Show Me The Way

Chapter 12

EVIE’S POV:

“So, Niall, tell me, how are things going with Grace?” I leaned my elbows on the table, watching as Niall shoveled waffles into his mouth. He stopped for a split second, looking up at me, and then resumed. A minute later, when he plate was empty, he finally answered.
“Um. Good.”
“Wow, how interesting...” He knew I wasn’t buying it.
Niall was a bit of an emotional eater.
“Fine, not so great. I like her alot, but I’m just so... awkward. Like, all the time.”
“You? Awkward? I just never would think to put those two words together.” I giggled. He gave me a glare, so I decided it was time to cut the comedy crap. “Okay, sorry, i’m done now. But seriously, what’s wrong? A few weeks ago I literally had to pull you apart in the back room. What could you possibly have done that quick to screw it up? Or was it her?”
“It was... I mean, I think it was me. I think. I don’t really know... Like, she’s really nice and fun and pretty and everything. I’m just not good at this stuff. I never really have been. This is the first time i’ve thought a relationship could last longer than the milk in our fridge. I guess i’m just scared i’m gonna say something stupid, or screw it up...” He looked dejected, like he had given up hope.
“No way am I believing that! You’re Niall Irish Legend Horan! You could get any girl you wanted in a second.”
“But she’s just, really... different.”
“Bad different or good different?”
“Good. Definitely good.”
“Then who cares if you’re awkward?! She likes you, I know that for a fact. If there is anything I can help you with its... I don’t know, Be yourself? Follow your dreams? Look for the silver lining? Nialler, I’m really not great with these pep talk things. I just knew I had to do something before you choked to death on your waffles.” He laughed with me, finally seeming to exhale and turn back into the carefree boy I knew.
“Hey, maybe we could all go on a double date?!” He said suddenly.
I looked at him warily. “Are you just saying this now because Zayn isn’t here yet and you know he’d turn you down in a second but I don’t have the heart to say no to you?”
“Yep.”
“You’re smarter than you look.”
“I get that alot.”
I just laughed, letting him feel good instead of making a joke and shutting him down. Because really, hurting Niall’s feelings made me feel like i’d kicked a puppy or something.
“Hey! I’m here, sorry!” Zayn suddenly appeared, rushing into the restaurant. He was out of breath, giving my a kiss on the cheek and sitting down next.
“The hell have you been, I already finished my waffles?!” Niall asked.
“Sorry, mate. I fell asleep.” Zayn laughed. The waiter came over and took his order, along with bringing Niall and me our second cups of tea.
I felt Zayn’s hand next to mine under the table and I took it gently, winding our fingers together. He squeezed. I saw him smile out of the corner of my eye. I squeezed back.
“So, Zayn! How does a double date sound this Friday?!” Niall burst, practically hopping up and down in his seat. Zayn’s smile fell.
“What?”
“Well, I already talked to your girl over here and she thought it was a GREAT idea.”
“Niall, I didn’t say-”
“Oh, hush Evie, you know you want to.” Niall said, waving his hand in my direction as he stared at Zayn, waiting for an answer.
“Um...I-” He looked from Niall to me, and then back and forth again. “I mean...”
“Dude, chill. It’s a double date. That’s all.” Niall’s caused Zayn to exhale.
“Okay, fine, whatever.” I huge smile broke out onto Niall’s face.
“I knew you wouldn’t let me down!”

After breakfast, Zayn and I were walking back to my building so I could change for work. He kept a protective arm around my shoulder, giving me a bit more warmth than my thin jacket provided.
“You were a good friend today, you know that?” I smile up at him, admiring his perfect jawline and perfect way-too-long-for-any-boy eyelashes.
“Yeah... I know. I’m just not a big fan of, like, double dates and all that.”
“Well, i’ve never even been on a double date.” I laughed, trying to make him give me a real smile. “So even if it’s a terrible one, I won’t know the difference.” He smirked, looking down at me. I gave him a huge grin, trying anything to make him laugh.
“So I guess that means we're really gonna do this...”
“It’s for Niall. Just remember that.”
“For Niall.” He nodded.
I stopped walking, tugging Zayn’s arm over to a small alley, pressing his back against the cold brick wall of the side of a building. Lowering my voice, I said; “Plus, if you’re lucky, maybe i’ll make it worth your while. After.” This time, a wicked smile formed on his face, his dark eyes sparkling mischievously.
“Oh, really? And all I have to do is be on my best behavior?”
“Mmhmm...” I hummed, sliding my hand up his coat-clad arm and around his neck, tugging his head down towards me. “And I promise to wear something that I know you’ll like.” I heard him audibly groan, or moan, or something, which made me giggle. His hands slipped into my jacket, holding my waist firmly.
“You’re making this double date does sound better by the second...”
“That was the plan!” I said, taking a step away from him, extremely proud of myself and my apparently excellent persuasion skills. “Now, let’s go. I’m gonna be late.”

ZAYN’S POV:

I wasn’t a fan of double dates. Hell, until recently, I wasn’t a big fan of dates. I never enjoy it, and was never good at it. Maybe it was because pretty much every date I had been on had been with some girl that I didn't give two shits about and was just hoping to get lucky with afterwards. I was different now, so maybe this would be different. I hoped it would. But between Niall’s pleading and Evie’s promises, I knew I wasn’t getting out of this one.
As we took the elevator up to Evie’s flat, I silently hoped that no one was home. It wouldn’t be too difficult to convince her to be a little late for work.
But when we got to her door, and heard the sounds of voices on the other side, I knew I had no such luck.
“I guess Will’s home?” She said, opening the door, which was strangely not locked.
“Will?” She called, but stopped when she noticed the group of people sitting around the coffee table.
“Oh, Ev, you’re here. And you brought your boyfriend...perfect...” Her brother said, standing up and swaying a bit before walking over to us. His eyes were bloodshot and his words were slurred.
“What the fuck, are you drunk?” Evie asked, grabbing at his arm.
“Chill, sis. We’re just hanging out.” Will said, shrugging off her obvious concern.
Looking around, I knew they weren’t just ‘hanging out’. I knew this. I did this.
“He’s stoned.” I said quietly to Evie.
“Why don’t you shut the hell up asshole?!” He yelled in my direction, accidently running into the back of the couch. The people sitting around all turned to look at us, blank looks on all of their faced.
“Will, stop it.” Evie said quietly, not looking at either of us. “Where’s Zoey?”
“Where do you think? Work. You know, for someone who finished school early, you can be pretty damn stupid.”
“Hey-” I stepped forward, the sudden urge to punch Evie’s brother in the jaw clouding my desire to keep calm and help her fix this.
“Zayn- It’s okay.” She practically whispered, placing her hand on my chest. Turning away from her brother to face me, the sadness in her eyes scared me.
“You should go. I can handle this.”
“I’m not going anywhere-” I began, looking around at the beer bottles littering the ground, ashtrays overflowing.
“Please. I know what to do. Trust me.” She gave me a pleading look.
“Evie, I can’t just leave you here. Let me at least get everyone out, and then i’ll go.” She didn’t say anything, just nodded.
I clapped my hands, stepping further into the living room which reeked of pot.
“ALRIGHT, EVERYONE NEEDS TO GET OUT. NOW” A couple people got up, trying to get their footing. “Does it look like i’m kidding?” I said angrily, standing my ground and hoping that that would be the end of it. Thankfully, it seemed to work. The obviously intoxicated teenagers stumbled out the door one by one.
“I’ll be over later to make sure you’re okay. I can come to the cafe.” I said quietly to Evie. She nodded, kissing my on the cheek. Her brother had flopped down on the couch, not seeming to care that he had pissed of his sister, the person who would do anything for him.
“Don’t ignore me, Will.” I heard her say as I shut the door behind me. I know I should leave, I shouldn't be listening in on their conversation. But I couldn’t help it.
“Fuck off.” He said angrily.
“You’re gonna have to try and do better than that. What the hell were you thinking? You’ve been doing so well recently, what happened?”
He didn’t say anything.
“Take your time, I can wait.”
“Jesus christ, Evie! You have no fucing right to be acting like this. I know you’ve been smoking up with that guy, I’m not an idiot. How many times have you come home smelling like weed? You think i’m that stupid?!” I felt instantly guilty; This was my fault.
“This isn’t about me! This is about yu trashing our living room and acting like it’s no big deal! You’re so much smarter than this, I know you! You pulled this shit back home all the time, but I thought you’d finally grown up. I guess I was wrong.”
“You’re doing it again...” I heard Will mutter.
“What?”
“Trying to be mom. Newsflash; you’re not. Sorry.” Evie said nothing in response. I knew that comment must’ve hurt her.
“If you want to screw your life up like this, go ahead. But don’t do it here. I don’t want to have to deal with it.” Her voice was sharp, the slamming of a door following. I should go, I shouldn't have listened. It was wrong, I knew that. But I also shouldn't have left her to handle this alone.
Evie handled a lot of things alone.

I went down to the cafe a bit later to talk to her, but Nate told me she never showed up to her shift. I gave him a brief explanation, he seemed to understand that it wasn’t her fault.
I found myself back at Evie’s front door, knocking tentatively, hoping it wasn’t her brother to open the door. Thankfully, it wasn’t.
Not-so-thankfully, Evie looked disheveled and exhausted. Her hair was pulled into a messy ponytail, dark circles under her eyes.
“I’m back.” I said quietly. She attempted a smile, but it wasn’t real.
“I’m sorry about earlier. I sort of...pushed you out. I was just overwhelmed.” I stepped through the door, enveloping her into a hug, kissing the top of her head. We stayed like this for a minute or two. Evie held me tight and I ran my fingers through her hair, tugging the elastic out and letting it fall down her back.
“Don’t apologize.” She didn’t say another word. But as I looked around, I noticed a large trash bag in the middle of the room. Things had been straightened up a little.
“What were you doing?”
“Trying to clean up... The last thing I need is Zoey worried about Will. She already has too much on her plate.”
“I can help.” I said, extracting myself from her and beginning to pick up garbage.
“You don’t have to...” Her voice trailed off. “But, Thank you.” She said, seeming to accept the fact that I wasn’t taking no for an answer.
Evie and I worked in silence. But once we were finished, someone had to speak first.
“I went to the cafe and told Nate you were dealing with somethings... he said not to worry about missing your shift.”
“Shit... If you can believe it, I actually forgot.” She put her hand over her eyes, shaking her head.
“Don’t worry about it, i’m serious.” She sat down at the small kitchen table, I followed, sitting across from her. “Where’s Will?”
“Who the hell knows. He left a while ago.” She didn’t look at me, but instead inspected the imperfection in the wood table, tracing her fingers along the jagged lines.
“How much would you hate me if I told you I heard your conversation earlier?”
She didn’t look up, just continued with the trail of the cracks in the table, focusing all of her attention on that. “I sort of assumed.” I heard her say.
“If you want to talk...”
“I don’t. I don’t really want to talk. I’m Sorry.” She finally looked up, her eyes piercing me.
“Stop saying sorry to me. You don’t need to.” I stood up, walking over to her seat, kneeling down next to her and taking her hands in mine. “What would make you happy right now?” I asked, hoping for an honest answer. She looked down at our entwined fingers, running her thumb over the palm of my hand.
“I’m really tired. Will you lay down with me?” Her voice was small, like she thought I could ever say no to her.
“Of course, baby.” She stood up and led me down a small hall and to her closed bedroom door.
“I’ve never seen your room.”
“Yeah... Don’t get your hopes up, it’s not much.” She smiled up at me, turning the doorknob. Her room was a decent size, with 2 windows, a bathroom of her own, a closet, a flat screen TV... but there were boxes lining all of the walls. It’s been at least 4 months since she’s moved in, yet she still hasn’t fully unpacked. I think that that said more about Evie than words ever could.
“I know, it’s stupid that I haven’t unpacked...” I stopped her.
“Shh... just lay down.” She agreed, sitting on the edge of the bed. She kicked off her shoes, letting her head fall onto the pillow.
“Aren’t you gonna join me?” She asked. I had just been watching her, standing at the end of the bed, my eyes never leaving her body. The bottom of her sweater had moved up a little, exposing a bit of her stomach. Her tight jeans hugged the curve of her hips, while her eyes stared at me, watching me just as intently.
“Yes.” I stepped out of my shoes, shrugging my jacket off, and got into bed next to her.
“Come here.” I whispered, touching her arm, pulling her towards me. She responded, her body fitting perfectly next to mine. I ran my fingers through her hair, knowing it calmed her. Her hand rested on my chest, tracing invisible patterns.
“He always think’s i’m trying to get him in trouble. When in reality, I just want to help.” She spoke quietly. Her left leg wrapped around my right, pulling my body closer to her.
“I know you do...”
“I guess I was sort of a hypocrite though.”
“I did want to talk about that. Ev, if you don’t want to smoke with me, don’t feel like you have to.” She tilted her head so she could look at me.
“I’m fine, Zayn. Really. You don’t need to worry about me.”
“I’m always gonna worry about you.” She smiled, hugging me tighter.
