Something Great

One day you'll come into my world and say it all
You say we'll be together even when you're lost
One day you'll say these words
I've thought but never said
You say we're better off together in our bed

I want you here with me
Like how I pictured it
So I don't have to keep imagining

Harry’s POV

It had been a few days since everything changed in my friendship with Scarlett.

Friendship.

As if I could even call it that. I would hate to know that this is what she does with all of her friends. Being around her was intense. As she would brush past me, I could feel all of the blood rushing to my loins and if we were alone, you bet your ass I would have her pinned against the wall in seconds.

I was still spending time with Kendall, though I would often cut our time short or invite along other friends. The more people around, the less it felt like a date and more like “friends” hanging out.

Meanwhile, all Kendall would do was complain about the fact that we weren’t spending enough alone time together anymore. I would make up every excuse in the book.

“I can’t stay over. The city’s new to Scarlett and she’s never lived alone before. She’s afraid to be there at night alone.”

Or, my favorite…

“Do you want her to hear us? That’s embarrassing!” in response to her offering to sleep at my place.

There was only a day until Scarlett and I were going our separate ways for the Christmas holidays. I promised her I would ride along to JFK with her, as it was the only way to get to Heathrow from LA, and we arranged our returning flights the same. We wouldn’t be apart for long.

“If it’s up to me we’d never be apart,” I could hear Scarlett singing to herself in the kitchen. Quietly, I crept up behind her, not recognizing the song, and tickled her sides, causing her to yelp.

“Harry! That’s not funny, I’m chopping veggies over here!” she shrieked, elbowing me in the chest. I feigned being in pain, clutching my chest, and she shook her head at me, laughing. “You’re such a goof.”

Smiling to myself, I placed a few kisses along Scar’s neck, loving that we could do these things in the privacy of our own home. “Sorry, I was distracted by your singing. Inspired by me, hmm?” I quipped. Reaching down at the cutting board, I stole a piece of green pepper Scarlett had just finished chopping, knowing how much it would annoy her.

“Harry! If you eat all of the ingredients the recipe will be wrong!” she groaned and I laughed to myself. I knew she wasn’t really upset; it was just so easy to get a reaction out of her.

“And if you must know, no the song is not about you, it’s from Instant Star. And it’s about a guitar.” Scarlett stuck her tongue out at me and I laughed even harder, she was cute when she was trying to be mean.

As I leaned in to kiss her again, I heard a knock on the door and sighed, pulling away. My phone wasn’t in my pants, so I had no clue who it could be, but only our friends knew where we lived.

Before answering the door, I went off towards my room, pulling a shirt over my head and grabbed a pair of my sweatpants for Scarlett to wear. As much as I enjoyed watching her cook in only my t-shirt and her panties, whoever our houseguest was didn’t need to see her that way.

Tossing her the pants, I made my way to the door, looking through the peephole to see who was there.

I should’ve known.

“Kendall!” I yelled as I opened the door, pretending to be more excited than I could have ever been. She didn’t seem as enthused as I was and I wasn’t sure why. We didn’t make any plans, Scarlett and I planned on having a night in, our own little Christmas before going off to see our families.

“I called you like ten times, Harry, what were you doing?” she demanded, pushing her way into the apartment. I couldn’t help but roll my eyes. It was times like these where I knew I was making the right decision in not being with her. Most of the time she was completely insane and downright stalkerish.

I couldn’t even get an answer out; Kendall was already making her way into the kitchen before I could offer up an explanation. Thankfully, Scarlett had managed to slip on tee pants before Kendall made it inside; that would have not been a fun conversation.

“Hello, Kendall,” Scarlett grinned. She could be such a faker, sometimes. I knew better than anyone else that Scarlett was not exactly Kendall’s biggest fan.

“Don’t ‘hello’ me. What were you two doing that he couldn’t answer his phone?” Scarlett tilted her head in confusion before glancing around at the array of food she had been preparing. To be fair, I hadn’t been helping her with any of it, but it seemed like a better answer than what had really happened.

I spent the better part of my day writing, actually, having been inspired by my recent evenings with Scarlett. Occasionally I would come out, shower her in a few kisses, grab a drink, and retreat back to my room, but she let me to it. That was one of the many reasons why I liked her so much. Scarlett wasn’t clingy. She didn’t have to be by my side if we were breathing the same air.

“We’ve been cooking, all day,” Scarlett finally said, breaking the silence. Kendall hadn’t spoken a word since stepping into the kitchen and I knew she wanted to be angry, but she wasn’t sure if she had any reason to be.

Aside from the kisses, Scarlett and I had been pretty tame today. We hadn’t had sex, or anything, but ever since I caught her pleasuring herself a few days ago, keeping my hands off of Scarlett was nearly impossible.

“And where’s your phone?” Kendall shot, glaring at me. I shrugged; I honestly hadn’t remembered where I last left my phone. It could’ve been in the bathroom, from when I was playing flappy bird, or it was still in my room, after my video chat with Niall. Regardless as to where it was, showing up at my apartment unannounced bordered on crazy.

“I don’t walk around my flat with my phone attached to my hip, Kendall. What is your problem? You’re acting insane,” I dismissed her claims. She had to see how crazy she was being. I know the plan was to phase her out, but this was going to happen more quickly if she kept this up.

Scarlett could see Kendall getting angrier by the moment and stepped in between us before she did something worse. “I know this isn’t any of my business, but um, I do live here as well, and if you’re not going to be civil when you talk to Harry, I will have to ask you to leave,” she spoke, standing up for me. I couldn’t believe it; I didn’t know Scarlett had it in her.

Kendall’s face turned a bright shade of red, though I doubted it was from embarrassment, and I stepped back, letting Scarlett and Kendall have this one out.

“You’re the help, sweetie. I don’t know why you don’t realize that,” Kendall spat, and I had enough. “Out!” I yelled, pointing at the door. She knew how much it bothered me when she referred to Scarlett, or anyone else I worked with, as the help. Maybe she saw her team of people as someone to fling money at.

Kendall didn’t dare challenge me. I wasn’t an angry person, but hearing me yell seemed to frighten most people. Kendall tried to backtrack, but it was too late. I couldn’t have her talking about Scarlett that way.

“I-I just wanted to drop off your Christmas gift, Harry. I’m sorry. I’m just worried that she’ll steal you away or something,” I shook my head at her. This had to end before we went on tour. If she was this jealous and paranoid now, I couldn’t even imagine how she would be when we went on tour.

And I wasn’t Kanye West. I know her sister got to go on tour the entire time, but we didn’t do that. Sure, the girls would join us from time to time, but we never had a girlfriend stay the entire duration.

“This, what you just did, was not okay. I’ll see you when I see you.” Kendall looked crushed as she left, but I had to stand my ground. If it had been Lou that she called the help, I would’ve reacted the same way. These were my friends, they just so happened to work with us.

Once I locked the door, I turned around to find Scarlett back to making dinner, her posture giving away how she was feeling. I silently walked up behind her, wrapping my arms around her waist and kissed her neck. She was upset, I could tell, and I would do everything in my power to make her feel better again.

“You’re not the help, Scar.” I whispered as I reached for her hand and took the spatula out of it. Whatever it was that she was making would have to wait. If our food was burned because of it, too bad, this was more important.

I turned her around to face me and my heart broke at her expression. Kendall’s words really got to her.

“Scarlett, even though we pay you a salary, I’d never think of you, or anyone else on our team as “the help”. You’re my friend, first, and you pick out my clothes second. Kendall, she doesn’t quite grasp that concept because she’s never had a normal life.” I realized it sounded as though I was making excuses for her, but it wasn’t my intention.

“She’s just intimidated by you, Scar. You don’t need anyone telling you how to dress or coaching you on what to say in public. You’re real, and you’re gorgeous, funny, smart, I could go on for ages about you.” Reaching down, I wiped a few stray tears from Scarlett’s face and kissed her forehead.

“So the only thing she can use to insult you is her class, but who really gives a crap about that? She was born into this world. You worked hard for it, and in my book, that still gives you the upper hand, love. Someone can only tear you down if you let them, that’s what I had to learn so many years ago.”

My little speech seemed to do the trick because moments later, Scarlett was wrapping her arms around my waist and kissing the underside of my jaw. It wasn’t anything sexual; Scar was just too short to reach my lips without standing on her toes.

“I shouldn’t let her get to me, but it’s hard sometimes. Thankfully, I have you.” I could see Scarlett’s trademark grin and I leaned forward, pressing my lips to hers.

I know I was making the right choice. I couldn’t be with someone like Kendall, someone that treated the people I surrounded myself with like crap, who thought showing up to my home and accusing me of things was okay. I let go of Scarlett, letting her get back to making our dinner and went searching for my phone.

20 missed phone calls.

One was from my mum, confirming my flight, but the rest were all Kendall. I didn’t know if phasing her out was going to work. Switching to the messages screen, I sent Kendall a message before heading back to the kitchen to finish off dinner. I left my phone in my room, not wanting to deal with the numerous replies I was sure to get. It was the one thing no one wanted to hear in a relationship.

We need to talk.
