Can't Remember to Forget You

Chapter 4

Of course the school day went by faster than normal today. Usually that would be fine by me, but not today, when I’m dreading what’s coming after school… Harry and I’s ‘bonding’ session that my dad is forcing us to have. At first I actually thought it would be good to get to know him, but the more I think about it, he’s just going to be his stubborn, asshole self the whole time. I wonder what we’re even going to do… it’s not like we share any interests.

After school, I went to change into some denim shorts and a tank top after making the terrible decision to wear jeans to school on this hot day. Maybe Harry and I can get some frozen yogurt to cool off. Once I changed, I grabbed my purse from where I dropped it on the bed and walked across the hall to Harry’s room. Might as well get this over with.

“Are you almost read—“ Whoops.

I walk in on Harry still getting dressed after his shower. He’s not naked, but close enough with only his boxers on.

“Yeah just give me a minute.” He doesn’t even care that I’m here… watching him get dressed. “And if I were you, I’d put some jeans on.” He tells me as I begin to walk out.

“Uh… you do realize it’s like 90° out?”

“Yes, but trust me, you don’t want to wear those"—he points to my short shorts—“things while you’re on a motorcycle. Bad idea.”

“We are not taking that thing.” He’s crazy if he thinks I’m getting on one of those things, let alone with him.

“And how do you suppose we get to where we’re going then?”

“We’ll take my car.” Okay, for once I’m thankful for that ridiculous gift Dad gave me the other day.

Harry rolls his eyes in defeat, but I can tell he doesn’t want to argue it. Wise man. “Whatever,”

“Great, I’ll meet you outside in five.”

“Yeah.”

I leave him to get ready in his room and take a minute to breathe. Shit, he’s hot.

“Are you finally ready?” I sigh when he finally joins me in my car fifteen minutes after he said he would.

“I had to call someone.” He explains without an apology. Should’ve expected that.

I take a deep breath, silently praying that this night won’t be a complete disaster, and start the car. I have no idea where we’re going, but I begin driving away from the house before I change my mind about this. I’m doing this for Anne—I keep reminding myself.

“So this is the car he got you?” Harry laughs and plays with all of the buttons on the dashboard. “Damn, if I were you, I would’ve moved in with him a long time ago.”

“I didn’t move in with him because he has money.” I snap at him. He’s this close to hitting a nerve, and I’m really not in the mood for fighting with him… but then again, I never am.

“Just sayin’” He puts his hands up as if he’s surrendering.

“Okay where do you want to go? I’ll drop you off and then go to Starbucks or something. We can just tell my dad we actually bonded.” I've changed my mind, I'd rather skip this little hang out sesh.

“Oh no, no way. You’re not getting out of this.” Harry shakes his finger in front of my face and I slap it away. He’s in a playful mood, and I hope he remains this way the rest of the night.

“So you’re saying you actually want to? I’m giving you an out…”

“I know where we can go.” He ignores my question. “Drive to the pier.”

“I don’t have my swimsuit, why are we going to the beach?”

“We’re not swimming, Chloe. Just drive.”

I decide not to argue and follow his instructions. It only takes a few minutes to finally get there, but it feels like hours with the silence in the car.

Once we get there, Harry doesn’t say anything, he just gets out of the car and begins walking toward the beach. It’s pretty crowded because of the warm weather, but if we’re not going in the ocean, then I have no clue what he has in mind.

“Where are we going?” I finally ask and try to keep up with him. “Harry you’re being annoying again.”

He looks back at me as he continues to walk and just laughs.

I run to catch up with him when we make it far enough away from the people at the pier, and there’s no one in sight. “Harry, what the hell are we doing?”

“Relax, Chloe. We’re just hanging out with my friends.”

That’s when I notice a group of people; four guys and one girl, sitting on the sand.

“Guys, this is Chloe, Chloe this is Zayn, his girlfriend Perrie, Liam, Louis, and Niall.” Harry introduces us all haphazardly before sitting down next to the blonde one.

They all wave at me, but I still feel uncomfortable as ever. What are we supposed to do here?

“Are you gonna sit?” Harry pulls me from my thoughts and all I do is nod and sit across from him on the sand.

“God that must suck living with Harry,” the only girl says with a laugh and Harry sneers at her.

“You couldn’t imagine…” I joke at the purple and blonde-haired girl… Perrie I think her name was.

“Shut the fuck up, if it sucks for anyone, it’s me.” Harry cuts in. I would get mad at him, but I feel like that’s not a good idea with an audience.

“Hand me that Lou.” Harry holds out his hand to one of the guys and I finally realize what they’re doing so far away from everyone at the pier.

Harry takes a hit from the joint that his friend hands him and blows the smoke into the sky. He takes another pull before holding it out to me, and I immediately shake my head, only to earn a laugh from everyone.

“Not a pot-head like your bro?” The blonde one laughs.

“He is not my brother, and no, I do not smoke weed.” I tell him and they all laugh again.

“I think you should.” Harry says on a laugh when I shake my head. “Yeah, you definitely should. Either that, or loosen up. You’re so damn bitchy all the time.”

“Be nice, Harry.” Perrie defends me. I’ve decided I like her.

“Whatever. Just take one hit, Chloe.” Harry holds the joint in front of my face and I shake my head again. There’s no way I’m smoking weed. This is not my thing. “Quit being such a pussy! C’mon Chlo, we’re supposed to be bonding!”

“Fine!” I huff and take the rolled up paper from his hand. God, he really knows how to push me.

I have no idea what to do, but I don’t want to give him the satisfaction of telling him that, so I bring the joint to my mouth and inhale. As soon as I inhale, I panic as I breathe in the smoke and cough.

“It’s fine, it’s hard to get used to.” Perrie smiles and hands me her water bottle.

“Thanks.” I smile appreciatively and take a drink to soothe my throat. “That is definitely not water.” My face twists in disgust as the liquid burns down my throat and I almost gag.

“Nope,” Perrie laughs. “Sorry, I forgot to mention it was Svedka.”

I laugh uneasily before handing her back the bottle. I hardly ever got drunk on the weekends back in Phoenix, and now I’m about to be drunk and high on a Tuesday night. What’s gotten into me?

Harry’s POV

After I finally got that girl to take a hit, Chloe actually loosened up and even asked for another. There’s no doubt she’s a lightweight, she’s already tipsy on that one swig of vodka Perrie gave her, but I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t entertaining as hell. She’s actually pretty cool when she’s not trying to be a bitch.

“Shit, Harry! It’s already nine, Our parents are gonna kill us for not coming home for dinner!” Chloe slurs as she stumbles to stand up, interrupting Louis’ awful story about how he almost ran over a deer when he was driving during his trip to Canada over the summer.

“Settle down, woman, I called my mum and told her we we’re going to catch dinner somewhere.”

“Oh good.” She sighs and comes to take a seat next to me on the sand that is cooling off as the sun goes down. “I think I’d be too high to go to dinner anyway. My dad would totally freak out.” She giggles.

“I’m pretty sure he’d kill me if I brought you home like this, but don’t worry, I’ll make sure he doesn’t know.” I tell her and she nods as she hiccups.

“Shit again! How are we getting home? I can’t drive like this Harry!”

“I’ll drive,” I laugh at her anxiety. “Don’t worry, I’ll be careful with your gift from daddy.” After I saw her chug that vodka thinking it was water, I decided I should stay sober to get her home.

“You’re the best.” She relaxes and lays her head on my shoulder as she yawns. I tense for a second, but I can't deny that I actually like it.

“I should probably get her home…” I announce to the guys and Perrie.

“You should bring her around next time, Haz, she’s cool.” Liam says. Yeah, I guess she has been much more tolerable tonight.

“I’m sure she’ll hate me in the morning though, so we’ll see.” I laugh and try my best to get up without her falling face first in the sand. Fuck, I’m gonna have to carry her, aren’t I?

“See ya, man.”

“Yeah see you guys.” I pick her up off the ground and she doesn’t even lift an eyelid. Damn, she must’ve really passed out.

Thankfully she’s light and I can easily carry her back to the car. She rests her head on my shoulder, and I’m able to actually really look at her. She looks so peaceful and calm, a contrast to her usual scowl at me. I’d think I was gay if I didn’t think she was hot, but there’s no way I would ever admit that to her.

Sitting her in the passenger seat and buckling her up, I realize that tonight was surprisingly fun. Maybe it won’t be so bad living here.

“Harry?” Chloe says sleepily, her eyes still closed, as I start the car.

“Yeah?” I say quietly just in case she’s talking in her sleep.

She clutches her head and grimaces. “Oh no you don’t. Chloe are you gonna be sick?” I pull her hands from her face to look at her. If she pukes in this car, she and her dad will kill me.

“No,” she bats away my hand. “I just thought I was dreaming. There is no way Harry Styles is actually being nice to me.” She laughs.

“Oh shut up,” I actually laugh with her. I do realize I’ve been a dick to her. “You’re a bitch to me, too.”

“I don’t mean to… I’m sorry.” She sighs. Shit, that was supposed to be a joke.

“It’s fine, Chlo.” I promise her. It’s actually refreshing not having a girl take my shit. It’s lame, but I secretly like fighting with her. It’s adorable watching her get all riled up. Fuck, what am I doing?

“I really am though. I’ve just… I’ve been through a lot lately. And I mean a lot!” She laughs. Fuck, she’s wasted. “But I really shouldn’t take it out on you. Even though you are a dick… but I am sorry. And you’re actually really cool right now so I hope we can be friends!”

I laugh as she goes on and on about how thinks my British accent is cool and she tries to do one herself. She almost talks the whole way home, but then finally passes out again. I sit in the car watching her for a little bit, hoping she’ll wake up so I don’t have to carry her again, and I can’t help but wonder why she puts on a front.

I mean, at first I thought she really was just a bitch, but after tonight it’s obvious that she’s just putting on some façade to hide something. Is it weird that I want to know what’s got her thinking she needs to put up walls? That I want to get to know her more?

After ten minutes she doesn’t even twitch, so I decide I should probably get her to bed. It’s only ten, but I have a feeling she’ll need all the sleep she can get.

I get out of the car and round the front to collect her from the passenger seat. I pick her tiny body up and shut the door quietly behind me. Mum texted me an hour ago saying she and David were heading to bed, so I don’t want to risk them waking up and seeing Chloe like this.

I carry Chloe up to her room and put her in her bed. God, she’s not like the other girls… She’s pretty without wearing too much makeup or product in her silky brown hair, she’s actually cool when she wants to be and what the fuck is she doing to me? I can’t be thinking this shit about her.
