101 Reasons To Hate Butterflies
Chapter 7
Daniel' POV:
We arrived at our destination and had to wait to be seated.
Laura didn't seem to mind though.
"So when are you gonna see Jacob?"
"We don't really hangout much anymore, remember sweetie? I think I said that..."
"But I like him!"
"Okay! okay. Maybe I can see if he can drop by for you. To say happy birthday."
She smiled and giggled.
"Sir?"
I looked up.
"Your table is ready."
We ate.
And when it was over, we got back in the car and buckled up.
We were at our second stop light when Laura poked my shoulder and made me look over in her direction.
"Daniel look!"
She stuck her fingers in her face and put her tongue out.
"Oh. Wow! Laura that's um, beautiful."
I blinked, and when I opened my eyes I started seeing things.
I saw some of my old Boy Scout camping trips, then I saw my third place science experiment. After that I witnessed myself get my first kiss and then I saw my water polo team.
It didn't take long to see Lizzy. Or any of my other friends, for that matter. Bowling, late night adventures and movie dates.
I didn't know why I was seeing these things, but then suddenly I saw nothing.
Abby's POV:
My walks became more of a common habit.
Some days I would find myself in the incubator type room. I would see that new father who I met in the elevator and his beautiful...son, it looked like.
Other times I would find myself listening to more stories from Mr. O'Connel.
He was such an interesting man and his stories fascinated me. He had so much to tell and I could listen for hours.
But sadly today that wasn't the case.
I wanted to get home.
The doctors kept saying that I could go home soon, an that I could go visit soon.
I had been improving more and more and it was only going to be a few days now until I was conscience again.
It was such good news but at the same time it would take weeks until I could actually walk around like I had been doing.
Weeks until I could talk proper, too.
I wouldn't remember any of the times when my friends visit or any of their stories.
And no more Mr, O'Connel.
I sighed.
Maybe there was a way I could trigger my memory...
...but if there was I didn't know it.
All I could do was wait.
But I was sidetracked and didn't notice the rush of people and staff that rushed by my door. When the commotion had settled, I ran out my door in a desperate attempt to catch up to them only to find them turning the corner.
I sped up and my frame of reference lessened. Eventually, I got to the corner and watched as the busy rush ran into the emergency room. I walked into the room and was awestruck to see a familiar face.
Daniel? Holy...shit.
I peered over the staff who were attending him, hooking him up to everything in sight.
"Have they mumbled what happened to me, yet?"
I didn't respond.
"Hello...? Alison, right?"
"Daniel? Wh- how...?"
"Isn't this how it works? I mean, I used to read books when I was little about out-of-body experiences. I just always figured that was how it works." Daniel said..
"Well, I never read any books. I had to find out the surprising way."
We both sighed.
"I hope we can put our differences aside. I know that we, we'll, don't talk much at school, but can you show me around?"
"Whatever sure."
I offered my hand. "Here, c'mon lets go."
He took my hand as I took him and walked him out his room.
"Unless you want to be a doctor, maybe, then you don't wanna watch them do all that to you. I mean trust me, it gets boring and confusing an honestly there are so many other things way more interesting."
"Like what? Death? Babies?"
"If you look at it that way."
We walked around the bottom floor and talked. I told him of all the stories I witnessed. Some tragedies, others miracles. The only thing that never seemed to change was the constant smell of hospital. We keep talking for a while. Making rounds about the hospital.
Suddenly, Daniel stopped.
His eyes shot open and he mumbled "Laura...?"
I followed him as he ran up to the elevator and pressed the button rapidly.
