Overworked

Harry’s P.O.V
Maddie left and Brooklyn and Adam went out in the pool. I watched them from the kitchen table. They’re so much happier now that she’s back. They used to be really depressed and missing her all the time but now she’s back and they couldn’t be happier. Yeah, maybe she’s not staying here and I get why but they know she’s back in the state.
After about half an hour of watching Adam and Brooklyn splash around in the pool I went down to check on the twins. They were watching a kids show on TV giggling with each other. I smiled and went into Freya’s room. It was a complete mess so I started to sort it out.

I’m quite proud of the twins’ bedrooms because I decorated them with a bit of help from Perrie and Gemma. Eleanor won’t come anywhere near me since I slapped Maddie because she blames me for her losing her best friend. Hopefully we can sort it out now though. After I had tidied Freya’s room, I went into Amelia’s. Amelia’s was exactly how I left it this morning. She’s the tidy one that puts things away, Freya just leaves them everywhere.

“Harry!” Gemma called.
“Hang on a sec Gem,” I replied and shut the door to Amelia’s room and ran upstairs. “Hey,” I smiled.
“Where’s Mads?” She questioned.
“Her dad wants her to stay with them so she’s just gonna come round here during the day and stuff.” I explained going out into the garden with Gemma following.
“Oh right okay, well we’re going home tomorrow so make sure she comes here to say goodbye to us.”
“I will,” I sat down at the patio table overlooking the pool. “Adam! No.” I shouted as he pushed Brooklyn underwater. He sighed and let her go and then got out of the pool and went inside dripping. “Dry yourself off before you leave the kitchen.” I said and he came back to get his towel. He dried himself and went back in.
“You’re getting pretty good at all this single dad stuff,” Gemma laughed.
“Well I won’t have to be a single dad for much longer. I’ll have Maddie back here soon.” I told her.
“I know you will Harry, just don’t hope for too much too soon.” She said and Melissa came over and hugged Gemma. “Hey, did you see Mummy today?” Gemma asked.
“Yeah! She looks pretty.” Lis replied and Gemma laughed.
“She does doesn’t she?” She said and Lis nodded. They talked for about an hour and then Gemma left to get back to Ashton and Matt at the hotel. I went down to the basement and the twins were fighting over a toy. I went over to them and picked it up putting it on the side so they couldn’t reach it.
“Come on you two, bath time,” I said and led them both into the bathroom. I undressed them and ran their bath. Once I had gotten it to the right temperature, I put them both in and started to wash them. They played with their pink rubber ducks and I laughed as they started splashing each other. I’m surprised with these two really. They don’t get on at all, but when Sam and Kayleigh were little they were joined at the hip. They never left each other whereas these two can’t wait to get away from each other. “Brooklyn?” I called her and she came downstairs.
“Yeah?” She stood in the doorway to the bathroom.
“Can you go and get your sisters’ pyjamas please?” I asked her and she nodded and went into Amelia’s room and then Freya’s before coming back with two sets of pyjamas. “Thank you sweetie, shut the gate on the way upstairs okay?” I said.
“Okay Dad,” she smiled. I got Freya out of the bath first and dried her off and put her into her pyjamas. Then I repeated my actions with Amelia. I left Amelia in the playroom and went into Freya’s room with her. I put her into her bed, tucked her in, shut her blinds and drew her curtains. The room was surrounded with dim pink light and she was snuggled up in bed. I got her dummy and gave it to her and she gladly sucked on it. She went to sleep almost straight away and I shut the gate on her doorway and went to Amelia. I picked her up and took her into her room and put her into her bed. I pulled the curtains shut and the blinds down and tucked her into bed. I gave her her dummy too and she went to sleep. I walked out of her room and shut the gate. I left the monitor in the playroom so I’d be able to hear if either of them woke up and went to the stairs. I turned off the light and went upstairs, shutting the stair gate behind me. We all had dinner and Melissa started doing her homework so I sat and helped her. Brooklyn and Adam ran around in the garden playing football. When Lis was finished with her homework I ran her a bath and she got ready for bed. She came back downstairs after her bath and watched a bit of TV. I went out into the garden and played with Brooklyn and Adam when the intercom buzzed. I ran inside and pressed the speak button.
“Who is it?” I questioned.
“Simon,” they spoke. What’s Simon doing here?
“Okay, come in.” I pressed the open button and called Brooklyn and Adam in from outside, locking the back door. Simon came in and looked at the kids. “Go and play upstairs for a bit guys,” I said and they ran upstairs. “Not you Lis. You go to sleep.” I called after them. I got a groan back and laughed. Why is Simon here? And what’s he got to say that the kids can’t hear?
“Harry, I need to talk to you and get your opinion on something. I don’t think the band is working out as well as it used to be. The sales are going down and yes you still have millions of fans but they’re just not as dedicated anymore. Also, you five haven’t been the same around each other lately. I know you’re still best friends but there has just been a lot of tension between you all considering Maddie leaving.” Simon sat down.
“What are you trying to say?” I sat down opposite him.
“I think it’s time for One Direction to split up.” He sighed. We all knew this day would come. We’ve been together for just under 18 years now.
“What have the lads said?” I questioned.
“They don’t really know what to do. Perrie, Danielle and Eleanor were very supportive of whatever decision Zayn, Liam and Louis made though, I’m sure Maddie will be too.”
“What about Belle?”
“She wasn’t around when I went. Niall said something about her going shopping.”
“When isn’t she going shopping?” I sighed. “But yeah, I don’t mind what happens, we’ve had a good run and I’m sure we’ll stay friends so why does it really matter? If anything it would be an easier life for all of us.” I replied.
“That’s what I thought you would say. You have Maddie to focus on again now. I need to talk to her too. I need to see if she’s willing to come back and make a final album for us and then you’ll all be out of showbiz.” He said.
“She’s staying at her mum and dad’s. I can give you her address if you want to go and see her now. I’m sure she’ll be more than happy to do it.” I told him.
“That would be great, thank you Harry.” He answered and I wrote down Maddie’s address for him. “I’ll go and see her now. And I’ll be in touch with you and the lads about the decision we make for you all.” He stood up.
“Thanks.” I smiled and he left. As I looked around at the mess in the living room and kitchen I sighed and went to get Brooke and Adam and checked that Lis was asleep while I was up there. We went back downstairs and the kids helped me to clean up before going to bed. Once I knew they were all asleep and there was no sound coming from anywhere in the house, I locked the front door and sat down on the sofa. This is my favourite part of the day. When the kids are all tucked up in bed, I can just sit down and relax. It doesn’t matter how stressful my day was, I always get this bit at the end. Being a single dad is one of the most challenging things I’ve had to do. Being torn away from my kids like the blink of an eye when we had the car crash was the worst. Luckily we all got away with cuts and bruises but I don’t know what would have happened if anything worse had happened to me. The kids wouldn’t have had any parents. I get why Maddie left and I really don’t blame her but the fact that she only came back because I was in a car crash doesn’t sit well with me. If I hadn’t have been in that crash, would she ever have come back? Would I have been a single dad for the rest of my life? I wouldn’t have had Maddie and I wouldn’t have seen the point of getting another woman. All I know is, Maddie is in a house not too far from here, in this neighbourhood, with people that adore her. She’s not in another state, she’s here. I also know that if I mess up, she has a house in New York that she can go to and I really don’t want that to happen.
