Chapter 1
The cold air hit me hard as I stepped outside. The wind harshly whipping my brown hair around, the trash bag sliding against the cement. I lifted the the heavy bag of garbage into the dumpster and turned to walk back into my house when I saw a tall muscular man running my way. His face hidden by the night.
A glimmer of light reflecting off of something in his hand, the closer he gets I notice the glimmer of light is a knife.
Hurrying up the steps to my house I hear his quick steps getting louder, faster. I finally reach my door and burst through it and close it swiftly behind me, locking it all in a quick speed.
Hopefully he didn't see me. What if he did? What if he's at my door? I have to look, but my hands are shaking. Come on Morgan. Get it together. I took a deep breath and looked through the peep hole.
There he is standing on my porch. Dressed in all black. Face hidden in the shadow of his hood. Dark eyes meet mine through the small hole.
Stay calm Morgan. Think.
I back away from the door and reach for the house phone on the side table. Quiet. Stay Quite. I step towards the table and my foot stubs the leg.
"Shit." I quickly put my hand over my mouth
The man outside starts kicking the door. Soon he gets the door open and charges inside. He stops in his tracks and just stares. My eyes wide and searching his face to try and get some identification.
He starts to run at me with the knife in the air.
-
I've never been so happy to wake up for school, anything is better than to relive that day. I sit up in my bed breathing heavily with a thin sheet of sweat on my forehead. The clock on my nightstand reads 6:30 AM. My mom pokes her head in my room and says
"You ready for your first day?"
"Yeah, I'm actually kind of looking forward to it you know? A fresh start."
"I know. It's not going to be easy to forget what happened," Her smile hopeful "but just try not to think of it."
"I'll try." with that she leaves my room and I hear her footsteps getting more distant. My bare feet padding against the cold hardwood floor across the hall to the bathroom.
The dark circles under my eyes have become more prominent over the last few days due to my lack of sleep. I try my best to cover them but it's no use. I walk back into my room to get dressed.
There's a bowl of fruit waiting for me at the table in the dining room. I sit down and stab a strawberry with my fork. My mom makes her way to the table with two more bowls of fruit in her hands. She sets one of the bowl in front of her and the other in front of the seat at the head of the table.
We eat in silence until my dad's footsteps can be heard rushing down the stairs. He's struggling to tie his tie.
"Good morning sweetie." He says as he kisses the top of my head
"Good morning." I mutter under my breath
"Are you excited?"
"I'm going to be late. Mom I'm ready to go."
"Ok. let me just get my bag. I'll meet you in the car." She says
I get up and slung my backpack over my shoulder and start towards the garage.
-
The drive to school is silent except for the radio playing softly. My mom hums to the song and taps her fingers on the steering wheel to the beat of the song.
I look just like my mom, same dark brown hair and light brown hair. My hair flows just past my shoulders.
Soon enough we pull up to my new school. I step out of my warm car and into the cool, crisp air outside. There are various groups of people scattered around, i'm assuming by how they all dress similar that they are each in their different groups. I walk past the group of people in all black with multiple piercings and skulls on their shirts. Some of them shoot me glares but I ignore them and continue walking.
I finally make it to the front office to get my class schedule. The front office hands me my schedule. She had this irritated look on her face if she doesn’t want to be here. I don’t blame her coming to school everyday is just a hastle. My first class is US History, but I have no idea where the room is.
I try to look for the room but with everyone rushing to get to first period was no help. I see a tall girl with long black hair with a friendly smile plastered on her face. I make my way towards her and tap her on the shoulder.
"Um excuse me. Can you help me find Mr. Perry's room."
"Yeah, Of course!" she smiles "You must be new? Where are you from?"
"I'm from Salem, its about an hour away from here."
"Cool, cool. So what's your name?"
"Morgan. Yours?"
"I'm Emily."
"What grade are you in?"
"I'm junior, You?"
"Me too."
"Awesome. Well this is Mr.Perry's room. I'll be in Mr. Winston's room across the hall so, just in case you need me to help you find your next class." She gestures to the room directly across from us.
"Ok. thank you!"
-
The bell rang and she trotted across the hall into Mr.Winston's room giving a tall man a high five on the way in, probably Mr. Winston. I walk into the class and make my way to the front desk where a young man sits. His hair slicked back with way too much gel. He looks up at me through his glasses and simply says "Schedule?" with his hand out like he's begging for money. I hand over the piece of paper. He signs it and hands it back to me.
"Welcome to SpringField High School. Home of the Grizzly Bears." He said with so much sarcasm "Take a seat anywhere."
I walk toward the back and sit in an empty desk. Trying to avoid that “oh look its a new kid we should keep staring at her”look. Mr.Winston writes the class work on the board, explains it and sets us free to either do the assignment or not. Which half of the kids here I bet are not going to do it and talk about what the did last night. Unlike me which I have no one to talk to I have no choice and have to do the work. Yay Morgan!
After the bell rings I pack up my stuff and drop the assignment in the basket by the door on my way out. I see Emily standing with a boy who has green eyes and curly hair. She waves over to me and I walk towards her.
She introduces me to the boy, Harry. Which also happens to be her boyfriend. He’s so perky and happy. The way he looks a Emily is just the cutest thing. The way his big green eyes grow when Emily just smiles. Damn these teenage couples. We all walk together to the next class. We part ways once we reach to my class, which is AP english. Yet again another class that I’m alone and guess where I sit? Yeah, the back. But luckily we have science together so, it make me some what happy that I won’t get to sit alone.
English goes by slow, then math. Finally I see Emily's familiar face sitting at a table in the middle of the science lab .I see a new face sitting next to her. Her hair the same length as mine, but a darker shade of brown. Her eyes a deep brown. The way she moves her hands around to talks makes me giggle a bit. I sit next to Emily. She introduces me to the stranger. Her name is Melissa.
We sit through the long science lecture. I get to know more about Emily and Melissa. Pretty nice chicks. I would of assume they would be these high class bitches who go after school to get their nails done. I misunderstood them. Melissa is on the soccer team which is super great because that makes one thing in common.
The bell rings for lunch. Being So generous of them they offer me to sit with them. Thank god because I would of have sat at a shity bathroom stall.
Once we make it to the lunch area we settle at the tables.I pull out my warm soggy ham sandwich that my mom made. It feels like a cow heart. As time passes more people settle into the table introducing themselves to me. One boy in particular caught my attention. The way his hair is parted. His eyes are a really pretty brown unlike mine which are the shade of shit. Liam.
Everyone was trying there best to be friendly with me, but when it comes to socializing I’m just really shy. I do appreciate them being friendly. It gives me some confidence to talk. Plus I need to make new friends and start my life all over again.
Everyone at the table are having different conversations with one another while me I'm looking down at my feet. I stop once I hear someone clear their throat. I look up and my eyes meet the most beautiful shade of blue I have ever seen. His hair framing his face. His figure towering over me.
"You're in my seat." He says loudly drawing attention to us.
My cheeks start to turn red.
"Louis, c'mon man leave her al-" Liam tries to defend me but Louis interrupts him
"No. This is my seat, I always sit there."
I finally speak up letting him have his damn seat. "I'm sorry. I didn't know. I'll move."
It’s not like you name is on the seat. Asshole.
He rolls his eyes and as soon as I get up he puts his stuff down in the space I was sitting in. He doesn't even sit down,he just starts talking with some blonde guy. Idiot.
Liam shakes his head and gets up giving me his seat.
"Thank you." I say in a low voice
"Anytime." He says placing his hand on the back of my shoulder. His hand lingering there for a while.
A glimmer of light reflecting off of something in his hand, the closer he gets I notice the glimmer of light is a knife.
