Chapter 2

“Lillith, I made you some coffee.” I approached the vintage, brown table she was sitting at and maneuvered the mugs down onto the surface. She turned up her head and looked at me as I sat down in front of her.
The apartment seemed cold and dark due to the closed and curtained windows and I could barely see, but the small amount of lighting made the place much more serene and peaceful and by the look on Lillith’s face, she really needed that

“Gee, sis, thanks, you didn’t have to. Really.” I saw a bit of guilt flash in her eyes. Either that, or she was very tired. Lately, she’s always ‘very tired’, though I don’t know why exactly. It might be because she just got the team and I from being completely stomped on, but then again, she doesn’t do that everyday.

She took a small, scared, sip of her black coffee and her pale face stayed the same, not lighting up a bit.

“Don’t worry,” I comforted her, “It’s not hot. I made sure to cool it down a bit for you. I know how much you hate having to wait to drink your coffee just because it burns your tongue.
She gave me a small smile in appreciation, but I could tell it was forced. I held her hand tight and coaxed her, “I’m a detective, Lil. I can tell when something’s bothering you. Seriously, what’s wrong?”

She took a deep breath and I could see the flicker of emotions in her blue eyes, debating whether or not to tell me.

Finally, she exhaled and stated, “Well, I don’t know how to tell you this and believe me, I tried. Many times. But it was just so hard, and – ” she was cut off by my business telephone’s vibration.

I gave her hand a small squeeze careful not to hurt her frail body that looked as if were to pass out any second now. In any other circumstances, I would throw my phone against the wall so it could shut up and let Lillith talk, but it was my business telephone, which means this is an emergency.

“We’ll continue this later, alright?” she nodded, though I know we probably wouldn’t since it took her so much courage to just say that little.

I stood up while grabbing my phone after giving her one last glance and I went to my bedroom so I could talk on the phone in private.

“Hello?” I asked, knowing exactly who it was.

“We need you at HQ in 20. Cross and Hawk are already here. Just Ggther the others and get over here, ASAP.”

It was probably something on the current case. We hadn’t gotten a chance to look at the crime scene yet. Course. Ethan, Aiden and I were there this morning, but that was only to have a few words with the police while doctors and such took care of the bodies and brought them to the morgue. We would probably be going tonight or tomorrow morning to officially look at crime scene and we would have pictures of the bodies taken by the police, so we could run smoothly with the usual plan. Right now, we only knew what the police have told us.

I approached the large table everyone was sitting at, with Lucifer, Raven, and Seth following right behind me. We all pulled our chairs out and sat down in our usual places, with me in-between Ethan and Aiden and the other three facing us on the other side of the table. Both our team’s leaders sat at the front and back of the table, both their hands folded, making them look very professional. Oleander Davis, or Lea for short, is the leader of Team 00, which consists of me – Severyn Spade – Ethan Cross and Aiden Hawk. The other leader was D. He lead Team 01, which consists of Raven and Lucifer Saden (the twin sons of Walden Saden aka the head of Secret Service) Seth Adams, whose brother Cain works at the Pentagon, and Alcaeus otherwise known as Al. He was the oldest (besides of course for Lea and D), the others were in their late teens (18-20ish) and I was the youngest at 17. Team 00 and Team 01 did practically every case with each other. We used to be one team but suddenly we split up because of something D did that angered Lea (I have no idea what he did, and I would investigate, but I myself am a bit suspicious of D for some reason).

I blew some of my stray jet lack hair out of my face and spoke in a formal manner, “I couldn’t get a hold of AL.”

D nodded as his dry voice filled the room, “I had thought so,”

Lea perked up, “Why/ Is something wrong with him?” As much as she may hate D, she doesn’t let it interfere with her work.

Seth spoke up, “The last anyone’s seen of him was a week ago. He had bags under his eyes and kept biting the inside of his cheek. His arms also seemed itchy. He couldn’t sit still for a second.”

“That’s odd.” Lea worried.

“I’ll see what I can find out. I’ll try calling him later again perhaps. Now, why were we called here so urgently?” I changed the subject. Let’s just say Al and I weren’t really the best of friend this month.

“Oh, right! How is the investigation going so far?” Lea asked.

Ethan quickly sat up properly before replying, “Well, Aiden, Severyn, and I visited the place this morning but they said we weren’t allowed to enter until they took the bodies to the morgue. They took pictures of the bodies though so hopefully we will all be able to go again tonight since the stupid paps probably won’t be up this late.”

Aiden nodded his head in agreement as everyone listened intently.

D chuckled slightly, “What do you expect? You solve this case and it’ll be your 1000th case in just a year! I’m very proud of all of you. However, we need to clear things up with the public so no one starts to panic. We still don’t know anything at all. Do you think you can all be able to go tonight?”

We all nodded and I couldn’t help but slightly smile. There’s just something about someone complimenting for all your hard work you do to help others.

The others were waiting for me in the car and Lea had already gone to do her own thing, leaving me to pack up all the documents and items (such as the keys so we could enter the apartment) all alone, with D.

Not a moment too soon, I was ready to go before D opened his mouth and stopped me, “Be careful Severyn. I have a gut feeling about Al and your sister Lillith. I just don’t know what it is yet.”

I lightly kicked an emptybag of chips on the ground awayonto another part of the blood stained carpet with my black boot and gave out a sigh, “Aright, this is ridiculous,”

The apartment didn’t have much in it, making us think it was probably a second property one of the victims owned. There were two – a young girl and a male in his late 20s.

Lucifer ran his long and slender fingers through his light mint green hair stressfully as his other hand rested in his pocket and he let out an incredulous chuckle, “It’s like the un-sub came, murdered them, and left without a single trace,”

“It’s like a hit and run,” Raven added, shaking his ruffled lack hair as he scratched behind his pierced right ear.

“Yeah, except this isn’t just a hit. It’s severe overkill,” Ethan whispered quietly.

I observed the photos of the bodies again. On the ground lay a man and a young girl who couldn’t possibly be older then 18. They were both stabbed several times and there was no trace of a fingerprint or footprints anywhere, which was miraculous considering the massive amount of blood covering the floor and bodies. They had so many stabs that you couldn’t tell what height the un-sub was, or if it was even one un-sub or a few, we didn’t know, but we were thinking it was just one.

I tsked, “How did the un-sub manage to cover all it’s tracks? That’s nearly impossible.”

“Yeah, nearly,” seth rolled his eyes. He would always get impatient when we had no leads, meaning he didn’t really get impatient much considering we always had leads.

Ethan flailed his arms, “Ok, so, what do we have? Let’s just calmly analyze this.”

“Serial killer?” Lucifer tossed an idea.

I shook my head, still looking at the photos, “NO. Serial killer is three or more. This is only two, and at the same apartment at that.”

“Mass murder?” Raven suggested.

“Did you not just hear her? It’s only two people” Seth argued.

“There’s no M.O either,” Aiden said.

“Unless you consider overkill an M.O.” Ethan scoffed.

“You can’t really tell the M.O from just two murders, though. It has to be a serial killer so we can know for certain, and we don’t know if it is yet. Maybe the un-sub just wanted to murder these
two people and that’s it.”

“But why them?” Aiden thought outloud.

I started throwing around ideas.

“Armed robbery gone wrong? Revenge? Psychotic break? Victim reminded the un-sub of something from it’s probably bad, past? Maybe they crossed paths before, or perhaps they owe the un-sub something.”

Ethan drooped, “Yeah, but the thing is, anyone of those could be true. What would the un-subs motive be?? And how do the victims even know each other?”

“Well, we need a profile for the motive, and we can’t have a profile with just one overall murder. As for the relationship between the victims, the morgue will soon have their names and we can investigate form there.”

“But what if this is just a single murder? How will we make a profile then? “ Lucifer countered.

“We don’t even know if it was just one un-sub. We don’t have enough information. Seth complained.

Ethan widened his eyes, “What’s that supposed to mean?”

“We have to search for old cases like this one to check and see if this is a serial killer. We’ll wait and see what the morgue says about the victims. If we don’t end up with anything important, then we have to wait and see if there will be another crime like this in the next month or so. If not, then it’s probably not a serial killer and the case goes cold,” I said defeatedly.
