Overworked

Wednesday 5th September, 2028
Maddie’s P.O.V
6am, the alarm bell is ringing. I rolled over and grabbed my phone, turning the alarm off and got out of bed looking like a zombie. I walked into the bathroom and went to the toilet before getting into the shower. It well and truly woke me up and when I got out I wrapped a towel around myself and went into the closet. I put on some jeans and a top and dried my hair. I left the closet and sat down at my dressing table putting on my make-up and jewellery. I tied my hair up into a bun and took one last look in the mirror. Satisfied, I stood up and went downstairs. First, I walked into Brooklyn’s room.
“Get up honey,” I opened her curtains. She groaned and rolled out of bed. “Back to the real world sweetie,” I got her uniform out and put it on her desk. I made her bed while she went to have a shower and then got Adam up. He wasn’t as easy to wake up as Brooklyn and refused to get out of bed. Once he was up and in the bathroom it was time to wake Melissa up. She was easier and excited about school. I will never understand 6 year olds… I gave her her uniform and she put it on and started packing her bag. I went downstairs and made their lunches and breakfast. Harry came down at around 7.
“Are they up?” He asked, putting the kettle on.
“Yeah, Lis is actually excited,” I laughed and Lis bounded down the stairs.
“Mummy, can you do my hair?” She asked.
“Go get me some hair bobbles then.” I said and she ran into the bathroom and came back with about 5. “Pigtail plaits?” I guessed and she nodded excitedly. I laughed and sat down to do her hair. It took me about 5 minutes and then she had breakfast. Adam and Brooklyn came down with their bags and sat at the table for breakfast. I gave them it and they quickly ate it knowing they have to be at school in half an hour and it takes 15 minutes to walk there. Once they were finished I took their bowls and gave them their lunches. “Have a good day,” I kissed them both on the cheek as they walked out of the door.
“Urgh, I hate school.” Adam complained, walking down the path. I laughed and shut the door. Lis finished up her breakfast and Harry took her bowl while I adjusted her uniform. I picked up her bag from the doorway and called her over. We got into my car and I drove her to school.
“I’ll pick you up later okay?” I said and she nodded, jumping out of the car and running into the playground. I smiled at her and drove back home. I got back and Harry was sitting on the floor with Lia and Freya.
“Mummy’s back!” Harry said to them in an overly excited voice and I smiled. “Did she get to school okay?”
“Yep, ran into the playground.” I laughed. He laughed along with me and I sat down with him and the twins. We played together for a while and then I went to clean everything up. Once I was finished, we decided to take the twins and Charlie to the park. I put Charlie on his leash and led him out of the door while Harry took the twins’ hands and we walked to the park. The twins ran around with Charlie chasing them and Harry and I sat on a bench watching. My head was resting on his chest and he had his arm around my shoulders. I haven’t seen him enough lately, I’ve been at work so much. I’ve missed him. It’s crazy how you spend so much of your life with someone and then you lose time with them due to a work commitment or something and it’s really hard to deal with. I know I have to do this and my album is nearly written, I just need a couple more tracks for bonus songs and then it’s time to record. I can’t wait to be back in the recording studio not just writing because I love recording. When I recorded on tour it was so hard to do all of the recording and perform shows every few nights too. There were times when we had to set up recording studios on the bus so I could record. That was my 3rd album and it was no way my best. I’m really proud of how this album is going now. It’s my last one so I’ve got to make it good. I’m releasing a final single as a goodbye but that’s it. Then there will be no more music from me unless it’s for charity or an anniversary single. I’m going to miss it but I’m also glad that I’m going to be able to spend more time with my family. For my entire career I have been struggling to fit in family time and work and when this is all over, it will be way easier.
“Mummy! Come play!” Freya called me and I got up going over to her. We played for a while before we had to get back so I could go and pick up Lis. I can’t believe the school day is over already. We walked back home and I got into my car, driving off to get Lis. I got to her school and jumped out of my Range Rover, walking to her classroom. I got there and was one of the first mums. I waited for the bell to go and then her teacher opened the door, calling out whose parents were there. Lis came out and gave me her bag. I took it and held her hand as we walked back to the car. I helped her into it and got in myself. I drove back home and opened the front door. Lis ran in and to Harry who was sitting on his laptop at the kitchen table. I put Lis’ bag down and went into the kitchen.
“Whatcha doing?” I kissed Harry’s head.
“Checking Twitter and stuff,” He replied, scrolling down his mentions. They haven’t really calmed down since One Direction split up; instead it’s just distraught girls tweeting him. “This one says: You and Maddie should do a collab for her new album,” He said.
“I don’t know, we’re thinking about doing a lot of collabs on this album and there’s definitely going to be one with Perrie but I don’t know about any others.” I shrugged, going into the office. I saw some bills on the desk and picked them up looking at them. Electricity, water, Harry’s credit card, my credit card… What? Wow I need to stop going shopping, £50,000 just in a couple of months. I took the bills out into the kitchen and showed Harry.
“Yeah, I saw that.” He said. “You need to stop spending so much. I know you’ve got loads coming in from the new album and some business deals and the tour but really, that is too much to spend in a few months.” He scolded. I nodded and stole his laptop. “Hey!” He groaned as I went onto a different tab.
“I’m doing something practical instead of just looking at social networking sites.” I rolled my eyes at him and went onto the website to check that all the bills had been paid. They had and then I gave Harry his laptop back. I got up and Brooklyn and Adam walked through the door.
“I hate him!” Brooklyn screamed, pointing at Adam before storming upstairs.
“Care to explain?” I asked Adam. He shrugged and walked towards the stairs. “Adam…” I said and he sighed, walking towards me.
“I didn’t do anything; she’s just being a drama queen as usual.” He lied. I can tell when he’s lying, it’s so obvious.
“What did you do?” I continued.
“I told some boy to stay away from her because he was getting really close, I was just protecting her. Turns out he was her crush.” Adam shrugged and walked upstairs.
“Protective brothers suck,” I shook my head.
“How would you know? You don’t have a brother.” Harry reminded me.
“Gemma told me.” I stuck my tongue out and went to check on the twins.
Harry’s P.O.V
I watched as Maddie walked out and then laughed. She does know how to make something funny. I shut my laptop and got up going upstairs to Brooklyn’s room.
“He was just trying to protect you princess,” I said, sitting down on her bed.
“So he said,” She muttered, not looking away from her laptop.
“Brothers are like that; ask you Auntie Gemma, I used to be like that with her. It’s a way of finding out which guys actually like your sister. If they run off and don’t come near you again because your brother warned them off, they just wanted to get into your pants. Quite a few of Gemma’s boyfriends did that but then Ashton came along and he wasn’t scared off. That’s how you know. You should be grateful that Adam saved you.” I told her and she turned around.
“Really?” She asked and I nodded. It is true most of the time, either they wanted to get into their pants or they’re just cowards. She got up from her desk and came over to hug me. “Sorry for shouting at Adam.”
“I think there’s someone next door who would rather hear that honey,” I kissed her forehead and she left her room going into Adam’s. I got up and watched them from the doorway. She apologised and he hugged her. I’m glad they’re close. Gemma and I were always close, we never really fought, we just got on. I think the small age gap between them helps them to get along because there are only a few years between Gemma and I and only a year and a few months between Adam and Brooklyn. I smiled at my eldest children and went downstairs. “They made up.” I told Maddie.
“I knew they would,” She grinned, picking up the toys that the twins have chucked all over the living room. “How’s Niall doing?” She asked. Niall has been at court for the last few days going through a messy divorce with Belle.
“I don’t think it’s going good for him. So far she hasn’t got the house or cars but she has a quarter of the money in their joint bank account and the rest is Niall’s by right because he earned it. She also has to return a few things to him but I think custody of Drew is going her way. He sounded destroyed when I spoke to him last night.” I informed her and she sighed.
“He deserves that child; he has raised Drew pretty much on his own because she was always out. It sucks how the law works in this country.” She replied and I nodded.
