New Life, New Love
Birds and Bracelets
We sat in the little wooden canoe as Harry circled us around the lake. I looked up into his green eyes and flash of gold appeared and disappeared by his lips.
Firefly.
Tonight the air was a bit chillier than the other spring nights. I was just glad it wasn't raining. Harry stopped rowing and sat the paddle across the boat behind him. He shuffled forward a bit, our knees grazed.
The touch sent tingles up my thighs, I couldn't contain the eruption of butterflies in my stomach. Everything was so perfect. The scenery, the lake, him. He was perfect. He work a dark long sleeve shirt that showed off his lean torso perfectly. His tight jeans accentuated the length of his legs. His hair was pulled back by a dark blue beanie. His green eyes seemed to be made of green diamond whenever I stared into them.
"I have something for you." His husky voice warmed my heart.
To my surprise, he brought out a box, the size of his palm and handed it to me. He held a smirk on his face.
"What's this?" I asked, obviously shocked. I was familiar with the box size. It had to be a piece of jewelry.
"It's...just open it."
I opened up the box slowly, savoring this moment. Could he feel the same way about me?
My eyes landed on a dainty, dark blue bracelet. I narrowed my eyes into the little silver piece on it. Realizing it was a bird, my head flew back as I let out a loud laugh. I knew what the bird was for. It was a simple reminder of the time we were walking down the street and a group of birds flew over us, leaving a few presents on our shirts. It was disgusting, but we never ceased to laugh about it.
"Harry! It's so perfect!" He chuckled and nodded his head.
"So, you like it?" His smile grew wider.
"It's beautiful, I love it." I flashed a smile as I attempted to get it out of the box.
"Here let me help, love." Love. There goes my heart a-fluttering. He managed to get the bracelet out and wrapped it around my wrist. I smiled up at him.
"When you wear this you have to promise to remember me, got it?" I nodded as I bit down on my lip, trying to hide my nervousness.
"And I want you to know how much you mean to me Bella. This, this year has been one of the best years of my life and it's because of you. I don't know what I would do without you. You're my rock."
A stupid, measily tear managed to slide out of my eye when he said those words. I tried to hide it, but he noticed.
"Are you going soft on me, Harry?" I managed to croak, trying to lighten the mood.
"Nah, I'm as hard and mean as I'll ever be." He smirked as he flexed his biceps, playing along with me.
"I don't think so...I think you just shown me you have the biggest heart a boy could have." My finger poked his chest as he let out a humored groan. His lips pursed outward and I wanted so badly to kiss him, but I couldn't. I didn't know for sure if he returned my feelings and I never wanted this friendship to end, even if that meant sacrificing a bit of romance with Harry.
"Boy?" Harry's eyebrow raised. His eyes flashed with mischief.
"Harry, what are you plannin-AAAHHH!!!
*SPLASH*
I felt my body go cold when I hit the icy water. I came up and saw Harry in the water with the biggest, dorkiest smirk on his face. The canoe was flipped over and slowly bounced in water off to our sides.
"I can't believe you just did that!" I let out a laugh, but I tried to sound irritated.
"You called me a boy." He shrugged in the water.
"Didn't mean you had to ruin my makeup." I stated with a slight smile.
"You don't wear makeup." Harry pointed out the obvious.
I just let out a laugh. "Yeah, in case idiots decide to flip me out of a canoe into a freaking cold lake!" Harry let out a loud laugh. As it died down, he ducked under the water. My pulse quickened as I felt his arms wrap around my waist. His head popped up, his height causing me to look up at him. He began to lean in, my body going rigid.
I thought he was going to kiss me, but instead he pulled me down into the water. I tried to squirm to reach the surface, but Harry's hold was too tight.
"Aah!" We came up in the water, my teeth were chattering. He pulled away from me, taking away the only little source of warmth.
We ended up splashing each other for a few minutes until I decided I was too cold and we got out.
This was one of my sweetest memories I had of Harry. Goosebumps would form at the thought of his hands on my waist, or the fact that he got me such a thoughtful gift. I remember the way his warm hands found mine as we got into the car. I remember how he fanned his breath over my trembling fingers in an effort to warm the tips. I remember how we sang at the top of our lungs to songs playing on the radio as we drove around town in the middle of then night. We didn't go home immediately because the lake wasn't that far away.
I even remember the flavors of ice cream we got to finish off the night. I had chocolate chip cookie dough and he had mint chocolate chip. We both snuck licks off each other's cones.
That bracelet never left my wrist, except when I went to shower.
Things got strange after that.
I heard more weird conversations between Harry and his friends. I never asked about it though because I didn't want to cause any arguments.
I was sitting in the living room and my phone went off. I almost didn't answer but I saw Harry's name flash across the screen. I raced to pick it up before he could hang up.
"Harry?"
"Bella?" He sounded weird.
"Yeah, are you alright?"
"You're not Jon. Ugh Bella."
"Harry, are you drunk?"
"Shi-" The line went dead. Then I heard my brother's phone go off. He answered.
"Harry? Yeah, bro. I'll be right down." He sounded concerned.
Jon ran down the stairs with a weird expression on his face. He swung open the door and Harry stumbled in. I got up immediately and walked over to him.
"Harry, why are you drunk?" He shook his head, refusing to make eye contact with. He whispered something into Jon's ears and they both left the house.
It was weird for Harry to be drunk right now as it was a Sunday and it was only 4 pm. I decided to brush it off and finish the rest of my homework.
Jon came home 1 freaking am, looking a little flustered. I walked up to him after he stalked through the front door.
"Is Harry okay?" I whispered not wanting to wake everyone in the house up. Jon looked deep in thought and didn't answer me.
"Jon?" I grabbed his arm to get his attention.
"Huh? Oh yeah, he'll be alright." Jon shrugged my grip off and walked up the stairs.
"Jon?" He stopped and turned around to face me. His brown eyes looked up at me and flashed with guilt before he looked down.
Guilt?
"Should I be worried?"
"Bella, I don't wanna talk right now, okay?" He jogged up to his room and slammed his door.
Hard.
Something was wrong. Harry doesn't get drunk like that on a Sunday. Not at 4 pm of all times!
Jon doesn't come home after being with a drunk Harry until 1 am on a sunday either. And he certainly doesn't look at me with guilt in his eyes. And he definitely doesn't shrug off my questions like that. Not about my best friend.
Anxiety pulsed through me as I thought of the possibilities. Could Harry be going through another STD scare? What if he had gotten a girl pregnant? I couldn't think of anything else worse than that.
But it was much worse, much more horrible than I could ever have imagined.
