Midnight Calling

House Guests

CHARLIE’S POV

Whimsical rhymes at their finest and a horror moving beginning to play out right before my very eyes’ I took a few steps back, not having ended the call and rushed to the window facing the street, peering out into complete darkness. Not being one who wanted to seem like she scared easily, I tapped the phone in my palm, watching as the caller ended our conversation and sighed, letting out a sound which would have been more considerate towards a time closer to death. Oh how convenient, I was at that point. The touch of Liam’s hand on my shoulder caused me to whip myself around; stand at attention and scare me out of my wits.

“You all right Charlie?”, Liam asked, rubbing the scruff on his chin. I couldn’t reply straight away, not with the mess that was inside my head. Thoughts churning at a million miles per hour and having chain reactions with the dream I’d only woken up from a solid half hour ago. Nodding my head slightly and handing the phone over to him. I sighed and shuffled my feet.

“We should go.”
“Are you sure everything’s all right?”, he asked again. I felt myself freeze and stiffen up.
Little Charlie Fleming, what a surprise; look outside, you’ve got 7 days until you die”, I whispered.

LOUIS’ POV

What should have been an all night study session had quickly turned into a bout of video games and textbooks sprawled out amongst the floor in the living room. Hitting buttons on the controller like crazy in a mash of un-sequenced patterns my video game hero had lived to see through another battle. Forward, back, circle, square, cross. It was great being able to turn off this quickly without even wanting to try. A term paper on the history of women in Germany between 1917 and 1939 was still needing to be written; i’d at least gotten in the introduction out so, that was a start. College; the deadlines sucked. Headlights creeping in through the front house windows and temporarily blinding me unconscious, I pulled myself off the floor, heading over to the door following a series of knocks and was met by a young girl who I hadn’t seen in years wrap her arms around me tightly.

“Charlie..”
“I had that dream again..”

Walking her inside, arm around her waist and Liam following in pursuit; I kicked the front door shut and watched as Liam made himself at home like he always did. Charlie still burying herself into my chest and almost silent sobs escaping her, I ran my fingers through her hair like I’d seen her father do a million times before when she was younger and felt her calm down. Her fingers began to relax from around my shirt and drop slowly down to my waist. A part of me wondered what had caused such a reaction.

“Hey it’s okay.. it’s normal”, I tried reasoning with her, “We’re only human. We experience things like—.”
“I got a phone call”, she cut me off quietly. I licked my lips quickly, curious about the advancement in conversation.
“Who was it?”, I asked mimicking the tone in her voice.
“I don’t know.”
“What did they say?”

As if it had been scripted; Charlie let slip between her lips a line which I could tell had been running a muck inside her head for however long she’d known about it. My grip tightening about her a little more, I began rocking her gently from side to side; unsure of what else to do. Saying anything would have just backfired because well, I was never the kind of guy to think before opening my mouth and with how delicate she seemed already, the last thing I wanted was to push her over the edge. The sound of a smash with crockery came from the kitchen and without hesitation; I walked the younger girl in through the house with me not wanting to let her go just yet.

“Sorry…”, Liam half yelled, picking up the white china from the tiled floor and piling it up in his hands.
“Seriously?”, I laughed at him, noticing the tiniest of smiles cross Charlie’s lips.
“I was hungry..”, Liam explained, throwing the broken ware in the bin and heading back to making whatever snack he had been preparing, “I’ll be quieter this time.”

“This time?”

The voice wasn’t one I was expecting on hearing only because, I assumed she’d been asleep the entire time. Bella wandered into the kitchen with a smirk on her face and a shirt of mine on her with shorts a little too small for comfort. Feeling Charlie let go of me and create a distance, Bella skipped over; tugging at my wrist and playing a doe-eyed.

“You… just came in..?”, I asked her quietly. A peck between our lips set Charlie’s eyes straight to the ground and Liam’s rolling to the back of his head.
“Yeah, headed out to the drug store”, she explained, “Needed some aspirin.”
“I could of gone out for you..”, I offered, watching as Bella headed over to the sink to fetch a glass of water.

Hips swaying from side to side and her long rich coffee locks draping perfectly over her shoulders, she looked back, green eyes piercing and smiled at me.

“You had homework to do..”
“I um..”
“You haven’t done any more yet have you?”
“Well not but..”
“Louis, I went to bed early because you promised you’d not be distracted.”

A whistle and snicker from Liam made the situation that even more tensile and bothered. Hearing the tapping of fingers against the kitchen countertop and pushing my attention toward it; I noticed Charlie push up off where she was standing and excuse herself from the room. The creeping of feet against the hardwood floors in the hallway told me without a doubt she was looking for an escape.

“You don’t have to go..”, I explained to her, hand resting on the door above her as she played with the lock and handle. Turning her around with a quick shift of force power so that her back was against the black oak frame, our eyes met in a plead of insanity.
“I don’t feel comfortable with her here.”
“Charlie.. you can trust Bella - she’s.. just a little..”, I paused looking for the right kind of words.
“Territorial?”, Charlie suggested.
“No.. just..”
“Look, Louis, it was a bad idea coming here.”
“Charlie, no just—.”
“Tell Liam thanks for the lift”, she explained, forcing the door open even with my weight still half on it.
“Are you okay to get home?”, I asked not really wanting her to leave in the state she was in.

All she did was nod in agreement with my statement and rub at her eyes which were still red raw.

“Yeah.. I, I.. I need to go find somethings.”
“Call me in the morning?”, I half begged in argument, “We’ll figure things out.”
“Sure..”, she choked up, wanting nothing more than to get away.
“Hey..”, I stopped her again, just once more - tugging at her wrist to hold her attention, “Charlie, we won’t let anyone hurt you. I won’t let anyone hurt you. Promise.”
Hazel eyes finding their way through her lashes up to mine and sinking rather than swimming in a train packed with delusion, Charlie dropped her head and pulled her wrist away, letting it hit her side without matter.

“Louis, don’t make promises you can’t keep. We..”, she choked, circling her hand around in the air, “Couldn’t save Ruby… don’t lie to me and tell me you alone won’t let me get hurt.
