Stars & Stripes

Boys will be boys.

“Olive,” A crisp voice called urgently over the blue tooth in the brunette’s ear, “I need to speak to you in my office.”

The brunette stopped typing up her report immediately and stood up rigidly, straightening out her black pencil skirt. She made her way around her desk and pushed open the glass doors behind her. She cleared her throat to announce her presence.

The eyes that the crisp voice belonged to looked at her expectantly, “Sit down.”

The brunette nodded and took a seat in one of the expensive, odd looking white chairs in front of the woman’s desk. “Yes, Julia?”

“Olive, I just received some troubling news.” Julia peered at Olive over her glasses.

Olive thought about every mistake she had made, straining to figure out what she had done he impossible to keep clean.

“Who?” Olive asked regretfully.

“That boy band from England. I believe they are calling them the newest ‘British Invasion’.” Julia said mostly to herself before looking up at Olive. “One Direction. You’ve heard of them, right?”

Olive couldn’t stop the painful sigh that exited her full lips. Of course she’d heard of them. Everyone in the PR business had. The buzz around the office was they were the biggest nightmare to clean up after. When they weren’t doing shows, most of them were partying or sleeping around.

Those were the rumors. Olive didn’t know them personally but nobody in the firm seemed particularly fond of the ‘British Invasion’.

“I promise they aren’t as bad as you think. The word around the firm has been greatly exaggerated.” Julia said quickly, noting her disdain. “I’ve met the boys before; they’re actually quite sweet and charming. But, boys will be boys.” She said meaningfully. “And that’s were you come in.”

“And what exactly am I coming into?”

“Stay close to them. Make sure they don’t get too crazy. Keep an eye out and don’t let the wretched tabloids get wind of where they are and what they’re up to.” Julia warned sternly, like Olive had failed already.

This seemed like an impossible task. Maybe she already had failed.

“Only because I have no other choice.” Olive muttered, “And I don’t want to be the coffee fairy for the rest of my life.”

Julia smiled, greatly relieved, “I knew I could count on you.”

“Am I excused?” Olive brushed a small piece of hair that had fallen out of her slicked back bun.

“Of course.” Julia nodded, “You need to pick up the boys in an hour at the airport.”

                                                                  + + +

Olive borrowed one of the company cars: black and inconspicuous. The type of car they used to shuttle celebrities without being noticed. Olive had always felt a little suspicious of black SUV’s so she never understood why people used them. A large, tinted SUV was just as much a red flag as a bright, flashy car.

It took Olive an hour and twenty minutes to get to the airport with traffic. By the time she arrived, she noticed five boys dressed in bright colors receiving suspicious glances from onlookers, mostly teenage girls whispering excitedly.

Olive parked the car on the side of the road, directly in front of them and hopped out, smoothing out her skirt in the process. Quickly, she made her way to the other side of the SUV and called to them. They pushed their large sunglasses down their noses at the same time, glancing at her cautiously.

“I’m Olivia Mann.” She told them quickly, “I work for Julia Morgan at NYPR. Get in.” Without another word, they hurriedly threw their ridiculous amount of luggage in the back of the car. Four of the five hopped in the car before they were finally called out.

“H-Harry S-Styles?” A wide-eyed, red faced girl stuttered, looking like she was about to pass out. Olivia noticed the way the boy with a red beanie and curly brown hair flopping out of it parted his lips in surprise, like he had never been called out in public before.

“Oh my, God!” She screamed suddenly, “It’s Harry Styles from One Direction!”

Olivia wretched open the passenger door and nudged Harry in, swiftly making her way to the driver’s seat and speeding off, the tires screeched painfully as she did so.

The boys in the back seat struggled to glance out the back window (though their vision was obscured by their absurd amount of suitcases), chuckling to themselves as if this was all a big joke to them.

Olivia, however, had experienced her first close call with these boys. Now everyone would know One Direction was in New York. Things were off to a rocky start.

The curly haired boy next to Olivia didn’t laugh like his friends. He slipped off his sunglasses and settled into the leather seat, pursing his thin lips.

The boys in the back were talking rambunctiously about what they were going to do once they got to the hotel when he finally spoke up.

“I’m Harry Styles by the way.” He glanced over at Olivia, smirking lightly. She had a feeling she was going to see a lot of that look.

“I had no idea.” Olivia mumbled back, keeping her eyes on the road. She could feel his gaze on her right cheek but refused to look.

“I didn’t ask for sass, did I—Olivia, was it?” He asked. The brunette nodded, glancing quickly behind her when she noticed no one but Harry was speaking.

“I’m Niall.” The blonde in the back spoke up, grinning widely.

“I’m Louis.” The shaggy haired boy next to him piped up.

“Zayn.” The darker skinned one nodded.

“And I’m Liam.” The dirty blonde by the window announced.

“I’m Harry Styles.” Harry Styles repeated.

Olivia restrained herself from rolling her eyes. “It’s nice to meet you.” She answered instead.

“This is going to be a great couple of weeks. I can feel it.” Niall kept grinning ridiculously. “We’re going to have a lot of fun.”

Harry smirked again at Olivia, “All kinds of fun.”

Olivia breathed in deeply through her nostrils. She was in way over her head.
