Overworked

Harry’s P.O.V
2 weeks later
I went downstairs and Maddie was sitting at the dining table in pain. This can’t be happening right now. Just no. “What’s the matter babe?” I walked over to her. She was holding her bump and breathing heavily. Oh god. Not again.
“They’re coming. I know it.” She said faintly. I helped her up and into the car and called the kids down. I can’t believe this is happening again. Maddie cannot go through this again. Why does she always have them prematurely? The kids got into the car and I drove to the hospital.
“This is why I thought we were done with kids.” I sighed helping Maddie inside with the kids trailing after us.
“Why?” She asked.
“Because you always seem to have them early, Adam was the only one that wasn’t. You’re not due for another 6 weeks.” I reminded her.
“Fuck.” She clutched her bump and I had to catch her from falling. Do all women get pain as bad as this? “I know but they’re coming and they’re coming now.” She moaned and we got into the hospital. I went up to the front desk and told them and Maddie was taken into a room. The kids and I had to wait outside so we sat on the blue chairs waiting for any news. I stared at the blank wall for a while before Brooklyn spoke pulling me out of my daze.
“Are the babies going to be okay?”
“Hopefully, but they might not be fully developed yet.” I told her and she looked sad. We could hear Maddie screaming and I desperately wanted to help her.
“I’m not having these fucking babies until Harry is with me!” I heard Maddie shout.
“Mrs Styles, he can’t be with you because you can’t leave 3 children unsupervised in the waiting room. You need to give birth now before they do any damage to your insides.” The doctor told her.
“Not without Harry. I want Harry.” Maddie shouted. The door opened and a doctor walked out.
“You need to calm her down before we have to do a caesarean section. She’s disturbing other patients.” He said.
“She’s in complete agony. She isn’t due for another 6 weeks and you’re making her have twins without me there! No wonder she’s screaming.” I argued and pushed past him walking into the room. “I’m here baby. Come on. You can do this.” I took Maddie’s hand.
“Can you go and supervise them children please Sasha, they can’t be left out there on their own and it’s obvious she won’t listen to us unless he’s here.” The doctor asked the nurse. She nodded and walked outside to sit with the children. Maddie had another contraction and started screaming.
“Sssh, just breathe baby. Breathe.” I squeezed her hand. Seeing her in this much pain hurts me as much as this is hurting her.
“Right, your water hasn’t broken yet so we’re going to wait for a while to see if it does. Your contractions are quite far apart so it looks like you’re going to be in labour for a while yet. Just keep breathing deeply and it should be fine.” The doctor instructed. Maddie nodded and he left the room. “You didn’t need to kick up such a fuss gorgeous. You know I was just outside.” I kissed her and wiped some of her hair back from her forehead.
“I’m not having these babies without you being here.” She said.
“You don’t have to. I’m here now but I’m gonna call Niall to see if he can come and sit with the kids.” I said. She nodded and I left the room. “Is there any chance you can come down to the hospital and watch the kids?” I spoke down the phone to Niall.
“Is Maddie in labour?”
“Yeah, she’s so upset right now. To start with they wouldn’t let me be with her until she started screaming but I need someone to look after the kids.” I told Niall.
“I’ll be there in 10.” He said and hung up. I went back to Maddie and she was screaming in pain.
“Breathe,” I reminded her and she took a deep breath. She shouldn’t have to go through this again. Niall arrived soon after and sat with the kids so Sasha was free to do her job. Maddie’s water broke and her contractions were getting much closer together.
“Fuckkkkkkk!” Maddie shouted.
“Control your language please.” The doctor scolded.
“Really? She’s in labour and you’re asking her to control her language?” I scoffed looking at him.
“Go and sit outside. I’ve had enough of you.” He said to me.
“No!” Maddie grabbed onto my arm.
“Honey, let go.” I said prising her fingers off of me. “You’ll be fine. Be strong for me gorgeous. I love you.” I kissed her forehead and walked out of the room. I sat down and put my head in my hands.
“What’s wrong?” Niall asked. “She has to go through this on her own. He just kicked me out. I hate this.” I replied. We sat and listened to Maddie screaming for me and because of the babies for about an hour. Lis cuddled up to me and we sat for a while before the midwife came out of the room.
“Your wife has had the twins but they are very weak. They can’t support themselves properly yet so they’re going to be put into an incubator. You can see Maddie though but she’s quite tired.” She said. I put my head in my hands again. This is the second time this had happened. Lis was in hospital for a month before she was allowed home. I stood up with the kids and went in to see Maddie. She was crying and I went over to hug her.
“They’ll be okay.” I said.
“They’re so tiny and weak; I shouldn’t be able to have kids.” She cried.
“They’re going to be okay Maddie. They’re little fighters like their mum. They’ll be alright.” I kissed her head. Brooke, Adam and Lis all hugged her and the doctor came back in. He did some tests and after about an hour came back to us again.
“You’re free to go but the twins will need to stay here for the time being.” The doctor said. Maddie just shook her head.
“I’m not leaving them,” She said.
“Then you can go and see them in the baby care unit.” He told her and she got out of bed.
“Take the kids home. I don’t want them seeing this.” She ordered and walked out of the room.
“You can go Niall. Thanks for looking after them.” I said. He hugged Maddie and then left. I followed after Maddie to SCBU with the kids. “They can stay outside. I want to see my babies.” I said and she nodded. We went into the room and the kids sat outside. We went over to the twins and Maddie cried into my chest when she saw how many tubes they had around them.
“I shouldn’t have kids. This happened with Lis and I was stupid enough to have more. I’ve just put two more babies in torture now.” She said and hugged me tight.
“Babe, it’s not your fault. They decide when they want to come and they couldn’t wait to see you. They’re going to fight just like you have over the years don’t worry.” I told her. She nodded and just stared at the babies.
“The kids are going to be hungry. You take them home and I’ll be fine here. I’m not leaving them.” She said and I did as she told me. I walked out of the room and all of the kids stood up. I picked up Lis.
“Come on, Mum says I need to take you home so I’m going to. She’s really upset at the moment.” I told them and they nodded. I could hear them sniffing all the way home. We got back and Louis came outside.
“Please tell me she hasn’t,” he said.
“She has. They’re in a baby care unit and she’s refusing to leave them.” I replied.
“I feel so sorry for her; she shouldn’t have to go through this again. It broke her last time.” He sighed.
“I know. That’s why I didn’t think she’d want more kids but she’s had them now, there is no going back.” I got the kids out of the car and they went inside.
“How are they?” Louis looked at them.
“Upset. They’re going to be annoyed that Maddie is always at the hospital too but it’s what she’s got to do. She can’t leave them.” I said and he nodded.
“Well I hope you’re all okay, I’ll see you soon.” He hugged me and went back inside. I went into the house and shut the door. I made the kids some dinner but they didn’t eat it, instead they just stared at the TV not really watching it. After about an hour, I took Lis up to bed.
“Come on, bath time.” I carried her into the bathroom.
“No. Mummy baths me.” She crossed her arms and pouted. I sighed and took her into her room. I got her into her pyjamas and then she just went to sleep. I went back downstairs and Brooke and Adam sat next to me. I hugged them and we stayed like that for ages and then they went up to bed with me following soon after.
