Blue Velvet
Sweeter Than Fiction
My life wasn’t supposed to turn out like a melodramatic fiction written by a very good writer. I wasn’t supposed to be based upon the main female character in this story because I’m nothing in comparison to all the girls he’s ever met in his life, especially not to the girl who once took his whole heart but left it broken in pieces.
I was the weird girl. He was the perfect but lonely man. Our characters were never meant to meet one another. We weren’t even meant to understand what each of us was going through because we’re complete opposites. It’s a big ass lie that opposites do attract because why would you want to be with someone who’s not like you?
We were not meant to complement. Our friendship –somewhat questionable relationship- wasn’t meant to happen. Right now wasn’t supposed to be an excerpt from the plot of a twisted storyline.
But as strange and sweet as a fiction novel, our moment was inevitable. If anyone was reading my story, we have then reached the chapter which brings clarity to every question asked from the very beginning.
If I was the writer of this novel, I would name this chapter ‘Sweeter than Fiction’.
My heart was racing mad right against my chest. Either was it because of the adrenaline from running back to his apartment or was it because our bodies were closer than what’s right, I didn’t care anymore. I needed to know. I just needed to hear it from him. I want him to tell me right from his own beautiful sweet lips those words my character was never meant to hear.
Eyes lost to each other’s stare, I slowly brought my hand to my neck, clutched the small locket-like recorder that hang from it.
“Why didn’t you just tell me?”
I meant it to sound demanding, but it didn’t come out like I planned it to be at all. I don’t want to show him that deep inside I’m actually terrified of this sudden turn of events to us. It was just last night that I was reading him parts of my favorite book and that I felt his lips on mine as he stole a goodnight kiss when he thought I was already sleeping. Now we’re standing right in front of each other, with a confession literally hanging from my neck that changed everything about us.
Suddenly, I felt his cold fingertips grazed mine and without even looking, he managed to press play.
And just right after I heard the last word echo from the recorder, he leaned his face forward, his lips so close to mine as he softly whispered, “I was afraid you’ll forget.”
I didn’t. For the first time, I didn’t.
He even made me realize that I’ve already been in love with him for so long. I am in love with a man whose reality was far more interesting than all the books I have ever read in my entire life.
“I can’t have you if you’ll not remember those words. Please don’t forget, my little Blue Velvet.”
As he closed the small gap between our lips, I told myself,
This story is going to be better than any fiction ever written.
