ruby, the phone calls, Ian being provocative, my mother being a complete waste. Everything came crashing down around me and with the first tear drop; her hands collided with the side of my face.

“DON’T YOU DARE LIE TO ME GIRL! YOUR SISTER NEVER WOULD HAVE.”
“Mom.. I, I.. I swear..”, I began sobbing.
“RUBY WAS MY EVERYTHING AND YOU… YOU..”

I didn’t bother hanging around to hear the end of her sentence.

Legs carrying me as quickly as I could back upstairs, I slammed the door shut, pushing my dresser back in front of it to keep myself away from the rest of the world. Sobs quiet and my cheeks still red as dawn; a sleepy Louis had pulled me in quick smart and just as the other night and my father had years before, ran his fingers through my hair calming me down and gently shaking me to and fro.

“It’s okay, it’s okay..”, he coaxed quietly like a bluebird singing with the end of a harsh winter, “I’m here.. it’s okay.”
“I just..”
“Shhhhh.”

HARRY’S POV

I wasn’t quite sure what to expect when Louis called and explained that we needed to meet up at the old gym building at 3.30pm. His instructions were to wear something comfortable and not ask question. Those, I could deal with. The cold breeze of winter turning into spring chilled me through every layer I was wearing and I bounced around a little on the spot trying to keep warm. As per usual, a cigarette between my teeth and fingers playing with the lighter careful not to burn myself; I heard a cough I’d regular gotten use to in my early teenage years and spun around to see Louis; keeping his distance from me.

“You wanted to see me?”, I asked him, exhaling some clear white smoke into the arm and scratching at my ears like a bad habit.
“Charlie needs to go to the cabin”, he stated in a half whisper.
“What does that have to do with me?”, I asked, pointing a finger back at my chest.
“You went there with Ruby the most, know your way around it pretty well..”
“You could have just asked for directions”, I laughed.
“Don’t be a dick..”
“Boys.. really..”

The two of us snapped our heads around to look at the petite brunette who had just come out from class and interrupted our childish and petty squabbling. Dropping the half smoked stick to the ground and stepping on it to extinguish the forever flame; I pulled out the keys to my car, figuring I’d be the one driving and motioned towards the left of the car park. So much much for being on old territory for a while.

“C’mon, this way..”

A swift kick to the bottom of the front door and two taps to the hinges we were inside the old run down cabin house quicker than you could say open sesame. It had been a while since I’d been here; granted - but this warm, yet chilling feeling ran through my veins just like the last time I’d come. The walls were restless with secrets waiting to be shed and spread.

“I’ll take the back half of the cabin”, Charlie let out, motioning to the back rooms and wandering off ever so slightly. I watched as her tartan skirt hit her legs briskly as she walked and received stars from Louis as if I was doing something unworthy of motion.
“I’ll head outside then..”, I suggested creating enough distance between the 3 of us.

Feet carrying me out to the shed Ruby and I had shared a few intimate moments in, I struck the door open just as I had the cabin one earlier. Light fixture swinging gently in with the wind; I hunted around for the switch to get a better view and heard a car roll up as the fluorescent bulb flickered on. By the wall hung a series of knives and axes; all shapes and sizes, perfectly sharpened and silver lined; in the middle of the shed, a berkley horse up straight and completely medieval. Enough rope laying around on the ground, collecting dust made it clear someone had recently been here. The gentle sounds of the shed door swinging further open behind me caused me to turn and look at my company.

“Liam..?”, I stuttered, a little shocked to see him standing there.
“Hey.”
“What are you?”
“I was told I would find you guys here..”

CHARLIE’S POV

High and low, up and down, running in circles around the cabin I couldn’t find anything even close to what I was expecting. Truth be told, I wasn’t even sure what I was looking for. I’d disconnected the phone in the kitchen and lounge room just for safety precautions. There was no way my cell would get coverage out here. Hunting through the bedroom and kitchen, all I’d come across was a silver locket I remember my mother giving Ruby for her 16th birthday. Our old photos were still in it as if were only yesterday.

“You got anything?”

I spun around to eye off Louis leaning against the doorframe of the bedroom. I clutched the locket in my fist tightly and pushed it into my pocket, deep so that I wouldn’t lose it. Shaking my head and shrugging my shoulders, I headed over to him and sighed. Perhaps the search for Ruby was pointless and my death was inevitable; perhaps - someone was just trying to play tricks with my mind in the hope that I would crack. A school day turned wild goose chase, I felt my chin get raised by Louis’ fingertips and our eyes graze each others with defeat.

“Charlie, don’t be like this..”
“Don’t be like what Louis?”, I asked quietly, murmuring.
“This", he half laughed. It was infectious, "Smile. You’re too pretty to be down all the time. Too young. Too sweet.”
“Lou..”
“Charlie..”

A gentle hovering brought us closer together before the phone beside the bed started ringing and Harry and Liam had walked in, joining us for company. Our four sets of eyes danced around each other hoping to avoid the inevitable.

“I’ll answer it”, Louis acknowledged, swallowing hard before picking up the receiver. A series of hello’s came from his lips before he hung up slightly frustrated, “Nothing..”. Leaning down to find the switches and plugs connected into the wall, I watched him disconnect the phone - the last one in the cabin now being off the hook.

My shoulders dropped again and I clutched my stomach, nailing at the fabric of my uniform as the butterflies inside began to die.

“Harry, you find anything?”, I asked him, eyes stuck to the floor; not wanting to glitch.
“No..”, he responded sharing a glance with Liam. I wondered if the two of them were hiding something for my benefit. Perhaps it was like Louis and Chloe had said and they could be trusted.
“C’mon, we should get going..it’s dark”, Liam suggested, swinging his car keys on his fingers.
“Alright..”, I gave in not wanting to argue. I’d have enough of that when I got home - I didn’t need to deal with it here.

Footsteps and drags later, the phone rang again, causing us all to pause. How on earth? We’d all just seen Louis disconnect the thing. Shivers, shakes, squirms and silence; I stepped lightly towards the dial tone ringer, fingers lightly gripping at the receiver before placing it to my ear.

“Hello?”

After Louis didn’t get an answer, I wasn’t expecting one either.

“Hello?”, I called again taking a deep breath.

“Twinkle, twinkle Charlie star, Hope you get hit by a car.
How I really wish you’d die. Jump off a roof and try to fly.
Twinkle goes my sparkling knife, I will end your wretched life.”
