HALF A HEART
Chapter 36
I stared at Harry as he sat on my bed looking at his twiddling fingers. His chocolate curls fell across his eyes so part of his face was masked in a shadow. I admired the curve of his back as he sat there and his toned muscles that could be seen through his thin shirt.
“Before I tell you anything I want you to know that I will not lie to you about what happened. I won’t sugarcoat anything either because you deserve to know the whole truth.”
“I really appreciate that Annie. I wouldn’t want it any different.”
“What do you want me to tell you first?”
He took a deep breath and then he turned his emerald gaze on me. “How did Celine and I actually break up? She told me it was mutual between us and then told me she didn’t know why I started dating you when we still had feelings for each other.”
His face looked so innocent. He literally had no recollection of the past five or six months of his life and his confusion made my heart ache and my stomach twist. Was Celine really that low that she would take advantage of his injury in order to get him back? Of course she would… it’s Celine…
“It wasn’t mutual Harry…” I said softly and I watched his shoulders rise as he inhaled. He gave me a small nod allowing me to continue. “She was so mean to you Harry. Almost everyday for a month she would tell you that you made her stressed and that she’d be so much happier without you.”
“I can’t believe her…”
“And then…” I paused.
“What Annie? Just tell me.” He looked at me with urgency in his emerald gaze.
“You cheated on her, but you were already planning on breaking up with her.”
“I guess she kind of deserved it didn’t she.” He said glumly.
“Uh yeah! I’m glad to see that you’re seeing it again.” I laughed and he chuckled with me.
“Okay next question,” He started into my eyes and I could tell that he was nervous to ask me the next question. I just nodded feeling my heart race. “What happened after you got back from the States? Louis wouldn’t tell me.”
I took a deep breath as I heard the question that I knew was coming. “You’re not going to like this but you need to know.” I waited for him to nod and when he did I continued, “So Celine texted you one morning and wanted to talk to you. You agreed because that’s just you and she asked you why you cheated on her and you were furious because the reason was obvious. And then… well then she kissed you…” I saw him flinch but he needed to know this, “And you kissed her back…” He flinched again, “And then I walked past and saw you guys.” I relayed as the pain returned to my heart yet it seemed so pointless now.
He lay back onto my pillows. “Shit…” he breathed.
“It’s okay Harry.” I said softly.
“No it’s not. That’s not okay.” He stared at the ceiling.
“But I forgive you.” I whispered and he looked at me quickly when I said that.
He sat up slowly. “You do?” I just nodded. “Why?”
“Because I love you…” I whispered again and could feel how shaky my voice was as my cheeks flushed. His face relaxed into an almost surprised expression. I cleared my throat, “Anyway,” and he became concentrated on what I was going to say next. “So obviously we broke up and it honestly destroyed us both.”
“And we never got back together before my accident?” He asked and I just shook my head. “Okay so, Louis already told me how I got in a coma so let’s skip that.” He said and I nodded. “So what did you do while I was in a coma?”
I took a deep breath. “I wanted people to know why you had pulled over to help that man. I wanted people to know that you’re life might be over because you were helping someone and saved someone’s life. I wanted you to be remembered for something incredible so I decided to speak to schools about standing up for what they believe in and defending people that don’t have the confidence to do it themselves.” I watched, as his eyes grew wide.
“You did all of that for me?”
“Of course.” I croaked not realizing how nervous I was to tell him what I had made my life when he was in a coma.
“How many schools did you speak to?”
“Over 50. I was in the States talking to schools when you woke up.”
His eyes grew wide again. “Annie, that’s incredible.”
“I did it for you.” I shrugged. It was the truth…
“Thank you.” He whispered.
I smiled and nodded wanting desperately for him to hold me, for him to kiss me with his tender lips and twirl his fingers through my hair.
“So is anything starting to come back? Are you remembering any of this?”
He shook his head, “I just feel like you told me a few stories but I’m trying SO hard to apply them to myself and make myself believe that those things happened to me but it’s just not working.”
I rested my hand on his shoulder, “You’ll get there.” He smiled weakly at me. “Here there’s something I want to show you that may help you remember.” I jumped off my bed and went over to my dresser. “Maybe if you actually SEE what happened you’ll be able to recall it better.” I smiled coming back to the bed. I handed him the scrapbook.
I watched him read the title. “What is this?” He looked at me.
“Eleanor and Louis gave that to me for Valentine’s Day.”
He opened it slowly and his eyes grew wide as he took in the first pictures. “Wow this is weird…”
“Why?” I asked.
“Because I’m looking at pictures of myself from events that I don’t remember happening.” He said simply and turned the page. My shoulders slumped. I guess there was a small fraction of myself that hoped he would remember as soon as he saw the pictures but that obviously wasn’t the case…This isn’t a movie… “Where was this?” He asked pointing at one of the pictures. “And what in the world was I doing?”
I laughed as I looked at the picture he was pointing at. “You were quoting The Notebook to me as Noah said it on the screen. It was honestly so cute.” I laughed and his cheeks turned pink.
“That’s embarrassing.” He chuckled.
“No no! I loved it.”
He turned the page again and brought the book closer to his face. He set it down on his lap and looked at me. “The Annual White Party?” He asked and I nodded knowing the questions that he would ask at the next few pictures. “What was happening here?” He pointed at the next ones as he asked the exact question I knew he would.
“I,” I paused and took a deep breath as the memory washed over me making my heart race just like it had that night. “I was telling you that we had waited long enough and that I wanted to be your girlfriend if that’s what you still wanted. That’s the day we started dating.” I said reminiscing in the sweet memory.
“This is a lot to take in.” He breathed clearly overwhelmed but not taking his eyes off the book as he turned the page. The next pictures were of our reunion at the airport. He looked at me quickly. “Was this when you got back from the States?” I nodded slowly as the wonderful memory tickled my mind.
He closed the book quickly making a loud clapping sound and he threw the book off his lap.
“Are you okay?” I asked slightly regretting showing it to him.
He put his face in his hands. “Oh Annie this is so confusing.”
“What is Harry?” I said softly trying desperately to understand.
“I can’t remember anything even when it’s staring me in the face! What if I never remember what my life used to be? What if it never comes back to me and there will forever be a gap in my memory?” He looked at me quickly. “Annie, I can’t take this anymore. I hate not remembering how we apparently used to be,” His words stung my heart but I know he didn’t mean them to. “I wish I could remember how I felt about you but I just can’t” Those words hurt even more… but again… I know he didn’t mean to… “I need to go Annie. Thank you for telling me all of this and for showing me the scrapbook. Maybe I just need to sleep on it.” He said pondering and got up from my bed and started walking toward my door.
My shoulders slumped as another attempt had failed. My eyes grew wide. “Wait Harry!” I said and ran back over to my dresser. I turned back around and he was standing near my door. I walked back over to him and handed him the CD the boys had made me. “Listen to track 7.”
He nodded and disappeared behind my door. I felt tears burn down my cheeks… If that doesn’t work… Nothing will…And if it doesn’t work…
I may have lost Harry forever…
