Here We Are

Chapter One

“I want a latte without the coffee in it,” a girl no older than fourteen said to me. My shift was over now, but my manager, Brooklyn, told me I could make time to serve her.

“Uh….that would just be milk,” I replied.

She looked at me like I just insulted her mother. “No it isn’t!”

I let out a long sigh. “You come in here every Friday and ask for a latte without coffee. And then you know what? I tell you, ‘That would just be milk.’ Then you get mad at me, call me some names, and then my manager comes out and gives you a free carton of milk for your troubles.”

“Ev, calm down,” Brooklyn said to me as she walked over to where we were.

“Hi Brooklyn!” the girl beamed.

“Hi. I usually agree with the customers, but sweetie, you’ve come here every Friday for the past month doing this. Don’t you think you’ve caused Evelyn enough trouble?”

The girl smiled and nodded. “I’m so sorry! I just like seeing you! I’ll stop causing trouble!” She then turned around and walked out the door.

I looked at Brooklyn. “She really is into you, Brooke.”

She let out a chuckle. “She’s a little young for me. She’s also the wrong gender.”

“Are you ever going to tell her that?”

She shrugged. “She tips me really well.”

After work, I headed home to my sister’s flat. Whenever I worked, I worked nine to ten hours a day, so when I got home, I usually crashed. When I got home, I walked into my room and threw myself down on my bed. I pulled my phone out of my pocket and dialed Adrian’s number. After a long day of work, I really liked to talk to him. He knew just what to say to me.

“Hi Evie!” he answered.

“Hi Adry. How’s it going in Georgia?”

“Without you, it sucks.”

I let a little smile form on my face. But then is quickly faded. “I’m sorry. But you know I just couldn’t stay in that town after mom got arrested.”

“I know. I just really miss you, Evie.”

“I miss you too.”

“I need to tell you something.”

I shot up in my bed. “What is it?”

“I should have told you this before you left for London, but I just got scared. I don’t think I can go on any longer without you knowing. Evelyn, I –“

“EV, ARE YOU HOME? COME IN HERE!” my sister yelled as she walked into the flat.

“Adry, I’ll call you later.” I hung up on him and walked into the kitchen where my sister was. “Hi Maddie. How was the interview?”

“The same as all the other interviews. ‘What’s going on in your life?’ ‘When’s the next album coming out?’ ‘Are you single?’ And I gave the same answers. ‘Working, soon, of course.’”

“Do you mean to make yourself sound like the most boring person in the planet?”

She let out a huge laugh. “They don’t care what I say. It’s just for publicity.” She sat down at the table in the kitchen. “Are you doing anything tonight?”

“Lying in my bed and hoping to fall asleep for the rest of my life?”

“Well, you’re not doing that anymore. You’re coming with me.”

I shot her a funny look. “I … uh … what?”

“There’s a party thing tonight that my publicist says I have to go to, and you’re going with me.”

“But…why do you want me to go?”

“You have lived her for two months and you haven’t seen any nightlife. You need to go out.”

I shook my head. “No thanks. I’ve been at work all day. Plus, I’m not a party person. Especially since a bunch of celebrities are going to be there. I am the farthest thing from famous.”

“You’re kind of famous! People know you’re my sister,” she reminded me.

“Oh yea h, of course. ‘Oh hey Madelyn? How’s your sister? What was her name … Ernie, Everest, Eagle?’”

“You’ve only gotten called Eagle that one time!”

“I also don’t have anything to wear. The nicest things I own are a pair of dress pants and a flowery tank top.”

She stood up and started walking to her room. “Follow me.” When we got into her room she opened her wardrobe. “Take your pick.”

“I can’t wear one of your dresses … what if I’m eating something and I just drop it on myself?”

“I don’t care. You’re going. Now pick a dress.” She pointed to all the choices. I slowly made my way up to the wardrobe and looked at all of the options. They were all gorgeous dresses that were given to my sister to wear at award shows or other fancy events. Some she just bought because she thought she could wear them later. I eventually went with a short, strapless dress that was a deep purple color. I only picked it because it had pockets.

I went to my room and put it on. When I looked at myself in the mirror, I just shook my head. I never looked good in dresses, and this was no exception. I even put on makeup, put in my contacts, and curled my hair. After I was done getting ready, I went into the living room. When Madelyn saw me, she let out a gasp.

“Evelyn, you look amazing in that dress. You look better than I ever could.”

“Says the girl who could wear a gorilla suit and still look good.”

She reached out her hand for me to grab. “Come on, there’s a limo waiting outside for us. We’re going to be late.” We then left the flat and headed to the club the party was at.

When we pulled up, I noticed that we were about to walk on a red carpet.

“You didn’t tell me we were walking on the red carpet! You know I hate getting my picture taken!”

“You’re not walking on the carpet. I’m being dropped off and you’re going in the back entrance. Trust me once in a while, sis!” She got out of the car and until she closed the door all you could hear was, “Madelyn! Madelyn over here!” We drove away and the driver pulled around back.

“This is your entrance, ma’am,” he murmured from the driver’s seat. I nodded at him and exited the limo. When I entered the club, it was like nothing I’ve ever seen before. I had been to a few clubs back in the United States to watch musicians play, but this was just extravagant. I didn’t belong here among these people. I didn’t know who many celebrities were because I never watched television at home or used the internet, but you could tell how wealthy they all were just by looking at what they were wearing.

I started to look around for my sister. I needed to tell her that I was calling a cab and going home. Being among all these people just made me realize how much of a loser I was. I mean, I worked at a coffee shop and all the people in this room were millionaires. When I finally found my sister, I noticed she was talking to someone. I didn’t know who he was, but it was a guy.

“Uh, Madelyn, I think I’m going to-“

She turned around to look at me and then piped up. “Evelyn! Glad you found me. I want you to meet a good friend of mine.” She pointed to the mystery man. “Ev, this is Harry Styles. Harry, this is my sister, Evelyn. Now you two talk, I need to find Sheeran.”

She walked away and he held out his hand for me to shake, so I took it. “Nice to finally meet you. Every time I see Madelyn she always says something about you.”

“Good things, I hope,” I replied. Harry was super cute, but if he was like everyone else in the room, then he was probably really famous. I didn’t deserve to talk to him. The only reason people knew me was because my sister was famous.

“Of course. You look lovely tonight.”

I could feel my face turn red. Guys usually didn’t compliment me, and a famous one just did.

“Oh, I’m not … well, thanks.” He flashed me a smile that made me swoon. I wondered if he was just being like this because Madelyn was his friend. Maybe he actually did think I was attractive? I didn’t know. However, I did want to ask him a few questions. “So, are you from around here?”

“I live in here in London when I’m not on tour. Where are you from?”

So he was a musician of some kind. No wonder I thought he was so attractive. “I’m from Atlanta, Georgia.”

“I love Atlanta! We perform there all the time.”

“Are you in a band, or a solo thing?”

When I asked that, he let out the biggest laugh I’ve ever heard come from someone. “You’re joking, yeah?”

I shook my head. “No … why would I be joking?”

He looked at me with a confused look on his face. “You really don’t know who I am?”

“Sorry … today is the first time I’ve heard of you.”

The tone of his voice changed from kind to irritated. “I’m in the group One Direction. How could you not have heard of us?”

“I don’t watch television or listen to the radio or anything like that…”

“You must be a boring person then, seems like.” That attraction I felt for him fell.

“Excuse me, but I’m not boring. You have no idea what I do with my life.”

“You sure? You don’t live life like your sister does.”

“No, I don’t, but I’m pretty content with what I do.”

“You’re a liar. While your sister is hanging out with people like me, you’re stuck at a coffee shop like a loser.”

That was the first time I’ve ever slapped someone, let alone a celebrity.
