Shattered Walls

Once again, I was at Zayn's house to work on our project. I had promised myself I wouldn't say anything rude, no matter what he said.

He was still a jerk, though.

I was slumped on his black bean chair, and he was lying down on his bed. I was rereading the directions, checking to make sure we had everything. The only thing we were missing was the screwdriver.

My phone suddenly buzzed. I looked down to see who had texted me, and gasped.

Zayn looked up.

"Who is it?" He asked.

It was Jeff. Jeff Wilkerson. Jeff had been the absolute love of my life for as long as I can remember.

All he had done was texted me a question about the homework, but still. I mean, come on.

Suddenly, my phone was snatched out of my hand. I cried out in protest.

Zayn was holding my phone. He looked down at it, and his gaze automatically darkened.

"Is this Jeff Wilkerson?" He asked bitterly.

"Yeah.. why?" I asked.

"Do me a huge favor. Don't go near that guy. He's a douche."

I contemplated this. I really didn't want to get into another fight. Plus, Zayn obviously didn't know anything about Jeff. They never hung out. Jeff was absolutely perfect, and Zayn was...well... Zayn. On the other hand, some really needed to bring Zayn down a peg. He thought he knew everything about everyone.

I decided to go with the previous option, so I nodded in consent.

"Okay," I agreed.

Silence.

"Do you have a screwdriver?" I asked, to break the awkward moment.

"Yeah. I'll go grab it." He stood up slowly and lazily, and left the room.

I was surprised. I expected he would make me get it.

I thought about how Zayn acted with his friends. He had friends, so he had to act civil around some of them, at least. I though about what it would be like for Zayn to be my friend. I shuddered.

A loud vibrating noise snapped me back to reality. I turned around, looking for the source.

It was Zayn's phone. I walked over to his desk to turn it off. I picked it up, then stopped. What secrets could someone as mysterious as Zayn possibly be hiding? Suddenly, I had to know.

I opened up his messaging app. His latest text was with his mom. I saw another one with Jake, his closest friend, and I clicked on it. I scrolled up to find something juicy.

"Hey man. You ok?" This was a text from Jake.

"Yeah, I'll be fine."

I wondered what had happened. Had they had a fight? It didn't seem likely. Maybe-

"Having fun?"

I jumped and dropped the phone at the same time.

Crap. Crap. Crap. Crap.

"It was vibrating, so I went to turn it off, and-"

"And you accidentally opened up the messaging app, found my conversation with Jake, and scrolled up to the middle of it?" He asked with an an obvious smirk.

"Um. Yes?"

He stalked over and snatched it away from me. He held up the screwdriver in his other hand.

"Obviously I can't trust you, huh?" He muttered.

"Hey. I happen to be the most trustworthy person I know. And before you say my judgement doesn't count, you're wrong. Plus, who knows what secrets you could have? You could be hiding a dead body, for all I know."

His expression changed. His eyes narrowed, and his mouth set in a straight line.

"Get out." He said quietly.

"What?" I asked in disbelief.

"You heard me. Get out."

"I literally just got here. I really don't understand what the big deal is. All I did was look at your phone. Here, you can look at mine if-"

"Get the hell out of my house right now."

I grabbed my bag, and hurried out. I made sure to slam the door.

I couldn't believe this had happened again.

Well, if he was going to act like a jerk, then so was I.
