Beautiful Dreams Of Irish Green

One

My grandmother loved Ireland, she loved the green of the country, the accents, and the strong community within one country.
I loved Ireland because it was far away from New York, away from my mom who wasn’t always home and away from my friends who always wanted to gossip. I loved my family here and the experience, is one I haven’t been able to experience anywhere. I’ve been to Ireland about seven times, but only County Mayo.
“Why don’t you go out and explore?” My Aunt Anne said while folding laundry. I was writing in my journal.
“I think that’d be delightful. Penny, listen to your aunt” My grandmother agreed. She called me Penny instead of Penelope because she believed I turned heads and a Penny on heads is good luck.
“Take the train to Dublin, go to the city and have some fun! It only takes three and a half hours!” My cousin Clara said. Clara was twenty five and she was an irish girl, gorgeous to the core with a pale complexion and red hair.
“You know what? That doesn’t sound too bad.” I said getting up and grabbing my bag.
“Don’t forget your raincoat! It’s supposed to get a bit of a chill!” My Aunt Anne said.
I smiled at them before collecting all of my things off the table and putting them into my bag.

It was a gray day and I rushed to the train station, I bought my ticket for the next available train and I caught it with two minutes to spare.
The train ride went quicker than I believed, at least an hour less than I expected.
I got off the train and saw the signs all for “County Westmeath”.
There weren’t many people in this station so I stopped a man in mid-stride.
“Excuse me, what County is this?” I asked.
He answered in a strong irish accent, “County Westmeath.”
“Thank you,” I said.
How did I end up here? I rushed with the ticket and got the wrong one. I looked down at my red rain boots and squirmed a bit.
I walked over to the ticket booth and looked at the times. The next train back to County Mayo was in three hours.
I found my way to a secluded coffee shop on one of the main streets. Barely anyone was in there but the barista was frazzled. After I sat down I pulled my journal out and started writing. I decided I was going to describe the barista.
Five minutes later, I got bored and decided I couldn’t sit for less than a minute. I walked out and found myself wandering around the streets of Westmeath.
I found myself in a big grassy field of open land with a red bench. The sky was gray. I was the only one out here.
I sat on the bench and took a picture of the sight in front of me with my phone, which had no signal. I raised my phone in the air.
A strong irish accent came from behind me. “It ain’t gonna ‘elp,” It said. I turned to see a boy with a baseball hat, a gray hoodie, and aviator sunglasses. I could see his blonde hair peer from beyond his hat.
“Thanks,” I said about to gather my things and walk away from this complete stranger.
“You’re from America?” He asked as he came closer and I eyed him suspiciously.
“Yea.”
“I was just over there. Got some crazy people there,” He said putting his hand behind his head scratching it.
“Yea,” I laughed awkwardly. “Well, thank you. I have to go,” I said getting up.
“Where is it you’re going?” He asked with a smile. He had a crooked smile, a melt your heart kind of smile.
“I’m going to County Mayo,” I told him pushing a piece of hair behind my ear.
“That’s quite the ways end isn’t it?” He asked
“I got stuck here by mistake and I have a train to catch in two hours.” I told him and he laughed and took off his sunglasses.
“I’m Ni-, Nick,” he said putting his hand out to shake mine.
“Penelope,” I told him with an arched eyebrow.
“Have you ever been told you share an uncanny resemblance with that guy from that One Road group,” I said and he laughed again.
“One Direction?”
All of my friends adored them, I just didn’t have time to listen and fangirl over them.
“Are you sure that’s the name?” I asked.
He shrugged his shoulders. “How about I show you around? I know of all the little treasures here,” He smiled and again it made me smile.
I knew this guy was a complete stranger but I didn’t have anything better to do.
“I guess a few minutes can’t hurt.”

He took me to this huge garden where shamrocks grew.
“So my friend Luke was telling Zack he needed to stop staring at himself in the mirror, so my other friend Lance and I made a video replicating the fight because Luke just yelled at Zack and Zack just stared in the mirror the WHOLE time,” He laughed at the story. I even had to laugh.
All afternoon he told me stories of his friends.
“You guys seem really close,” I smiled.
“They’re like my brothers,” He looked away in the distance. “We travel a lot together.
“Do you have any siblings?” He asked in a melodic irish accent.
“I have a half baby sister who is like a month old. Her name is Jocelyn. My dad just recently remarried and my mom never wanted more than one child,” I shrugged as we sat on the bench. He looked at me.
“What do your parents do?” He asked.
“Well, my mom is an interior designer in New York and my dad is a doctor in Arizona.”
He took his hat off to show styled blonde hair that looked a little messy. He ran his hair through it and smiled.
“What’s your moms name?” He asked.
“It’s no important.” I said.
“Come on,” He nudged me and made me laugh.
“Well, she’s Fiona Driver,” I shrugged. He looked at me and raised an eyebrow.
“Everybody knows her,” He said.
“I guess,” I said leaning back on the bench.
“Must suck, when people know you like that,” He said.
I looked at him.
“They don’t know me, they know my mom.”
“Touche.”
I looked at my phone and saw that my train was going to be here in thirty minutes.
“I have to go,” I said grabbing my things but dropping my bag. Everything spilled out in the process.
He automatically started to help me. I rushed in the process of realizing I had to get to the train station.
“So this is it,” I said.
“How about you send yourself a text on my phone, just so I know you get home alright,” He smiled.
“Really?” I said sarcastically.
“I mean I know you want my number and all, Penny,” He smiled at me.
I had to stop for a moment. I handed him my phone instead and he texted himself.
“I have to go,” I said taking my phone back. “I’m sorry.”
“No. No.” He said putting his hands up, “It’s fine. This was just really refreshing. Just talking and nothing crazy.”
“Thank you,” I said and as I went to walk away he called me.
“PENNY!” I turned automatically.
“I’ll be in New York soon,” He said.
“I’ll see you then,” I smiled at him and found my way to the train station.

On the train I went to grab my journal but realized I forgot it. I automatically realized I left it when I dropped everything near the bench.
“Shit,” I muttered.
I took my phone out to text Nick, and I realized he sent me a picture of my journal with a text, ‘GO OUT WITH ME OR THE JOURNAL GETS IT!’
I had to laugh but then I got serious because that journal had my life in it.
I texted back ‘MAYBE ;) BUT IF YOU READ IT, YOU WILL REGRET IT.’
He texted me back soon after, ‘I’LL SEE YOU TOMORROW AT THE MAIN CAFE IN CM. :)’

I leaned back against my seat and watched the green furiously fly away from me and smiled.
Someone was right about this Irish green.

Notes

Well, I totally decided to do this randomly. I'm not obsessed with this band but I do think Niall is a sweetie and love him.
