Blindsided

Chapter 2

(Paris)

I stayed by the wall, walking down the hallways with the lady from the office. I kept one finger on the wall, softly searching for any markings so I could familiarize the place slightly.

I know how most blind people would feel around the wall with both hands, but that always seemed weird and awkward.

"Here we are Ms.Frost. You're first class." She said. I felt a bit of markings on something plastic square thingy. '313'. "Thank you." I smiled and jumped a bit as a piece of paper touched my hand. "Oh! I'm sorry." I said grabbing the paper.

"It's okay. Just wait out here for a moment, okay?" She chuckled. I smiled again and nodded. I moved back when she opened the door and went in. I sighed and leaned my back against the wall, lifting one leg up and placing my foot on the wall too.

I drummed my fingertips on the wall, making a soft beat. What was taking so long? My leg was getting tired from being propped up like that for a while so I just put it down on the floor and let my ankles cross. I felt my mind begin to wonder and having a feeling that I wasn't going anywhere for a while, I let it.

-Flashback-
I rolled over in my bed and groaned. I was so tired but I could not fall asleep, I huffed and and got up from my bed and walked into the kitchen.

Food helps me fall asleep.... don't judge me. I smelt smoke and looked into the oven and on the stove to make sure no one left any food on. Nothing was in there. Okay? But I still smelled the smoke and that worried me.

I followed it until I saw the cause of it. An electrical shortage in the living room. Fire sparked out of the outlet and caught on the curtain. "Sara! Mom!" I screamed running through the halls. "Get the hell up Sara! There's a fucking fire in the living room!" I yelled banging on her door. I heard the door unlock and moved back when it flung open.

"Oh my god! I'll call the fire department." She said running to her phone. My next stop was Mom's room, I was worried because her room was slightly closer to the living room than Sara's but the way the house was formatted I went through the second living room door and ended up by Sara's room instead.

"Mom!" I yelled tossing open her door. I covered my mouth and nose with my shirt. I ran over to her, she was barely breathing. My mother was a light and very thin woman. Probably 120 pounds at most. I lifted her by the arms and semi dragged her through the door. I looked to my left towards the living room, fire was everywhere.

It had fled from the curtain, to the furniture and everything in between. I coughed and dragged my mom out the house but I stumbled and fell. The fire was closer. I got up and tried to run, I would never leave my mother. Boom. "Ah!" I screamed.

My face was hot. I fell down on to the floor. Oh god. I couldn't see, my head throbbed and my eyes burned. I couldn't see! Everything was blank. "Sara! I can't see!" I cried out. I heard banging and felt my self being lifted up and consoled.

We were taken to the hospital. Sara was okay but mom was gone and I was left blind, they said it was likely that I would be blind permanently.

-End-

I gasped and stood up on shaky legs. That damn memory haunts me to this day. I was fifteen when that happened.

Sara had just turned eighteen a month before. the court had granted her custody of me and we moved to where my mom was originally from before she married my dad.

A place called Holmes Chapel, Cheshire. I felt the door knob twist and the lady come out. "You can go in now Paris." She said softly and happily. I nodded and walked in. "Hello." a male voice said. He sounded a bit older, like 40 maybe?

I'm guessing he was the teacher. "Are you the new student?" He asked. I nodded, looking through my glasses and across the room. He turned me in a different direction, most likely to face the class, which I didn't want to do.

"Hello class. This is our new Student." He paused. "Paris, Paris Frost." I finished with a small wave.

Notes

Okay in case anyone is confused, she lost her sight in an explosion when she tried to get her mother out the house. It was a small one but it caught her face. And thank you for the lovely comments ^_^
