Never Stop Running

Chapter 4

"Bye..." Lily mumbled, though she didn't look back. She kept one hand on the adventure novel in her pocket, and the other on the compass that hung around her neck on a piece of weird black material. She wasn't sure if it worked, but it was something she had found in the cabin. It reminded her of the boys, and of The Place Where She Almost Had A Home.
Finally, she exited the woods. It had seemed like a long time, but it actually wasn't. It was just a small stretch of woods that she just didn't particularly like.
Lily walked down to the docks, wondering where she could catch a ride. She spotted Captain Hernadew's ship, but didn't go near it. If they had seen the news, there would be too many questions, and she wouldn't be able to answer even half of them. She removed her hand from the necklace, instead gripping the gun in her other pocket, in case there was a fight.
It was beginning to look like she would have to board Hernie's ship. She doubted anyone would take in a stranger who looked like she had just had a run-in with Chuck Norris. She decided to just suck it up and ask Hernie for help.
"Hernie!" She yelled, leaning over the railing. He was currently working on something on the boat, with his back to her.
He jumped, turning towards her. "Geez, Lilsworth. What's up with your face?"
She rolled her eyes. "It's a face. Listen, can I grab a ride?"
"Sure. Where to, Miss America?"
"America."
"Ah, returning to your namesake. Get in! We ride at dawn." Great. He was being dramatic again.
Lily boarded the boat. "You mean leave, right?"
Hernie waved his hand vaguely. "Sure, sure."
~
A few hours later, Lily leaned over the railing of the vessel, watching waves gently rock the boat back and forth. The sun reflected light off of the ocean, and, pretty or not, it hurt her eyes.
She felt something nudge her leg. Lily looked down to see Nessie, wagging her giant tail and repeatedly whacking her with it. "Hey girl." The dog was holding what looked like a real bone. "Lay down."
Nessie obeyed, and Lily grabbed a spiral notebook from the chair beside her and sat down in it. Hernie had left them both for her at her request.
Lily opened it and started to draw with the pencil she had stuck inside. Nessie was the perfect model - she didn't move much, except to wag her tail, bark, or gnaw on her bone.
Lines trailed from the pencil tip, almost of their own accord. The pencil danced across the page, almost seeming to lead the dog. Lily started to hum as she drew. It was some song she had heard the boys practicing.
The boys...
She shrugged the thought off as soon as it occurred, like brushing fur from a black coat. It stuck, no matter how hard she tried to get it off.
The pencil nearly snapped with the force of her hand, but finally Lily released the pressure and resumed what she had been doing prior to...the thought.
Finally, she was done. It was the german shepherd, her tail moving slowly, with the bone in her mouth. It was nothing special, really. Something she would normally draw.

Notes

Late at night. Low muse. I'm sorry it's so short.
