THE MURDERER'S LETTER
Chapter 4
I felt a hand lightly graze my shoulder blade and then start shaking me, trying to wake me without startling me. There was no need. I was already awake. Who could sleep after a night like that? Not toe mention I was sleeping on the ground…
“Baby.” Harry whispered, his breath warming the hair around my ear, “Charlie, we have to keep moving.”
I stretched and rubbed my eye as I looked into his emerald ones. “Okay.”
He stood up and offered me his outstretched hand that I took gratefully.
“Okay so here’s the plan. We have to find some different clothes and then go to the shop that our clothes were donated to. Once we find my jacket we get the letter,” He paused, “Maybe even the jacket I don’t know. Better be safe than sorry. Then we bring it back to the station and give it to the detectives.”
I nodded, “Whatever you say chief.” He smiled at me as he poked my nose with his index finger and then went to check around the edge of the bridge.
He motioned for me to follow and I did so without question. Part of me was relieved that Harry was taking the initiative to get us out of this mess and that he had the brains to devise a plan, but the other part of me was becoming uneasy of how easily he thought of the next step. Is he familiar with this whole process meaning he’s been in a similar situation and he’s just never told me before?
We walked along the bridge, which lead directly into the town. We ducked in a small ally when a police car started to roll past us. We couldn’t risk being seen by anyone and these uniforms weren’t doing a lot of good.
“Hah!” Harry hissed. “The bastards.”
“What do you mean?”
“Not important. Here.” He said and tossed me a random pink short sleeve t-shirt and a pair of yoga pants.
“Uh—“
“I just found these here.” He said gesturing to the clothesline that was hung connecting the two buildings that formed the ally we were in.
“Should we really just take—“
“Charlie, we don’t have any other choice.” He snapped and I immediately shut my mouth and began to peel off the guard’s uniform. I was incredibly happy to get the scratchy material off of me and I was grateful that we found clean clothes to wear and not some random shirt in the trash.
After we were done changing into the new clothes, Harry peered around the building and then motioned for me to follow again. We walked in silence and we only saw a few police cars but they were easy to dodge.
I let my mind wander back to when my life was normal and baffled myself when I realized that only a couple weeks ago my life had been completely normal and now I’m walking in a town with some random person’s clothes on hiding from police cars to keep me safe, and trying to find the evidence we need to prove our innocence…what…
There’s also a thing or two I’ve learned about justice while this whole fiasco has been happening to us: Justice doesn’t mean the bad guy is punished, it means that someone has to pay for the crime regardless if they actually did it or not….Yeah okay…
“C’mon this is it.” Harry hissed and grabbed my wrist to drag me inside a small divvy looking store. We looked around at all of the clothes racks and my mouth dropped open. This place was WAY bigger than it looked on the outside…This is gonna take forever.
“I’ll go over here. You go over there.” I said softly.
“Remember, it was my brown leather jacket.” He said.
I nodded and we walked to opposite sides of the store and began searching for Harry’s jacket. A half an hour had gone by and I had only covered 5 racks. This is ridiculous…
I walked over to Harry after I had checked another ten racks. “Harry, it’s not here.”
“I know, I know… Hold on let’s ask the lady at the front desk.” He walked up to the counter and I could see their mouths moving but I couldn’t understand what they were saying.
I put my fingers to my temple trying desperately to relieve the pressure that had grown there to make my head throb. Harry walked back over to me after a few minutes.
“She remembers it…”
“And?”
“It’s gone already… They already sold it…”
My eyes grew wide, “They’re SOLD it already?! Who the hell did they sell it to?”
“She said that she sold it to an older man this morning…He said he was going to send it to his nephew for his birthday…”
“Okay great we can just go there and get it from him. We don’t even need to get the jacket. Let’s just get the note.”
“Charlie, his nephew lives in Italy…”
