HALF A HEART

Chapter 39

Author’s Note: I was listening to “Brave” by Sara Bareilles while I wrote this so imagine that tempo for how fast he’s moving(:

Harry’s POV

I belted down the tunnel from the plane and into the airport. I didn’t even bring a suitcase, just my carryon with a change of clothes and my toothbrush. I whipped my phone out quickly and dialed Mrs. Richard’s number.

“You’ve landed?” I heard her reply after one ring.

“Yes, yes. I’m here. I’m walking through LAX right now. Where is she? Where will she be?”

“There were really only two places in LA that she would have a desire to visit right now. The first one will be the pier. Walk down it and go to the eighth bench on the right. That’s her favorite spot. If she’s not there then she’s at the cemetery visiting her father.”

I felt my heart drop when she said the last sentence. Oh my poor Annie… “Thanks Mrs. Richards. I’ll find her.” I clicked the phone off and began to jog out of LAX. A warm breeze smacked me in the face, throwing my curls on top of my head.

I whistled for a taxi and climbed in clumsily. “To the pier!” I yelled.

“Right away sir.” The taxi driver replied and sped off from the airport.

I twiddled my thumbs and stared at the window at Annie’s city. Enormous buildings and palm trees loomed over me as the clouds blocked the sun. It was obvious that it had rained here earlier because the pavement was damp. The taxi driver drove along the beach and I stared into the turquoise ocean as I absorbed Annie’s hometown. He pulled up in front of the pier and I gave the driver the money I owed him before I stumbled out of the car and broke into a sprint. My heart pounded painfully against my ribcage as I counted the benches on the right. I stopped short when I got to it and saw it occupied by a couple with their tongues down their throat. Yup DEFINITELY not Annie. I whirled around and searched the faces of the other people. I got a few strange looks from strangers, as my eyes grew wide with worry and anticipation when I didn’t see her.

I turned and sprinted back down the pier convinced that she wasn’t there. I got to the street and rushed a taxi, receiving a loud obnoxious blare of his horn. I put my hands out in front of me and hopped in the back seat.

“You trying to kill yourself boy?” The taxi driver huffed at me as he stared at me through his rearview mirror.

“N—No,” I stammered as I attempted to catch my breath. “To the cemetery please.” I croaked. He shrugged and floored the gas pedal causing my head thrown back.

It took twenty minutes for the taxi to reach the cemetery gate. I paid the man and stumbled out of the yellow car again. I took a look around and my eyes grew wide as I stared at the endless hills filled with tombstones. I fetched my phone out of my pocket and dialed Mrs. Richards’s number again.

“Did you find her?” She asked eagerly.

“She wasn’t at the beach but I’m standing in the cemetery now. Which way should I go?”

“You’re staring down the long driveway right?”

“Yes ma’am.”

“Okay just walk down that path and then you’ll take a right at the fork and then a left at some stairs. Take the stairs up and that will be the hill that he’s on.” She said, her voice cracking a little on the last sentence.

“Thank Mrs. Richards.” I whispered.

“You’re welcome honey. Good luck.” She said and I heard her click off.

Author’s Note: Now I’m listening to “Say Something” by a Great Big World so the tone and setting are much more sorrowful and slow.

I put my phone back into my pocket and stared down the endless pathway. My heart began to beat faster as I started to walk. I looked around at the tombstones and instantly felt sadder like I always did in a cemetery. I took the right when the fork in the path came. My heart beat faster as I knew that Annie was getting closer to me with every step. My poor baby was here with her father, probably incredibly sad and I’m not there to hold her as she grieves.

I walked up the stairs on the left and came to the top of the hill. I stopped short when I saw Annie sitting on the damp ground in a ball of sobs and tears. Her hand was fisted on top of one of the stones and her back was turned to me, but I could tell that she was crying so hard that it hurt. I felt tears rim my eyes as I saw her in so much pain. I started walking again but tried my best not to make a sound; I didn’t want to frighten her. I stopped walking when she stood up but I didn’t need to walk any further, she was standing a couple feet away from me.

“Annie?” I croaked around the knot growing in my throat. I saw her flinch and then she turned around and my breath caught as I took in her beauty. Her eyes were puffy and her cheeks were blotchy but she was beautiful. I saw her eyes fill with more tears when she realized that it was me and that made my tears form easier as well.
“Harry.” She breathed and I could here the disbelief and relief in her voice.

Annie’s POV

“Harry.” I breathed and more tears streamed down my cheeks.

My breath caught when he rushed over to me and wrapped his arms around my waist and crushed me against him. He buried his face in my neck and inhaled. I let the tears fall from my eyes as I wrapped my arms around his neck and pulled him even closer to me. I felt my shoulder become damp as Harry’s tears soaked my shirt but I didn’t care.

“Harry.” I whimpered and he lifted his head to look at me but did not release me from his grasp. “Harry, I can’t believe you’re here.” I said as I let more tears stream down my cheeks.

He straightened himself but did not increase the space between us and moved his hands to cup my face as he wiped my tears away with his thumbs. “Of course I’m here.” He croaked and I rapped my arms around his ribcage as I tilted my head into one of his hands. A weak smile pulled at the corners of my mouth.

“I thought you didn’t remember me?” I whispered as my heart remembered the pain of the past few weeks.

“How could I ever forget how much I love you?” He whispered back. I closed my eyes trying to hold back the tears that were soaking my face. “I’m back Annie.” He said and I opened my eyes again. “And I’m not going anywhere.” He whispered.

He pulled my face forward to meet his and I watched as his emerald eyes closed though tears still spilled down his cheeks. I closed my eyes too and my breath caught as our lips met. My body began to tingle in remembrance of how this felt. I missed him so much. I squeezed him against me and the kiss became more passionate. He moved his hands from my face to my lower back and the back of my neck. I slithered my hands up his toned chest and locked them behind his neck as his tongue parted my lips and began to explore my mouth with a fiery passion. I couldn’t ignore the fact that both of us were still practically weeping, our tears colliding with each other’s and small gasps escaped our mouths when we could hardly breathe anymore.

He pulled his lips off of mine and buried his face in my neck again as he crushed me even harder against him. “I missed you so much.” He whispered into my hair and I could hear the pain threaded into his voice. I rested my forehead on his shoulder and inhaled his scent and I immediately felt relaxed and calm.

“I can’t believe how long it’s been.” I whispered into his shoulder and I felt his head nod against my neck.

“My heart hurts so bad right now.” He croaked and I lifted his head so that his tear stained eyes would meet mine. I saw how overwhelmed he was through his emerald gaze. “My heart feels like it’s going to explode. I just love you so much. I can’t believe I forgot this feeling and I can’t believe how long it’s been since I’ve been able to hold you and tell you that you’re my world. I can’t believe I haven’t been able to tell you that you’re everything to me and I never want to lose you ever again.”

I replied by pulling his lips against mine again and I felt his tears splatter my cheeks and could hear him trying not to sob. I crushed him against me again as my own tears fell. I pulled my lips away and hugged him against me as I laid my head on his shoulder, inhaling the smell of the skin on his neck.

“I love you.” I whispered and he rested his head against mine as his hands rubbed up and down my back like he couldn’t believe that I was standing here in his arms. I could feel his heart pounding against his ribcage and I knew that mine closely matched his tempo. I closed my eyes and nuzzled into his neck.

I couldn’t believe that he had finally remembered me. My heart, like Harry’s, felt like it was going to burst with how much love it had for the man that currently held me in his arms. He’s my best friend, and I’m so luck to say that he means the world to me and that I mean the world to him. He’s my everything and I’m so happy to have him back.
