BROKEN
Chapter 9- Promise?
Alexandra POV:
Removing the wrapper, I broke off a tiny piece of my soft muffin before placing it in my dry mouth. Swallowing the piece entirely, I cleared my throat.
“What do you mean by story?” I asked while raising an eyebrow towards Liam, who was now sitting across from me.
After he finished wiping his mouth with a silky napkin, he soon replied. “Well there must be a story behind all of this.”
“What if there wasn’t?”
“But there is,” he stated matter-of-factly.
Knowing that I couldn’t lie my way out of this situation, I weighed the advantages and disadvantages between my only two options which were:
A) Just tell him the truth or….
B) Run the fuck out the door and never turn back
I still hadn’t decided nor said anything to him and I guess he realized how speechless I actually was.
“Look Alexandra, I promise that whatever is wrong, I’m not here to judge. I’m simply here to listen.”
With that being said, I had taken a sip out of my latte that had cooled down. Unsure how this conversation would end, I took a deep breath and told my tale.
“Where shall I begin?”
“From the start.”
The problem was, there was no definite “start” and I sure as hell wasn’t going to tell this boy (who I have only known for about 24 hours) my whole life story.
Unable to manage actual words to say, I mumbled, “Ummm..this is a lot harder than I expected…”
Looking back at him, Liam was nodding in understanding until a grin sprawled across his face.
“I have an idea.”
“and what would that be?”
“I get to ask you five questions and you have to answer them all honestly. That’s it.”
Hmmm. That idea doesn’t sound half bad.
“ Fine. But..” I trailed off as I pointed my finger towards him, “ then we will never discuss this subject again.”
“Never again,” he declared.
“Promise?”
“I promise.”
After our pinkies intertwined, Liam leaned over across the table as he rested his head in the palm of his hands. I could feel his eyes burning into mine.
“Question number one. Why were you in the park in the first place?”
Responding rather quickly I said, “Because I had nowhere else to go.”
Shaking his head at my response he retorted with, “ You have to be HONEST remember?!”
“I am being honest though…”
“Your answer needs to be a little more in depth than that!”
Sighing in defeat, there was a long pause. “ I thought I was just gonna take a nap under that tree, but that obviously wasn’t the case. I fell asleep and had nowhere else to go because I left my apartment.”
I had been staring at my lap the entire time I spoke. So, when I finally had the courage to lift my head up to face him…he just casually went on to question number two.
I could already sense that he was a really good listener.
“Wiy diud you leaffe your apartgjment?”
Liam was stuffing his mouth with food, so I could barely comprehend what he was trying to ask. He spoke muffled and almost incoherent, but somehow I knew exactly what he wanted to know. I saw it coming.
“ Because um…I left my boyfriend. We uh..got in a fight.”
Once I finally managed to let those stinging words fall from my lips, his eyes widened twice its original size. He looked like he had just seen a ghost. In all honesty, it even frightened me a bit.
Waving my hands infront of his face, he snapped out of his trance. Out of nowhere, he pushed a stray piece of my knotty hair away and behind my ear. He then placed his hand on top of mine, squeezing it rather tightly.
“Was he the person who hurt you?” he asked in a sweet, mellow tone while adding in, “ I mean, it’s just you kept screaming in your sleep that someone was hurting you. So, I just…uh assumed.”
I wanted to just shout ‘ YES HE DID!’ but I didn’t have the strength nor willpower. I opened my mouth in attempt to answer, but nothing would spill out. I could only attain to shake my head up and down.
It’s crazy how those small words he said can affect me so badly. I guess it’s the fact that I just wasn’t used to talking about this.
Without realizing, a single tear fell from my right eye. Stop it. Don’t cry.
Straightaway, Liam stood and picked his chair up to place it next to mine. Sitting back down, he wrapped his comforting arms around me.
I refused to let myself breakdown in an emotional mess again.
Next, he grabbed a napkin and began wiping the tears that had already fallen, as well as my smudged makeup.
Shit. Not my makeup.
Before I could let myself prevent him, he saw everything. I could instantly tell by the repugnance expression on his face. I knew exactly what he was gazing at.
Oh god. This is not good.
I ripped the napkin out of his hold and then nuzzled my face inside my sweatshirt. Nobody has ever seen me without concealer on.
Using his soft hands, he gripped my chin and motioned for me to face him. Reluctantly, I did.
Liam didn’t say anything, he remained observing my beaten up, broken appearance. The burns, the scars, the black eye….all of it. I watched as he took it all in, until he finally broke the silence.
“Oh my god.”
“I didn’t want you to see this.”
“What? Why not?”
“Because its disgusting. I mean come on, look at me Liam.”
“Don’t say that. Al, you’re beautiful.”
“I don’t need your pity okay? I know that I’m not and I’ve accepted that. Can we just drop this conversation altogether?”
“Fine but…I still have two questions left and I’m saving them for later.”
“Kay, fine.”
“You’re not going back to that bastards flat or sleeping in the park tonight either. You’re coming back to the hotel with me” he said. Afterwards, he kissed me on the forehead for a split second before pulling away.
“Is that an order or a request?” I joked trying to lighten up the mood. I could tell this was hard on him. Of course, this was hard on me too but I could sense how overwrought he really was. In a way, I felt undeniably bad for him. He now has to deal with being with me for the rest of the day. Ouch that sucks.
“HA HA very funny,” Liam snickered sarcastically before he continued. “You’re coming whether you like it or not” he teased while passing a subtle wink.
“Alright just let me go to the restroom.”
“Alright don’t be too long” he chuckled. Secretly, I could see the fakeness behind that smile. God dammit. This really isn’t his problem to get upset over….
I hopped off his lap, still unsure how I ended up sitting on it and scurried over to the back. Opening the door with the LADIES sign written above, I rushed over to the counter to see what damage he had seen.
After nearly throwing up from looking at myself in the mirror too long, I kneeled down to my bag. Searching through my stuffed suitcase, I discovered my cosmetic purse. Throwing on various cover ups and dabbing on eye shadow, I was ready to head out of the café with my new friend. Well atleast I think we’re friends. Right?
Speaking of friends, does this mean I get to see that guy Niall again?
