Show Me The Way

Chapter 15

ZAYN’S POV:

Last night was one of those nights that I can’t see myself ever forgetting. And no, not only for the reason’s that you would automatically assume. Things went from going amazingly well, to taking a nosedive and turning into a disaster, then eventually turning back around. I’m not sure how it happened, but I wasn’t going to tempt fate by looking for an answer. Instead, I just wanted to enjoy it.

Evie was opening up to me, more and more every day. Looking at her now as she slept in my arms, I saw the outline of what I could see her looking like as a little girl. Messy dark hair, smooth skin, a small smile resting on her beautifully pink heart-shaped lips. I noticed a red-ish blue mark on her neck; a love bite. I imagined her taking a shower, getting out, looking in the mirror, seeing that, and hopefully thinking of me. The thought alone made me smile. I held her close to me, my protective nature over her wondering if she was cold, comfortable, if she wanted to go home, or if she would regret the events of earlier tonight when she woke up? I thought about all of these things as I lie awake. But then, in the back of my head, I knew I was only being paranoid.

I did eventually drift off to sleep. It was the best i’ve slept in a very long time. Something about having Evie’s back pressed against my chest, her warm skin soothing me and her steady pulse in time with mine. All of the things I was thinking, all the thoughts running through my mind, are ones I don’t know if I could ever say out loud. I didn’t have the balls to be fully honest, not to the extent that Evie caused me to want to be.

_ _

I woke up in the middle of the night to an empty bed. I heard Evie having a hushed conversation on the phone.
“Please, just say i’m sleeping at Grace’s. I know, I owe you, okay. I’ll do whatever. Okay, okay. Thanks Will.” She hung up, throwing the phone onto the bedside table. I propped myself up on my elbows, watching as she raked her fingers through her hair.
“You okay babe?” I asked. She spun around
“Oh! I thought you were asleep.”
“I was...”
“I’m sorry, did I wake you up?”
“Nah, it’s okay.” She smiled, getting back onto the bed, sitting up on her knees. She was still just in her bra and underwear, giving me a full view. I smirked. And I think by the look in her eyes, she knew that I was enjoying it.
“I’m cold.” She finally said, her voice sounding much more innocent than the thoughts running through my head about her were. She plopped down, getting under the covers and snuggled into me.
“I can keep you warm.” I responded, wrapping my arm around her waist as her legs tangled with mine.
“Was this me?” She said, trailing a finger down a thin red line that ran down the left side of my stomach, ending just above my hipbone.
“I think it was.” I chuckled.
“I’m sorry.” She whispered, lowering her head to press a few feather kisses to the scratch. I felt my muscles tense at her simple touch.
“It’s more than alright, love.” I said quietly,
She moved her head back up to my shoulder, kissing me again next to my ear, then again on my temple, my cheek. And then finally, my lips. Kissing Evie wasn’t like kissing any other girl. She knew exactly what to do to tease me, disorient me, and leave me wanting more. She had such an effect on me, I hoped I did something similar to her. Feeling the sudden urge to pleasure her, I flipped over so I was hovering above her. I gently moved a few strands of hair off of her cheek, kissing the area. Before she could say a word, a kissed her in a way that I hoped would be able to explain how I was feeling. As I pulled away, her eyes fluttered open. My hand that rested on her hip moved slightly, a look of realization on her face.
“Zayn, you don’t have to.” She spoke quietly.
“I know I don’t have to... But, do you want me to?”
She pursed her lips, smirking at me playfully. “Of course I do. But, maybe, just - not now.” She placed a hand over mine. “But thank you.”
I couldn’t help but laugh. She was so polite. “You’re welcome.” I smiled, leaning down to press my lips to hers once again. Leaning down ever more, my lips grazed her ear, whispering; “But, whenever you’re ready. Just let me know.”
“I most definitely will.” She giggled, the sound like music to my ears.
After a big more of this, I settled back down next to her.
“Are you tired?” I asked.
“Kind of... Are you?”
“A little...”
“I like sleeping with you...” She said lazily. I looked over to see her eyes were closed. Her words made me happy, unbelievably so.
“Me too. Go to sleep, baby...”

EVIE’S POV:

Waking up in a bed that wasn’t my own, in a room it took me a few seconds to recognize, was strange. You know that feeling; when you wake up and have no clue where you are, immediately panicking. But then I saw the clothes strewn across the carpeted floor, the framed pictures of 5 good-looking boys in stylish clothes and perfectly coiffed hair styles. After that, it didn’t take me long to realize. I stretched my arm out, expecting to find Zayn next to me. He wasn’t. Sitting up in bed, I heard someone walking around the apartment.
“Zayn?!” I called, grabbing the first thing I could find to throw on, which ended up being one of his white button-down shirts.
“I’m in the kitchen!” He called back. I padded down the hallway, finding a shirtless Zayn Malik fixing two mugs of tea. It was a sight that was almost too perfect to handle.
“Good morning” I said, my voice still laced with sleepiness. he turned around, a huge smile on his face when he looked at me.
He tugged at the collar of my (well, his) shirt, kissing me on the cheek and handing me a cup.
“Looks better on you.” He grinned, giving me that flirtatious wink that made me feel all giddy inside.
I followed him out into the living room. I noticed that something was different, but it took me a second to realize what.
“Did you do that?” I asked, referring to the Christmas garland decoration that hung on the large window looking out to the city.
“I may have...” I look over my shoulder to see Zayn watching me intently from his spot on the couch.
“That’s so nice...” I practically cooed. Looking at the city laid out in front of me, I tired to remember how I felt just a few months ago, when we first moved here. I had felt like this place could never feel like home. I thought that it was just a phase in my life I was going to have to get through. But that was becoming more and more untrue each day. I was starting to feel at home for the first time, maybe ever. I smiled to myself, looking at the the glittery plastic snowflake and ornaments hanging.
“Where did you get it?” I wondered, going to sit next to Zayn. He pulled my legs onto his lap.
“I found it in the hall closet that I don’t think we’ve opened since we moved in. I’m pretty sure my mom gave it to me or something. I don’t really know. but, the holiday stuff was sorta cut short yesterday, so I thought you might like it.”
“You’re so sweet, thank you.” I sipped my tea, the warmth of the drink helping me keep warm. I was, after all, not exactly covered up. And although the white-oxford-shirt-as-pajamas thing may be sexy or whatever, it wasn’t exactly practical for keeping warm.
“What’s your family like? And your sisters? I don’t really know what to expect... I’ve never met a boyfriend's family before.”
“My mom is gonna love you, I can tell you that for sure. My dad’s not gonna be here, which is kinda a shame, because you’d like him. He’s really smart, reads a lot. But my sisters are...” He stopped, thinking for a second, “You’ll be able to handle them.”
“What does that mean!?” I laughed.
“They can be a shock to the system; brutally honest, say whatever they’re thinking. But you’re tough. Just be yourself, that’s all you need to do to make them like you.”
“When’s the last time you saw them?” Zayn had been sipping his tea, rubbing his other hand up and down my bare legs. But when I said this, he stopped.
“Um, it’s been a while... months, actually.”
“Why?”
“I don’t know... I was being selfish, I guess. More like stupid, really. I used to try and call every week, but I lost track of time and they were more like, I would call whenever I had a chance or thought about it. But then, I was talking to my mom last week, and she was asking what I had been doing. I told her about you. And she got really excited and wanted to meet you and stuff. It was sort of her idea for me to invite you. I mean, She just asked what you were doing, and I said I didn’t know and-” Zayn was speaking quickly, not looking me in the eye, like he was nervous or embarrassed. He cleared his throat, continuing at a slightly slower pace “- And, so, when we were talking about plans for the holidays, I thought this would be sorta perfect.”
“I’m kinda nervous...” I admitted.
“There’s no reason to be, trust me.” And I did. I trusted him.

ZAYN’S POV:

If I had it my way, Evie and I would spend all day in my flat with her either wearing that shirt of mine, or less. I would cook for her, I would sing for her, I would do anything I had her to keep her there with me.
But unfortunately, she had work. And she had to get back home before Zoey started asking Will questions, one’s he either didn’t feel like answering or didn’t know the answer to.
“When will I get you back?” I asked, leaning against the closed front door, now with Evie completely clothed in her things from last night. She leaned against me, giggling at my pouty face.
“Well, I need to go shopping for some things later...”
“I can come.”
“No, you’re not allowed!”
“What? Why not?!”
“Because I said so!”
“Are you getting me a present?” I joked, tickling her ribs.
“No! Maybe. Either way, you arent allowed to come with me. But I could get food from Colby’s and bring it over later...”
“Sound’s perfect.”
“Okay, I really do have to go now.”
“Mmhmm...” I hummed against the soft skin of her neck. I still held onto her, pressing kisses to the areas where last night’s love bites still showed. “You might want to remember to cover these up... Or maybe not.” I chuckled, rubbing my thumb over a specifically prominent one.
“Thanks to you...” She giggled. I knew she needed to leave, but I didn’t want to stop. “Zayn...” She whined.
“I don’t want you to go.” I groaned against her parted lips.
“Me neither, but if I don’t leave now i’ll be even later than I already am. And I can’t exactly show up to the cafe in my clothes from last night.” She smiled. My hand skimmed her waist, moving down to her left leg, tugging at an already-formed hole in her black tights.
“Sorry about that.” I joked, touching the bare skin that was exposed thanks to the tear.
She let out another beautiful laugh, looking up at me. “You’re diverting.”
“I thought I was being pretty sneaky about it.”
“Clearly not sneaky enough.” She joked, eventually pulling herself away from me and forcing me to finally open the front door for her.

EVIE’S POV:

“How was ‘Grace’s’?” Will said sarcastically the second I walked in the door.
“It was fine, Will. I don’t have time for this. I’m already late for work.” I said, breezing past him, into my room. I shed my clothes from the previous night, throwing on a pair of black leggings, my most comfortable white v-neck t shirt, a long black and white patterned cardigan, and a pair of black ankle boots. My hair was a disaster that I wasn’t going to even attempt to deal with right now, so a messy bun would have to do.
“Just thought you’d want to know, Zoey doesn’t know you didn’t sleep here!” Will yelled to me. I was rushing around, grabbing my phone and keys and wallet. But when he said this, I stopped.
“Wait, What? How?”
“She was out, Called and said she wouldn’t be back. I’m thinking she was on a date. She wore a lot more makeup to work yesterday, plus a skirt. It was fucking weird.”
“Really? A skirt? How scandalous.” My dry humor was left unnoticed by Will. “Just because she was wearing a skirt and some lip gloss doesn’t automatically mean she was on a date.”
“Then why the hell did she stay out all night? She came in this morning to change and left 10 minutes later. Sorta like you’re doing right now.” He looked at me with a blank look, cocking an eyebrow. I couldn’t understand why he was telling me all of this if he was still so mad at me.
“So?”
“So what?”
“So who cares if she was on a date? And who cares if I was too?”
“I guess it doesn’t...” He said, turning away from me, clearly finished with the conversation.
I didn’t have time to get him to tell me more. I had to leave. Now.
“I’ll see you later.” I said once I was halfway out the door.
He didn’t say anything back.

- -

“You do realize you’re forty-five minutes late, right?” Grace said when I finally got to the cafe. She didn’t seem angry, just flustered.
“Yes. I know. I’m sorry. Where’s Nate?” I was out of breath from power walking down the street, swerving through crowds and dog walkers and trashcans. It was very exhausting, considering I do physically approximately never.
“Not yet. He’s coming at 10. Lucky you.” She smiled, letting me know she was just messing with me.
“Where do you need me?”
“Brewer.” I nodded, grabbing my apron, wrapping it around my waist, and starting to brew more coffee.

- -

Nate did show up at 10. And Grace, in typical Grace-ish fashion, didn’t tell him I was late. She is actually too perfect. Best coworker / friend ever.
“So, I’m gonna pretend that I don’t see the dazed look on your face and go ahead and ask you how you and Zayn are doing.” Nate asked after an hour or two of work. There didn’t seem to be anything pressing to do, so Nate made two latte’s and handed me one as we sat on two of the tall stools.
I could feel myself blushing, staring down at my chipping nail polish. “It’s... great. So great. I’m going home with him to Bradford on Wednesday for Christmas...”
“Woah, that was fast! Meeting the family already?”
“I guess... But it’s not really like that. I just, didn’t really have anything planned, and he offered. But, since we’re on the topic, I need some advice. If you were Zayn, what would you want for Christmas?”
“You’re asking me, manager of a tiny hole-in-the-wall coffee shop, what you think you should give your superstar rich boyfriend for Christmas?” He chuckled.
“I guess I am...”
“Well. I guess, if I were the guy who could buy anything he wants, I would want something that isn’t about cost. Like, something that you put thought into, you know? What that is, I haven’t got a clue. That’s for you to figure out.”
“Well thanks for the help.” I grumbled, still coming up blank when I tried to think about what to get him.
“You finish that, i’m gonna go make some calls for inventory, okay?” I nodded, sipping my half-finished coffee. Grace came out of the back room, sliding her phone into the pocket of her jeans.
“Niall?” I inquired.
“Maybe...” Her cheeks flushed.
“And where exactly did you two end up last night?”
“I don’t kiss and tell. But If I were someone who did, i’d tell you that we ended up at my place. That is, if I did kiss and tell. But, you know, I don’tt.”
“Very cryptic, I like it. Glad to hear the rest of the night went well for the both of us.”
“Me too. I guess we could call that a pretty successful double date, although it didn’t last too long with the whole ‘date’ part.” We both giggled.
“By the way! Can you come shopping with my at like, one-ish? I still need to get gifts, and find some shoes that go with the dress I wanna wear in case I need a fancy outfit.”
“Yes, perfect! Niall and I agreed to exchange small gifts. Nothing major or too expensive. And I have no clue what to get him.”
“It’s so difficult, right?! Like, what the hell do you get these boys?!”
“EXACTLY!”

- -

Grace and I only had to work until 12:45. Once we were done, I was desperate for a shower. So Grace just came back home with me and decided to wait.
“Zoe?! Will?!” I yelled through the apartment.
“Do you really need to yell?!” Will snapped, opening his bedroom door. His hair was a mess and he was wearing and old ratty t shirt and pajama pants.
“Were you asleep?”
“Yeah, but then you decided to wake me the fuck up with all you-” Will stopped mid-sentence. His eyes drifted away from me, looking at something behind me. I turned around to realize he was now staring at Grace.
“Hi, I’m Grace.” She said politely.
“Um, yeah, I’m- uh, i’m -”
“Thi is my brother Will.” I huffed, ushering her away from my nearly drooling brother.
“Sorry, he’s obnoxious.”
“No problem.” Grace responded sweetly.
Walking into my room, I didn’t even bother explaining the reasoning for the boxes. “You can go on my laptop, or watch TV or whatever. I’ll be super fast, promise.” And super fast I was. I took a 5 minute shower, applied light makeup, and let my hair air dry. I didn't feel like having more laundry than I also had piled in the corner of my room, so I just changed back into the stuff I wore earlier. Looking in the mirror, I assessed the marks dotted across my neck and the top of my chest. I should be embarrassed by them, trying to cover them up or something. But I wasn’t. I ran my fingers across them, reminding myself of the way Zayn sucked and nibbled lightly at my sensitive skin... And then, the sound of Grace in my room brought me back to reality, reminding me that now wasn’t exactly the time for personal reflection.
“Alright, ready to go”
“Let’s do it.”

_ _

So, shopping for people I have never met and knew pretty much nothing about was close to impossible. I had called Zayn four times already to ask him questions, sending him pictures to get his opinion on if his mom and sisters would like it or not... It was extremely exhausting.
Finally, after almost 4 hours of shopping, I think I had done pretty well. I got his three sisters gift cards to Topshop and a Benefit makeup box set from Sephora. His mom ended up being fairly simple after I made him give me some details. I got her A really nice cashmere scarf from Harrods and a small bottle of Chanel perfume. And honestly, if they didn’t like it, they could return it. The last thing I would be was offended. The only thing I had left, and arguably most difficult and stressful, was a gift for Zayn.
Grace and I had split up in the big department stores, so i never even saw what she ended up getting Niall. She said something about a jersey for his favorite team or something, I wasn’t really sure.

By 5:30 , my feet were killing me from walking and I was tired of salespeople shoving things in my face. So, I got dinner to go from Colby’s and brought it over to Zayn’s. I offered to get stuff for Grace and Niall, but apparently she had something to do with some of her University friends tonight so she wouldn’t be over.
“Hellooo?” I called, opening Zayn’s front door, which was strangely unlocked.
“Zayn?!” I stepped inside, leaving the paper bag of food on the coffee table, wandering through the kitchen, small dining room, and down the hall. Zayn’s bedroom door was slightly open. I pushed it further ajar, revealing Zayn’s tall frame sprawled out on his bed, fast asleep. I immediately smiled. He looked so cute.
I took the few steps to the left side of his bed, climbing onto the mattress and crawling over to where he was lying.
“Baby...” I whispered, kissing his stubbly cheek. He didn’t even flinch.
“Zayn, wake up...” He stirred a little. his lashes nearly touched his cheeks with his eyes closed, his lips pouting perfectly. I was getting slightly more brave, just wanting him to get up so we could eat.
“Come on, I’m starving. I brought you extra fries.” I pressed my lips to his. Just like I planned, he finally opened his eyes.
“Hey there.” he said, his voice all sexy and raspy. He blinked a few times, rubbing his eyes, making him look much younger than twenty years old. “How’d the shopping go? All your messages sorta made it feel like I was there.”
“Ha ha, so funny. But I would call it a success. You would’ve loved it; ton’s of shopping, little kids crying, crowded department stores. All of your favorite things.” I joked with him, lying down next to him on my back. “Are you hungry?” I asked.
“Starving. But I wanna do something else first.”
“What? It’s gonna get cold-” I began. But before I could finish my sentence, Zayn covered my body with his, his lips descending, making my completely forget about dinner, or shopping, or really anything but him...
