Life is Hard.
Announcement
We rushed to English class as the bell rang again. We were already late for English class and Mrs. Brooks has already entered the class. She hates late comers, she'll embarrass you in front of the whole class with just her questionings.
"Layla and Charlotte, why are you late? Do you want to share your story with the other students ?" Mrs. Brooks said with a grin on her face. I knew she was evil. Urgh..
"We're sorry Mrs. Brooks, we had English lesson before this and Mr. Alex needed some help to shift some boxes and asked if we can help." Layla spoke up for the both of us.
"Why couldn't he have shift them himself ?" The whole class was so quiet you could hear a pin drop. Mrs. Brooks' arms were crossed infront of her chest, the grin still there on her face.
"There were lots of boxes there, Mrs. Brooks. He said that he needed to shift it to the music room before the next period and there were too much for him to handle alone." Layla answered politely again, standing up for the both of us.
"Why did he need it in the music room so urgen-" Mrs. Brooks didn't get to finish her sentence before I started talking. This woman in seriously annoying and irritating, I'm up to my limit with all her bullshit question.
"FIY, we aren't some nosy girls who go round asking people what the boxes are for and why they are needed. Mr. Alex asked if we could help and we just said yes to be polite. What would you want me to say, "No, I do not want to help you carry all this boxes, I have English class."? If the students does that, the teachers complain that we are rude. On the other hand, when we help out and reached the next class late we get question about everything." I response. Mrs. Brooks was shocked at my comeback. Everyone in class started clapping after I finished my little speech. Mrs. Brooks shocked expression slowly changed into a furious one.
"One more word and I'm sending you to the principal office. Get to your seats." I was tempted to say something to piss her off but Layla knew how I would react and just dragged me to our seats before I could response. I told you it won't end pretty, didn't I ?
Suddenly, the school speakers were turned on in the middle of the lesson. The principals voice erupted from the speakers.
"Dear fellow students, the school is getting involved in a foreign exchange program this year. In a few weeks, five lucky students will be chosen to travel to England for the program. They will be going to a town called Holmes Chapel. A form will be put up during recess on the notice board and if you are interested, sign yourself up today!" and with that Mr. George ended the announcement.
During recess, the notice board was crowded with tons of student shoving their way through to get their name on the sign up sheet. I didn't bother writing my name down, already annoyed looking at the crowd of people.
It was the last class of the day, Science. We were doing an experiment on some microorganism stuff. I just got bored and requested for the bathroom pass. I walked down the quiet and empty hallway towards the toilet. The curiosity got the best of me, seconds later, I found myself at the notice board. I flipped through the pages of scribbled names, I reached the last page and there were only three columns left for three names. Not knowing what I was doing, I grab the pen placed next to the sign up sheet and wrote Layla's and my name on it. I figured that with all of our family problems, it's hard for us to go overseas. I've never been out of Los Angeles and I figured that this will be the only chance I could get, a fully paid expense trip to England!
I told Layla about it when I got back to class. She was shock at what I did, her mouth gaping.
"You better close your pretty mouth of yours before a fly decides that it's going to be its new home," I said, chuckling. She instantly closed her mouth.
"See it as a big opportunity for us if we get pick you know. The school is paying for the air tickets and everything. It's the only way we can get exposed to other countries. But if you really don't want it I can cut your name of the sign up sheet."
She shook her head, telling me to not cut her name out. She started absorbing in what I just said and thought that it was correct. A small smile crept onto her face as I gave her a reassuring smile.
