HALF A HEART
Chapter 43
One Week Later...
"Oh c'monnnnn!" Harry said baffled as we walked into the school. His arm was wrapped around my shoulder and the same hand held onto mine. I laughed and looked up to see his emerald eyes shining down at me, a smile perking at the corners of his mouth. "Seriously?" He raised an eyebrow at me.
"Yes Haz!" I reasoned as I looked back down the school hallway to see where I was going. "Johnny Depp is the best actor ever!"
"Oh Annie! You can't be serious. JOHNNY DEPP?! Hugh Grant TOTALLY beats Johnny Depp any day."
"Puh-lease" I laughed. I turned to face him when we stopped outside of my classroom. I rested my hands on his chest and began to fiddle with the collar of his jacket.
He let out a sigh. "Fineeee," the bell sounded throughout the school. He glanced around me quickly as if he was checking on something and I felt a twinge of nervousness settling in my stomach. He turned his emerald gaze back on me; "I'll see you at lunch okay?" He smiled.
"Sure." I chuckled and he cupped my face in his warm hands and pecked me on the lips.
"I love you." He whispered as he began to walk away.
"I love you too..." Well that was odd. I watched Harry walk away for a second before I turned to walk into class but then I stopped with my eyes on Harry.
He was talking to a girl with dark waves down to her elbow, a red bow clipping her bangs back. He was leaning against a locker in his pathetic attempts to look casual but his darting eyes suggested otherwise. His shoulders were rounded as if he was trying to hide his conversation with the girl. Harry?
"Annie!" I jumped as Eleanor yelled my name into my ear. I looked at her quickly.
"Hey El." I said and then turned my stare back to Harry. My eyes widened when I realized he wasn't standing there anymore. Neither him nor the girl was anywhere to be seen.
"You okay Annie?" Eleanor asked as she walked back up to me.
I replied still looking down the hallway, "Y--yeah I’m okay...."
I walked into the classroom with Eleanor and sat in our usual seats in the back left corner. I put my feet on the edge of the chair in front of me as I took my notebook and pencil out of my book bag. I flipped to the back pages and skimmed through all of my doodles. I flipped to a new page and inched my art supplies out of my backpack. I picked a thin charcoal pencil and began to sketch a rose.
"Annie what happened?" She whispered to me as the teacher began to lecture
"Nothing." I tried to say in the most innocent voice I could conjure though my heart was racing with nervousness and paranoia. I tried to focus on the flower I was drawing while I listened to the teacher’s speech about his weekend. Yeah nobody cares…
"C'mon Annie. I know you too well. What did you see?"
I let my shoulders slump and looked at her, "I saw Harry talking to some random girl I've never seen before. He was really distracted when he said goodbye to me this morning and then he went to talk to her. While he was talking to her he looked like he was trying to hide the conversation..."
"Eleanor, Annie," the teacher said removing his marker from the whiteboard and stared at us, "End the conversation or I'm gonna move one of you." He warned and turned back to writing chemical equations. I guess he had finished telling us his life story…
When El figured he wasn’t listening she turned to look at me. "Honey I highly doubt anything is happening. He is SO in love with you. Trust me love" She soothed.
"I know, but the last time he acted like this I caught him with Celine. I can't go through something like that again. After that happened everything just progressively got worse and worse."
"Annie! Eleanor! Zip it!" The teacher ordered.
Eleanor waited a couple seconds and then spoke again, "I know but he fucking flew to Los Angeles to see you last weekend. I highly doubt he has his eyes on anyone else."
I nodded and replayed that weekend in my head. It was the most magical sequence of days I've ever experienced. I closed me eyes as I remembered his declaration of how much he loved me.
I shook my head and started to shade the rose for texture. I glanced up at the board and threw my charcoal pencil back in my backpack in frustration. I slid my Chem notebook over and opened it to a new page before I started copying the chemical equations. "You're right." I said. She rubbed my back reassuringly for a second and smiled at me and I tried my best to smile back with confidence.
I hope Eleanor is right… I’m just so paranoid that I’m going to lose him again, though he has given me no reason until this morning to doubt him. I just can’t lose him…not again…
I walked into the cafeteria with my book bag slung over one shoulder as I read my copy of “Hamlet” by Shakespeare. “To be or not to be—that is the question…” I read to myself and jumped when I felt a hand snake around my waist. I looked up to see Harry’s curls shading his face as he reached to take my book from me.
He took it out of my hands and looked at the cover. “You’re such a nerd.” He laughed and handed it back to me. He kissed my temple when I began to protest. “I’m kidding.” He laughed moving a strand of my golden locks behind my ear so he could kiss my cheek. “So how was Chemistry?” He asked when we sat down at the cafeteria lunch table.
“Boring as ever. Mr. Warner insisted on telling us every detail of his weekend before he wrote chemical equations on the marker board. Oh boy!” I said sarcastically. “How was choir?” I asked when he didn’t say anything, his eyes fixated on something in front of him. “Harry?” I snapped.
“Huh?” He turned his emerald eyes on me.
“How—was—choir?” I said more sternly.
“Oh! Oh yeah it was fine. We’re doing “Bridge Over Troubled Waters” right now so naturally it’s a blast.”
“Uh huuuuuh.” I said raising an eyebrow at him.
“What?” He asked, his face hardening and his eyes becoming focused on me as he searched my face.
“You just seem,” I paused searching for my word, “distracted.”
He shook his head. “I’m not distracted love. I’m tired but I’m not distracted.” He gave me an innocent smile.
“Uh huh.” I said grabbing my water bottle and taking a sip of it.
“I’m gonna go get lunch.” He said and leaped off of his stool and started walking toward the lunch line. I looked around and grabbed his backpack, unzipping the biggest pocket and finding his lunch in it.
“Damn it.” I cursed to myself. I looked up and almost threw up. Harry was talking to the same girl he was talking to this morning. “Eleanor!” I hissed and she looked at me in mid-bite of her sandwhich.
“What?” She said as she was chewing.
I tapped her shoulder and pointed toward Harry and the girl. “THAT’S the girl that Harry was talking to this morning too.”
“Cameron? Cameron Little? Oh Annie she’s harmless” She said wiping her mouth on a napkin.
“How am I supposed to know that?”
“Well go up to them if you’re so paranoid about it.” She said a little annoyed. I rolled my eyes as she turned back to her conversation with Louis.
I got up from the stool and started walking over to Harry. He was speaking with his shoulders slumped again and his eyes were darting around like he was nervous or hiding something. His emerald eyes caught sight of me walking towards him and his eyes grew wide. He leaned into the girl and whispered something to her and just as I was walking up to them she darted into the crowd of kids buying their lunch.
“Hey babe.” He said nervously with his hand on the back of his neck and his other hand crammed into his pocket.
“Who was that Haz?” I asked raising an eyebrow.
“That’s Cameron Little. She’s just a friend.”
“Uh huh.” I said not believing him. Could he really have his eyes on another girl a two weeks after he remembered me? And could he already be looking for someone else when he had spilled his heart out to me? I didn’t want to believe it but all of the signs were telling me that it was true… “I thought you were getting your lunch.” I crossed my arms.
“Yeah I am.” He said grabbing an apple from the fruit selection behind him and a tray.
“Yeah, your lunch is in your book bag.” I said and turned around and started walking away.
“Annie!” He said and I looked to the floor and saw the apple Harry had been holding role past my feet. He grabbed my wrist and snaked his arm around my waist.
“Harry…” I said annoyed.
He turned me to face him and snaked his other arm around my waist. “Please tell me that you’re not thinking what I think you’re thinking.” He half smirked at me but I could see the concern laced in his emerald gaze. I stared back into his eyes and nodded softly. “Oh Annie.” He breathed and cupped my face with his warms hands. “Please don’t ever think that. I will never do that to you every again. Trust me when I say that I’ve learned my lesson. You’re my girl, and you’re my ONLY girl.” He emphasized, placing his fingers on my chin and lifting my head up to look at him when I started to look down. “Okay?”
I nodded and he replaced his other hand on my cheek and pulled my face forward to touch our lips together. I wrapped my arms around his ribcage just as someone stuck their hands in between us and pushed us apart, our lips staying connected for as long as possible.
“Styles. Richards. No PDA in the hallways or cafeteria. You know that.” Mr. Carlton said raising an eyebrow at us.
I felt my cheeks turn pink as Mr. Carlton walked away. “Well that was embarrassing.” I laughed.
He tucked a strand of my hair behind my ear and looked at me with passion threaded into his emerald stare. “I love you Annie.” He whispered.
I smiled up at him. “I love you too Harry.”
He laced his fingers with mine and led me back to the cafeteria table. Eleanor looked at me quizzically and I just shook my head. She laughed chuckled softly and gave me an, “I told you so,” look.
Harry looked at me suddenly, his emerald eyes wide. “What are you doing Friday night love?”
“Probably hanging out with you.” I laughed.
“Good! Because I’m taking you out on a date.” He wiggled his eyebrows at me and I leaned over and pecked his lips.
“Sounds wonderful.” I smiled.
