Can't Remember to Forget You

Chapter 14

I stand in the same spot in my room for God knows how long. I don’t know if I was waiting for Harry to come back, hoping to wake up from this nightmare, or simply to shocked to move, but I couldn’t. My feet were planted on the carpet as I tried to process in my brain what the fuck just went wrong.

I’m so angry that Harry would jump to conclusions and assume something more was going on, but I know why he did. He completely overreacted, but after putting myself in his shoes, I understand why. I don’t know why the fuck I thought calling Grant would be okay, but I did it, and now I’m paying for it.

After about ten minutes of contemplation, I forced my legs to move and walked over to Harry’s room, where he had been hidden in since he walked out on me.

I pressed my ear agasint the door, hoping maybe I could hear any sign of what he was doing, but there wasn’t one. I lightly knocked on the door, but I didn’t get a response. “Harry,” I sighed. “I’m sorry. Can we please just talk about this.”

“Go away, Chloe.”

He has every reason to be angry with me, but now he’s just acting childish. I deserve the chance to explain myself.

“Harry come on.” I lean forward and press my forehead against the door while I impatiently wait for him to give in. He doesn’t. All he does is turn on his music... and he turns it as loud as it can go.

I give up. I don’t know what to do, and Lord knows how stubborn Harry is. I decide to give him space, and hopefully tomorrow we can talk it out, but for now (even though it’s seven at night), I need to sleep.

I wake up at four the next morning, still dressed in the clothes I was wearing yesterday. I groan looking at the time, but it feels nice to have gotten nine hours of sleep that I desperately needed.

It’s Thursday, so I decided I would get ready for school and then finish up the homework I gave up on yesterday after Dad came in to talk to me. Ugh, I still haven’t thought about how I want to feel about that. First things first though, I need to fix things with Harry.

Once it’s time to leave for school, I open Harry’s bedroom door hoping we can talk before we go. But he’s not there. I check his closet, bathroom, the kitchen… pretty much every room in this huge house, but he’s already gone. Just great.

I reluctantly go to school after he ignores every single one of my texts and calls. This is going to be more difficult than I thought.

Thursday and Friday pass slowly with still no word from Harry. He hasn’t come home, answered any of my calls, and I have not seen him at school. I was angry at first, but now I’m just worried. Especially after I called all of his friends, and they promised they didn’t know where he was.

All I can wonder is why. Why is he taking this so far? I understand he may be hurt, but disappearing for two, almost three, days? It’s selfish.

It’s Saturday morning when I finally confront Anne. She hasn’t mentioned anything about Harry’s absence, so I never brought it up. Either she knows where he is, this is typical for Harry, or she doesn’t care. I don’t know which one it is, but it’s time I spoke up.

“Hey Anne… Have you seen Harry lately? I was going to ask him if he could help me with something for school.” I ask her as she looks at wedding dresses on her iPad.

She turns off the tablet, sets it on her lap and looks up at me. “Well, he said he was staying at a friends from school because they have a big project to work on. You haven’t seen him at school?”

“No,” I shake my head. She frowns, and I realize he must be lying to her about staying at a friends house too. And I’m not about to tattle on him, even though I am worried about him. “But we don’t have any classes together so I usually don’t.”

“Oh, well he should be coming home some time soon.” She informs me. I smile and nod before walking back towards the kitchen. “Chloe, hold up—”

“Yeah?” I turn and look back at her.

“Your father said he wanted to give you some space this weekend, so we decided to head up to L.A. for a few nights to get some things for the wedding. Do you think you’ll be okay alone? Or would you prefer us to stay?”

“No, you guys should go. I’ll be fine.” I promise her. I appreciate my dad giving me space—I still need to think about what he told me, and with everything going on with Harry, it’s been challenging to find the time or room in my brain to.

“Great.” She smiles and returns to her dress shopping.

I had made plans with Brynn last week to go out tonight, but I decided to just stay home. She was a little disappointed, but there was no way I would enjoy going to some party when I have so much on my mind at the moment.

After my dad and Anne left for Los Angeles this morning, I finished my homework that was due Monday, cleaned my room and bathroom, organized my closet and even washed my car. I was doing anything to find a distraction, and the next thing on my list was to grab a pint of ice cream and watch a few movies.
I finished Mean Girls, and just as I began Pitch Perfect, the doorbell rang. I ignored it wight the assumption that it was a solicitor or something, and pressed play on the movie. Whoever was out there rang the doorbell one more time before pounding on the door.

Who the hell is here at six on a Saturday?

I finally got up and made my way to the front door. Maybe it will be a Girl Scout selling cookies. I hope I have cash, thin mints would go great with the vanilla ice cream I have.

Just as fast as I opened the door, I pushed it shut. But the person standing on the front step caught it before I could shut it and lock it.

“Chloe, hold up.”

“Grant what are you doing here?” I asked, my whole body tensing up at the boy who I haven’t seen in months.

“I came to see you. Will you let me in?”

“That’s not a good idea.” I know Harry’s not here, but I’m not going to disrespect him again by giving Grant the time of day. I care about Harry much more than I care about Grant, end of discussion.

“Chlo, when you called on Thurday… I got worried. Is everything okay?”

He seriously drove five hours because he was worried about me?

“Yes, I’m fine. You really shouldn’t have come here.”

He forced the door all the way open, but didn’t make any move to come inside. We stood on the porch about five feet from each other; I didn’t want to be near him.

“I still love you Chloe, of course I should have come. I wanted to make sure you were doing fine after the what your dad told you.”

“Grant just leave. I'm fine, really.”

“Look, that’s not the only reason I came.” He sighed and looked away while running his hands through his hair. “Will you give me another chance? We can make it work, I’ll come here whenever I can, you can come back to Tempe for the weekends… And in the fall, we’ll both go to ASU like we planned… I’m ready now babe.”

I couldn’t believe this was happening… Grant was here, and he was trying to get me back.

“No Grant, we’re done for good. Now you should go. It’s not a good idea for you to be here.”

“Is your dad home?” He frowned.

“No, I’m here alone.” Why did I just tell him that? “But you really need to go. It’s not happening. I’ve moved on, so should you.”

“I made a mistake Chloe, and I’m sorry. I need you back.”

“You should to go.” I repeat.

“Why?” He shrugs. “Fuck no, you’re not already dating someone else are you? Who is it? What’s his name?”

“Stop Grant!” I yell. “Even if I am, it’s none of your business. It’s been three months, I’ve moved on. You broke my heart, and there is no chance in hell you will be fixing it. Now you need to go.”

“I’m not going. You know you don’t want me to.”

“I think she does.” I gasp when I turn around to see Harry standing at the end of the sidewalk, all bruised and scratched up. Then I notice a car pulling out of the driveway and driving off. He must've been dropped off.

“Harry what happened?” I’m so glad he’s finally back, but he looks seriously hurt. His jeans are ripped and there’s a cuts all down his leg and arm. His face is all cut up too.

“Who is this?” Grant turns to me, looking furious.

“Get off my property before I call the police.” Harry warns and limps closer. I don’t know what he’s going to do, but he looks far to weak to fight Grant.

“Your property?” Grant laughs. “Sorry man, but I already know this is her house.”

“He’s my step brother, Grant.” I tell him. The smile on his face quickly disappears before he looks back to me.

“Tell him you know me then, that you want me to stay.”

“I don’t want you to stay. You should go home.”

“Chloe—“

“Leave!” Harry yells. “Get back in your fucking car and leave my house. She doesn’t want you here.”

“Harry,” I whimper. I appreciate him defending me, but I don’t want him to start a fight with Grant (who I know has a small temper) and get even more hurt.

“Chloe, why don’t you go inside.” Harry says calmly without taking his eyes off of Grant who hasn’t left.

“Harry come inside with me.” I beg.

“Go inside Chloe, I want a word with your brother here.” Grant adds.

“Grant just leave. I don’t want you here, and I don’t want you.” I tell him.

“Yes you do!” Grant yells. “Now go inside and wait for me to speak to him before I come in and talk to you.”

Who does he think he is?!

“Just leave.” Harry says like fighting him isn’t worth it. “You’re not worth my time.”

“Like you could fight me anyway.” Grant scoffs.

“You’re right,” Harry says sarcastically. “Why don’t you hop in that car off yours and head back home. She obviously doesn’t want you back… I can see why.”

Grant looks at me before turning back to Harry. “This is pathetic.” He shakes his head and walks back to his car. “Fuck you, Chloe Hayes. I didn’t want you back anyways, I just wanted to fuck you like the whore you really are!” He yells as he walks backwards.

He turns back around and gets in his car. He starts it, backs out of the driveway and speeds away.

Once his car is out of sight, I collapse onto the chair sitting on the porch and bury my face in my hands while I cry. This day, no week, has been so fucked up. I don’t know how much more I can handle.

“Shh, baby it’s okay.” Harry whispers. I feel his arms wrap around me, and I cry even more. I’ve missed him so much.

I hug him close to me and let him comfort me until I stop crying. “I’m sorry Harry, I didn’t know he was coming… I’m so sorry—“

“Stop.” He orders. “I know, baby, I know.”

“What happened to you? Where did you go? Why did you leave me?” I blurt out and finally look back at him.

“Let’s go inside, okay?” He asks and silences me by kissing me on the lips. I don’t know if he has forgiven me or not, but I happily return his kiss and melt into his touch like I always do. “I’m sorry too… Let’s go talk inside.”
