Show Me The Way

Chapter 7

ZAYN’S POV:

So Niall went out with Grace the other night. And from the makeout session I walked in on while minding my own damn business and getting a bowl of cereal from the kitchen, I was going to go with, it went pretty well . And I was happy for him, I seriously was! But I was also slightly jealous. He had the balls to ask out a girl he liked, and look how great it ended up! While I sit around with a girl I really like and can’t grow a pair and just tell her I want to be more than friends.

So now whenever we went to the cafe, it was like the Niall and Grace love fest, and then me and Evie trying to ignore them sucking each others faces off whenever they got the chance.
“You’d think they’d have a little shame...” She joked, taking a sip from her tea. It was her break so we were just sitting on the couch in the back room with the radio on low volume. “I mean, the utility closet; really?” She laughed. I watched as she raked her fingers through her hair, adjusting her position so she was sitting cross-legged. Her sweater fell off of her shoulder slightly, revealing her shoulder, collarbone, and the strap of her bra. She was driving me crazy, and she had absolutely no clue.
“That’s quite cynical, isn’t it?” I joked.
“Whatever... If they’re happy, so am I.” I nodded, agreeing with her.
“I better get back out there. It’s about to get busy and I know for a fact that Nate can’t handle it on his own. He get’s very easily overwhelmed.” We both got up, going back into the cafe. Nate was a nice enough guy, but I couldn’t help but wonder if he had a thing for Evie. I mean, sometimes he was just really, really nice.
“Where are the lovebirds? We need all the extra hands we can get.” He said as we emerged. I took a seat at the stools.
“I’ll get them...” Evie huffed, retreating back into the hall.
“So, mate, I got a question for you.” Nate said randomly. We had never actually had a real conversation, so this was a bit strange.
“Um, alright.”
“You think Evie would go out with me if I asked?” So, I had been right.
“What? You wanna ask out Evie?”
“Well yeah. I mean, she’s fit.” The fact that that is what he was basing this on made me much more angry than it probably should.
“Is that it? And I mean, won’t it mess with the boss-employee thing? What if it doesn’t work out. Isn’t the most appropriate thing, don’t ya think?” I snapped, seeming to surprise him.
“So I was right, you like her?” He said, smirking at me
“What the fu-”
“That was a test. You failed, or passed, depending on how you look at it. I’m not really planning on asking her out. But i’ve wondered for a while if you fancied her, and you just let me know that you did.” He chuckled, pleased with himself. Me on the other hand, not so pleased. Now that someone (other than Niall) knew, it meant there was a chance that Evie could find out from someone that wasn’t me. And that would just bring up a whole other load of issues.
“Look, don’t like, tell her or anything. Please.”
“No problem. I’ll let fate take it’s course. But when you two eventually get together, i’ll be there to say I told you so.” He wasn’t a bad guy, I just didn’t like being one-upped.
“Fine, whatever.”
Evie came out a minute later pushing Niall in front of her.
“Can you take your hormonal little friend somewhere else please? Or at least keep him on a leash. I don’t wanna have to see that again.” She huffed, giving Niall one last smack on the ass so he was no longer behind the counter. Grace came out a second later; her hair disheveled and her cheeks flushed. It was then that I realized Niall’s shirt was only half buttoned.
“Might wanna fix that.” I laughed, tugging at his collar. He blushed, quickly covering himself.
“I need to stop hiring teenagers...” I heard Nate mutter, giving me a look.

EVIE’S POV:

“So, you and Niall were-”
“Stop! I’m so embarrassed I can’t talk about it!” Grace said, covering her face when I brought up what happened earlier. I had walked in on her and Niall in a slightly.. compromising position. They weren't going all the way, but it wasn’t too far off.
“It’s fine, Grace. I’ll pretend it didn’t happen.” I giggled as she blushed, staring down at the counter that she was cleaning diligently.
“Thank you. But um, if I did want to talk about it and like... ask you something, that would be okay, right?”
‘Sure, of course! Although i’m not sure i’m the best person to ask. It’s not like I have tons of experience.”
Seriously? You don’t seem that way at all!”
“What does that mean, I seem like a slut?” I joked. Her mouth opened, but nothing came out; “That’s- no! Not at all what I meant!”
“I’m kidding Grace. But seriously, what do you mean?”
“I mean like, you're so confident around guys; Zayn in particular. And it’s clear you like him and stuff so I just can’t imagine being able to be-”
“Wait, it’s obvious I like him? I don’t like him!”
“Oh, come on Evie.” She said, looking at me like it was only a matter of time until I admitted it to her.
“How did you-”
“I had an idea that it was true. But Niall has a big mouth, so he sort of just defined it. He agrees with me, we’re definitely team Zevie”
“ You did NOT just say that ! Oh my god, Fucking Niall!” I exclaimed. “What did he say?!”
“He just said that you two would be good together, and I think so too. And yeah, I think Zevie is better than the alternative. Evayn doesn’t have the same ring to it.” I smacked her on the back of the head.
“Shut up! We cannot have a couple name, we aren’t even a couple!” I screeched.
“Why is it even such a big deal though?”
“Because! The whole point of this thing that Zayn and I are doing is that we’re FRIENDS. He needed a friend, that’s what i’m being. I’m not supposed to like him...”
“You can’t plan these kind of things, Ev. They just happen. So, not that you asked for my advice, but i’m gonna give it to you anyways. Just go with it! Don’t force anything; if the two of you are meant to happen, let it happen. If you’re not, then don’t let it ruin your friendship.”
“You're really good with this relationship stuff...” I muttered, hating how right she was. She just smiled proudly, continuing to stack teacups.
So, I guess I was admitting that I liked Zayn now. Not to him of course, no way. Not yet. Maybe not ever. I’m not really sure about all that yet.
All I was sure about was that I did like him. I didn’t want to, and I knew it was stupid and there were so many things that could go wrong. but I couldn’t really attempt to lie to myself anymore.
______________________________________________________________________________

“Wait, what’s your name again? Do you still rent out that room?”
“HA HA VERY FUNNY ASSHOLE!” I smirked at Will. I admit, I hadn’t been hanging around at home much lately, but that was supposed to be a good thing.
“So what exactly have you been up to?” He asked. “Zoey isn’t sure whether or not she should be worried.”
“Why would she be worried?”
“Um, because you’re hanging out with retired band members maybe? 20 year old band members with their own apartments who have parties and smoke. Any of this sound the least bit familiar to you?” I just smirked at him, returning to my laptop.
“I’m fine, Will. You know me, i’m not stupid.” I decided to leave out the part of my new found small little smoking habit.
“Oh, yeah, right. That title’s reserved for me, the problem child.”
“Hey, stop that!” I said, not wanting him to put himself down. “ I just mean, I can’t handle myslef when it comes to these things, you know?”
“I’m not sure I want to know...” He said, putting the milk back in the fridge.
“Oh my god!” I yelled. Hopping up onto the counter, I dug into the big bowl of Cocoa Puffs.
“So, you taking me to Dr. Block today?”
“Um, you want me to?” Usually it was a fight to the death.
“I just assumed you’d want to, considering your boyfrined would be there.”
“First of all; SO not my boyfriend. Second of all, I want to take you for you, not for him.” He just rolled his eyes jokingly, taking his cereal into his room.

So I did end up taking Will to Dr. Block, but I sat in the waiting room for the entire two hours and Zayn never showed up. I didn’t want to see needy or anything, so I didn’t text him to ask. And I knew if I asked Karen she’d give me some sort of sarcastic response, so it wasn’t really worth it. I just used the time to my advantage, I needed some me time. And it all worked out anyways, because when we got home, Zayn was sitting in our living room.
What the hell?
“Hey- What are you doing here?” I asked, shocked to see Zoey sitting across from him, cups of tea in both of their hands.
“Oh, Well I came ‘round to see what you were up to, but you were out...-”
“So I just invited him in! We’ve had a lovely chat.” Zoey butted in, smiling widely. I was cringing from secondhand embarrassment.
“Oh, great...” I said, giving Zoey a look to say “What The Hell Are You Thinking” when Zayn looked away.
“Yeah, well, I wanted to know if you wanted to go hang out? They’re playing The Breakfast CLub at that theatre in Soho.”
“Oh, really?! Yeah let’s go!” I said, clapping excitedly. The Breakfast Club was my favorite movie (don’t you dare call me a cliche), and I sort of loved that Zayn knew that.
“Thank you for the tea, it was really nice to meet you.” Zayn said, giving Zoey his charming smile, causing her to pretty much melt in her seat. Before she could say anything else, I grabbed Zayn by the arm, pulling him out the door.

ZAYN’S POV:

I felt like an idiot, showing up at Evie’s flat, to find that she wasn’t even there. I looked bloody desperate. But thankfully, her Aunt was pretty cool and asked a bunch of question and didn’t make me feel like a creepy asshole. At least it had all worked out, as we were walking through Piccadilly Circus, towards Soho.
“So, you’re Aunt’s pretty cool.” I said casually.
“Yeah, she’s great. She seemed to looove you.” Evie joked. “Such a charmer.” She continued. I smirked, glaring at her out of the corner of my eye. We continued to walk in a comfortable rhythm, talking randomly about anything. That is, until I heard a girlish squeal coming from behind us.
I knew that sound.
It was the one that haunted me in my sleep.
“OH MY GOD!” A girl said, scurrying up to us. “I’M SO SO SORRY, BUT CAN I JUST GET A QUICK PICTURE?! I’M SERIOUSLY GONNA DIE, OH MY GOD!” She spoke loudly and quickly, pulling out her phone.
“Sure love.” I said politely.
“I can take it.” Evie offered.
“Um, who are you?” The girl stopped, giving Evie a glaring look.
“Oh, um. Well, I’m Evie.” She said, smiling awkwardly.
“She’s one of my best friends.” I said quickly, hating that that was how had I had to introduce her.
“You’re the one who works at the Griffin place, right?” She said, her voice cold. “Huh, didn’t know the two of you were so close...”
“Yeah. but - How did you-”
“How about that picture, yeah?!” I said, wanting to divert the conversation. The fans were great, but I knew if Evie said another word, all hell would break loose. Some of the girls could be vicious. So, we took a quick picture, the girl snatched her phone back from Evie, and we were all on our merry way.

But as we continued to walk, I could tell Evie wasn’t the same as she had been 5 minutes ago. And I think I knew why.
“Don’t worry about that shit, Ev.” I said, hoping to reassure her.
“I’m fine, Zayn. It’s just- weird.” She looked at me, attempting to muster a smile.
“You’re obviously not fine, and you don’t have to be. I’m, just saying, they seem vicious. But it’s only a small portion.”
“That girl’s gonna go log onto Twitter or whatever now and tell everyone i’m a bitch or something, you can’t say that that shouldn’t hurt.” She looked away from me.
“Hey-” I said, grabbing her arm, stopping her in her tracks. She spun around so we were face-to-face, a sad look in her eyes.
“It’s gonna be fine. I promise.” My hand moved down her arms, until our fingers laced together. I don’t know what the hell I thought I was doing, this was a bit more then friendly. But I tried to defend it, saying I was just help her. It was what friends do, right?
“This is just, so weird. I’m not used to it, I don’t think I ever could be. Being friends with Zayn Malik is a bit of a responsibility.” She said, laughing lightly.
“I’ll make it worth it.” The words left my mouth before I could comprehend how they sounded. Like I was coming onto her, which I promise I wasn't trying to do!
Evie stopped, her eyes wide, boring into mine. Her lips parted slightly, but she didn’t say anything. I was dying to kiss her, desperate for it. But I didn’t, I held back. But for some reason, In that moment, I sort of thought she might’ve felt the same way.
