My Heart Skips A Beat

Chapter 13

HARRY’S POV:
I could hardly sleep last night, or the past few nights to be quite honest. I felt guilt. I felt guilt because I had pushed Anna to let our relationship to be known by everyone. I felt guilty because, thanks to me, her life had completely changed for the worse. But other than guilt, I also felt nerves. Because there was something I needed to do today that was continuously running through my head nonstop.
“You ready for this, mate?” Louis asked when I had woken him up early this morning with my constant pacing, packing, and the fact that I needed to talk to someone.
“Yes. I am. Absolutely.” I took a deep breath, trying to quiet down the constant chatter in my head.
“How about we try that again, this time with just a bit more conviction, eh?”
“Lou-“
“YOU’RE the one who’s freaking out! I’m just trying to help you!”
“Yeah, okay. I should just go.”
“Good luck, my dear curly-haired friend”
“Thanks.”
I threw my Jack Wills duffel bag into the trunk of my tiny car at 6:49 on Saturday morning, excited and nervous for the day to come. I had asked Anna to come to my stepdad’s Bungalow not just because I wanted to spend the weekend with her, but also because it was the only thing I could think of that would give her some peace, some time away from the crazy photographers, the fans, just everything. I also hoped that she hadn’t thought that by taking her away for the weekend, I expected, whatever, in return. I mean, I would be lying if I said I hadn’t thought about, that, with Anna, of course I had! But I didn’t want her to think that because I was doing this for her, I was just expecting sex or something.
I forced myself to calm down, let all of those things leave my mind, and just relax. It didn’t take long to get to St. Kingston’s School. I waited for a few minutes until Anna came rushing out of the gates, lugging a huge bag over her shoulder. I got out of the car and took it from her, putting it in the trunk.
“Good morning sunshine.” I said sarcastically. Anna was definitely NOT a morning person. She mumbled a response and reached up to kiss me quickly, before getting into the car.
“So, you excited for a weekend away from the madness?” We were driving down the fairly empty London streets, the radio playing quietly.
“Of course I am! And not just because it gives me a chance to get away from all of this”, she waved her arms around to emphasize ‘this’.
“Oh, really? Why else are you excited?” I said cheekily, looking at her out of the corner of my eye.
“Ehhh, I don’t know… Maybe just, you know, getting to see the countryside…something like that.” She giggled and I gave her a playful swat of the hand.
“I think you can figure out what else…” She said, slightly seductively. My heart beat a bit faster, but I told my brain not to get carried away.
“We should stop at a petrol station before we get out of the city. Wouldn’t be too fun running out on the side of some deserted street in the middle of nowhere.”
“Yeah, might want to try and avoid that. I’m gonna go into the store and get some snacks and stuff. You want anything?” She asked.
“Oh, yeah! Whatever you can find is good. I’m starving.”
“Me. Too. But I mean, what else is new?” I chuckled as I watched her walk into the little convenience store. But the moment Anna was gone, the nerves returned. I knew I had to just say it, and soon. I couldn’t hold it in anymore.
She came walking out a few minutes later with a paper bag full of snacks, carrying to Styrofoam cups of coffee. I gave her an amused look.
“What?! You said you were hungry!”
“I was, I just wasn’t aware we were planning on staying all week.” She gave me a playful smirk. I finished up with the gas and got into the car where Anna was scrolling through my ipod and sipping her coffee.
“Okay, so I pretty much got one of everything so take whatever. Seriously, just eat it all.” She laughed, pulling out a pack of biscuits and ripping open the packaging.
“Anna?”
“Hmm?” She said, not really paying attention.
“I love you.”

ANNA’S POV:
I stopped, not sure if I had heard him correctly.
“What?” I turned towards Harry.
“I-uh, I love you.” He looked down at his hands, fidgeting with the sleeve of his sweatshirt. “ You don’t need to say anything back. I just, wanted to say it.”
“I- it’s just…”
“Anna, really, if you don’t want to, don’t say anything. You don’t have to just because I did. I won’t be mad, I promise.”
“It’s not that. It’s just- No one has told me they loved me in a really long time. Like, not even my parents…” I stared down at his perfect hands, twisting a loose thread around his long, slender fingers.
“What? I mean- Really?”
“Yeah. I can’t really think of the last time. That sounds terrible, but.- I just, I don’t know… It’s true. My parent’s were always the typical New York Upper East Side parents; cold, never home… It’s just not something that they said. I mean, I think they do, but- Ugh, I’m sorry. I’m completely ruining this whole moment!”
“No, you absolutely are not.” His hand cupped each side of my face, his green eyes boring into mine.
“Why?” I said in a weak voice.
“Why what?”
“Why do you love me? I’m sorry, I just need to know…”
“I love you because you even have to ask that. I love you because you came here to London all on your own, scared of nothing. I love you because you see me as more than just the face on the TV. Because you look more beautiful right now, at 7:30 in the morning, than anyone I’ve ever seen. And because you make me happier, and more nervous, than anything-“ Without thinking, I cut him off with a kiss. I placed my hands over his, linking our fingers together. He exhaled, pulling me a bit closer, and I felt his long lashes tickle my cheek.
Suddenly I pulled away, just an inch; “I love you”, my voice barely a whisper.
“Anna, you don’t have to-“
“No, I love you. I really love you. So much.” His eyes lit up and the corner of his mouth twitched upwards. But I didn’t give him a moment to say something else, I pulled him back in for another heart-wrenching kiss.

HARRY’S POV:
I wanted to forget what Anna had told me about her parents. I wanted to be able to just be happy and content with how perfect everything was. I just couldn’t. I could not let go of the fact that she couldn’t remember the last time someone told her they loved her. I look at this girl, this perfect girl, and I just don’t understand it. But it was obvious that she didn’t want to talk about it, so I tried to let it go and enjoy the rest of the drive together.
“This bungalow is actually the first place the boys and I went when we became a group when we needed to like, bond and stuff.”
“Oh god, I don’t even want to know what’s gone on there!”
“Hey, it was all in good fun!”
“Yeah, that’s what I’m worried about.” I let out a laugh as we finally pulled into the driveway of the bungalow.
“So, here it is.” I said as I swung the door open. The small living room, kitchen, and dining room table were all visible the moment you walked in the door. There was a lot of dark wood, patterned blankets thrown over chairs and sofas, and the slightly outdated kitchen items.
“It isn’t too much, but it’s okay for a quick getaway.”
“It’s great. Really…homey.” Anna said, looking around with a content smile on her face. She looked right sexy today; black leggings, a grey t-shirt that showed a sliver of midriff when she moved her arms, her wavy blonde hair falling around her face perfectly. Something about the way she looked today managed to make me want her even more, if that was even possible. This weekend wasn’t all about sex, but I was still a guy with a broad imagination.
“I’m glad you like it.” She looked at me with thankful looking eyes,
“I’m glad we’re doing this.”
“Me too. I do hope you brought a swimsuit though.”
“A swimsuit? Harry, I’m not sure if you’re aware but it’s OCTOBER.”
“It’ll be fun! Come on, I dare you!” I said, gesturing towards the pool outside. She gave me a sly look, a glint of mischief in her eyes.
“What do I get if I do?”
“Hmm… good question. How about, I’ll cook you dinner?”
“Sounds good to me.” She said with a shrug, beginning to walk towards the sliding doors.
“Hey hey hey! What about me?!”
“What about you?”
“What do I get if I win?”
“I guess I could try and cook you dinner, not saying it’s going to be edible, but that’s your fault then.” A sly smile played on her lips as she opened the glass door. We stepped out into the brisk October air, starting to feel a bit nervous about this little dare myself. But Anna was clearly not backing down. She pulled off her grey t-shirt, revealing a lace bra. So clearly, she was trying to torture me then. She caught me staring, but just smiled and winked. I pulled off my sweatshirt, and then the white v-neck I had on underneath. I felt my arms cover in goosebumps. But before I had a minute to think, Anna cannonballed into the pool, splashing freezing cold water all over me.
“Oh, you little shit!” I said, diving in after her.
“You asked for it! This was your idea after all” I popped up out of the water right in front of her, my hair falling flat across my face before I shook it out like a wet dog. Anna giggled, the sound echoing around the stone walls the surrounded the little pool.
“So, what are we having for dinner?”
