Shattered Walls

I was actually early to Chemistry. I took my seat in the back of the room, next to Jordan, a cheerleader who showed more skin then clothes (don't ask me how she's in AP Chemistry), and Chris, one of the biggest players in the school. I was starting to wonder if this was actually an AP class.
Five minutes later, Mrs. Williams walked in, perfectly punctual as always. She smiled brightly.
"Hi, kids. How was your weekend?"
"Good..." We all mumbled, still barely awake.

"We're going to do something a little different today. Instead of our normal notes, we're going to do a project! The project will be in pairs..."

The class brightened up considerably. Projects are always more fun when you're working with a friend.

"...which I will be assigning."

A loud cry echoed through the classroom. Everyone else turned to the front to see who it was, but I didn't have to. I already knew.

Zayn Malik. Otherwise known as the school's resident bad boy.

"Come on, Mrs. W! We won't screw it up this time."

The class snickered. Last time Zayn had brought a project he had worked on with a friend to school, we ended up being evacuated.

Mrs. Williams ignored him, as usual.

The class slumped back down again, disappointed Zayn hadn't convinced her. Personally, I couldn't care less, as long as I didn't get someone too nerdy, or scary. I didn't have any friends in this class. My only friend didn't even go to this school.

"Chris, you will be working with Jason."

They high fived. That was one project that was not going to get done.

"Jordan, you'll be working with Sam."

She groaned. Sam had a lisp that was almost impossible to understand, and a major drooling problem. I snorted. It served her right.

"Will, you'll be working with Jack."

She went around listing people until she got to me.

"Alex, you'll be working with..."

And of course, it was just my luck. Zayn was the only one left.

But maybe I wouldn't have to work with him. Maybe Mrs. Williams would let me work alone. Maybe-

"Zayn."
